What’s four inches long, covered in spines, and has an insatiable appetite for flesh?
A red-eyed devil katydid (Neobarettia spinosa), native to the deserts of the American Southwest, of course! These are not your average garden variety katydids that eat leaves - they are fierce predators with huge appetites and in addition to other insects they may prey on frogs and even lizards in the wild. All of which they eat alive.
These katydids are flightless, but retain tiny useless wings that they spread when they’re grumpy to make themselves look even more impressive.
They are mostly bluff, but they will bite and start trying to eat you if your hand smells like food.
