Maura’s nightmares were full of everything. They ranged from the dawn of time to the very end of all, to the secrets of the universe and the most trivial of details. It was both a blessing and a curse, especially when she could sometimes see the horrors that befelled her family; past and future.

It was always at the most unexpected times, when her mind was completely at ease when the reminders would sound off screaming alarms.

Mother’s dead because of you. She would still be here if you weren’t born Think of how happy Father would be if you never existed. Murderer!

So many nights and days have passed where she ran to her sister’s side and curled up in her arms until her own breathing calmed down. “Tell me it’s not our fault.” she would beg in broken whispers as the note was re-read before her very eyes, word by word like ghosts haunting the corners of her vision, just clear and bright enough for her to read.

What you should take away from their story is this: that while we may challenge destiny, in the end, it catches up with us.

“Oedipus killed his father because prophecy demanded it.” Shutting her eyes would only make things worse, but they hurt so much. Her tears would glitter brighter than the dim light of the room. “Dad’s living proof of prophecy. It’s a real thing, we’re the reason she had to give up her life.”

No matter who she told, no matter what comfort she sought, the truth was too harsh for her sometimes. Only in her dreams did she feel numb enough not to be afraid. She would dream herself the vision of her birth, and she could stop it all from happening. Even though she could eliminate what she believed was the root of the problem, she did know it would never translate into reality. But the repeated act was cathartic.

Why were dreams always better than the real world?
