Minstrel

Hopping from city-state to city-state, the life of a minstrel is a harsh one. Their life depends entirely on their instrument and voice: the choice of tune, the timbre of the strings, the skill and character of their playing and singing - these factors mean the difference between a hearty dinner and warm bed, or a frigid, hungry night in the streets.

Yanalin is an exception, though. She's made herself a name, known far and wide as the "Twirling Lyrist" - for she performs a dance whilst strumming her trusty lyre. The act is quite original, refreshing, profound - for it attracts a large gathering of onlookers awestruck by her skill - so much so that she does not need to worry about food and lodging; they'll take care of her.

An inn-keeper would do well to ask her to come play for his guests; however, he must ensure that, in exchange, he provides her a hot bowl of sheep's stew, and a soft straw bed for the night.

The Tablet-house

The tablet-house is, by all accounts, a sober place. One comes to read the weather tables, study mathematics and astronomy, or store important details regarding one's personal information. But, now and then, a few may come and make a bit of fun. Usually, it's not harmful, or disrupting, or displeasing - so long as one does not commit crimes of indecency or make themselves a public nuisance.

Andiya and his friend Mure-Enna have not come for play, however. They're in need of a multiplication table for study, and managed to get their hands on one.

Storehouse Maiden

Whether by farms, shops, houses, or even the gate, Kušba is always busy - as any other functioning city-state is bound to be. At various corners, storehouses for all types of goods and wares are found, owned, and guarded. Any good man or woman may enter and take whatsoever they need - with a bit of coin, or perhaps a barter of some essential things.

And here, Iskā - one of the city's many maidens - is here to take a few things. She has the coin, but the guard apparently let her in because of her charm and beauty. Of course, one may wonder whether a regular maiden such as Iskā could ever possess such beauty; but then, anything is possible in a city of 10,000 people...

Imitation Passion

A.D 64. Rome has burnt down. The rumors are spreading. Nero, in an attempt to save himself, blames the followers of a new and suspicious faith - those so called 'Christians.' Imprisonment, torture, and spectacular deaths follow.

Minstrels

Being a musician was hard those days. For, unless you had the patronage of a good lord or prince, you had no steady source of income as one. You'd be forced to live a wanderer's life, singing your way through cities and towns, desperately hoping they'd toss a few copper coins for all your skillful playing and strained singing.

Having to support yourself and a sibling on such a difficult lifestyle was never easy. There were days when both of us had earned enough to scarf down a bowl of warm pumpkin soup and a loaf of rye. At other times, it was just enough for a bowl of curds, or a piece of dried corn bread. I'd always give Rhoda the bigger share; "You need it more than I do," I'd always tell her.

She'd tear up, consume it, then embrace me, sobbing. I always told her that it was ok.

Well... those days are over. We eventually found a good family, a baker and his wife, who'd felt that some music could cheer their village up. They'd promised us that we'd never go hungry, ever again.

And so, every day, we'd go out and journey about, singing ballads and playing duets. And every evening, we'd always come back for a hot, sumptuous dinner, made by a loving and caring family.
