Wait, what could possibly make Barris better than Cullen? At least Cullen had the spine to leave the Templar Order.
Hey, I’m definitely not saying he’s this super great amazing person, but he’s definitely better than Cullen. He’s on my list of templars that don’t 100% suck.
Unlike Cullen who dreamed and freely signed up to join the templars, Barris had no choice in the matter; he was given to them by his parents. So I blame him no more for joining than I blame Alistair. Which is none.
His father did so because “Delrin has the stomach for fighting, but no love for it. The boy is even-tempered, thinks swiftly, and shows no interest in the affairs of a bann. Train him as a knight, and he will grow into a man who does the Order credit.” Barris himself did not even want to go.
“At least Cullen had the spine to leave the Templar Order,” lmao yeah all in name, but the guy still whole-hardheartedly supports them and even wears the insignia on his armour. Whereas Barris doesn’t even argue with the Inquisitor for disbanding the templars. Instead he agrees. Unlike Cullen, who wasn’t even there.
He was bullied in training for being so sombre.
His first big task was him being sent to apprehend a group of blood mages. However it turned out much more complicated; “a chaotic brawl between a cult of blood mages, an unbound pride demon, a passing Dalish clan, a pair of Seekers, and Tal-Vashoth mercenaries enslaved by blood magic.” But he solved the problem without having to kill anyone, where you know for a fact most templars (including Cullen) would just go in and cut down whoever was in their path. In the report he sent back: “The demon has been slain, the mages are subdued, the Qunari freed, the Seekers mollified, and the Dalish returned to the woods.”
He was the only templar willing to speak out against the Lord Seeker in the middle of Val Royeaux.
Where I’d say at least 80% of the templars we’ve seen in Dragon Age would immediately cut down a mage for being called an abomination, and it would be called for the good of Thedas, Barris saves a kid in that exact situation in a war table mission.
So, all in all, Delrin Barris isn’t that bad. And keep in mind coming from me, that’s like the highest praise you’ll probably ever hear me give to a templar.
