THE GUY WHO’S FILMING THE VIDEO I’M WATCHING RN IS LITERALLY SAYING FUCKING THROW HIM A LIFE BELT the people sneering at the migrants are TOURISTS ON THE BOAT I mean wow
I’ve read multiple articles accounting for the above piece of news. this one states that the guy threw himself in the water, the person filming it asked the nearby boat to throw a lifesaving anchor or whatever it’s called to him but the man refused, a lifeguard was about to jump after him but the guy drowned before he could and btw water in venice in this time is fucking freezing so if you can’t swim well and the person is maybe trying to commit suicide if you jump you also might die, I mean look at the fucking circumstances. the police is investigating on that but it looks like he indeed was suicidal. there’s an interview with the head of the lifeguard society/union/whatever it is who said (translating for u): ‘He (the lifeguard I mentioned) took off his jacket and looked around to give it to someone before jumping in but he was distracted by someone on the boat saying the guy was faking it, then he looked better and the migrant already disappeared. if you throw a life belt to someone who’s frozen in ice water they won’t take it, it’s better to grab them from the ground. I don’t want to blame anyone but yes, maybe we could have done something more to save him.’ Which obviously means they could have done more but ffs it’s not like everyone was watching the guy die. also ppl on the boats have a ban to dive in after ppl in danger while they’re obligated to throw life belts
this one is from a local newspaper. translating the relevant bit for you: ‘the images from five different amatorial videos made clear the suicidal intentions of the young african man. everything happens in a very short time. from the video it’s clear that Pateh Sabally (BTW CALL THE GUY BY HIS NAME MAYBE Y’ALL) jumped in the water and took off his jacket. the young man voluntarily dived underneath and then emerged again. it seems like he floats towards the center of the canal. in that moment the boat passes by: the pilot sees what’s happening, goes back to help. the pilot and the passengers throw four life belts one after the other. there’s a moment when Pateh is surrounded by them but doesn’t grab any of them. the sailor opens the door towards the upper part of the ship to try and grab the man but he can’t reach him in a last, desperate attempt. all useless. in that moment, Pateh ends up under the boat and doesn’t re-emerge again’. NO ONE HELPED, HUH.
btw 300 people came together in that place to hold a ceremony for the poor guy bringing flowers with the colours of the Gambia flag, both other refugees (including Pateh’s brother who lives in Milan) and people from venice. and there was also the head of venice’s islamic community plus people from associations all over the country had something to say. obviously it’d have been better if the man had lived in the first place but OH MY GOD YOU’RE ALL SO RACIST YOU DON’T CARE. okay.

Italy halted rescue efforts and wants to deport many refugees. >> WHO THE FUCK COOKED UP THIS SHIT. italy hasn’t halted anything BECAUSE IF WE STOP RESCUE EFFORTS PPL DROWN AND IT’S A HUMANITARIAN CRIME, if you mean ‘we stepped back on them some and don’t rescue as many people’… wow, as stated, NO ONE HAS THE FUCKING MONEY AND THE EU PREFERS TO PAY ERDOGAN TO KEEP REFUGEES IN TURKEY THAN HELP US AND THE GREEKS I mean. like. also ‘WANTS TO DEPORT’ nope. if you’re a refugee you are allowed to ask for humanitarian protection or refugee status and until then you can’t be deported unless you committed a crime already or some shit. unless you don’t want to get listed here bc then thanks to dublin treaty you can’t leave anymore
italy’s system is btw fucked up, and has enormous room for improvement, but sure as fuck I don’t want to hear suggestions from y’all since you have no idea how it works in the first place and you know nothing about this country and it’s issues
but racism doesn’t exist in europe >>> LITERALLY no one ever said that. however, people say that ‘racism in europe is different from racism in the US because guess what europe is not the US’, which to y’all 99% of the times translates into ‘europeans are saying they aren’t racist’, which is not the truth at all, we’re just saying that we are but parameters in europe aren’t the same as in the US. (for one, people of color = black people only, but never mind.)
before someone comes and tells me that I’m a racist white horrid person who understands nothing about refugee’s plight: I’ve been working with two different association whose target is teaching the language to refugees and immigrants, I talk to more non-white people than white people daily at this point of my life and since I’m in the actual fucking field I know what I’m talking about sure as hell more than you do.
