Making tongs can require much energy spent drawing out and shaping if you don’t own a power hammer. Here is a technique using a slit and drift to form the boss and end. This method allows the boss to retain the mass needed to ensure a strong set of tongs.

Merry late Christmas, everyone! This is a bench block I made for my brother as a Christmas present. It’s made from scrap mystery steel - just under 4” in diameter. I was going to engrave the bottom but this steel was having none of that… so I stamped it. My dad helped me out milling the V grooves on the top surface, using a rotary table and nice big vertical mill. It was a little beyond the capabilities of my tooling.
