honestly hair pulling is so fucking based as a means of physical control like —- there’s just no choice — they don’t stand a chance. It’s like nature’s leash. Either they follow the direction of the hair pull or get their hair yanked out. And their brain’s base instincts will do anything to avoid getting their scalp torn/hair ripped out. It’s perfect for dragging a whumpee by the hair across the room or down the hall. Or using a hair grip to hold their head in place while you slap the ever loving shit out of them. Grabbing their hair and yanking them down to their knees. Shoving them face down onto a surface with a tight fistful of their hair—holding their head down against that surface with a fierce grip, maybe twisting your wrist if you wanna hear some pretty noises. Dragging them UP by the hair to look at their pretty red face while they pant and gasp after getting hit a bunch of times… hearing them groan against the pain as you shake their head side to side… hair grabbing hair pulling… it’s just so humiliating and so so based…

As a Jewish person who suffers from bipolar disorder, I have no sympathy for Kanye West. Bipolar disorder turned me into an apathetic, irresponsible person, sure, but it never turned me into a fucking Nazi. There is no manic episode that could make me shout racist slurs, or spew such vile things. When I was manic, I turned into a promiscuous alcoholic, not a bigot. Turning into a Nazi isn't in the DSM5, I can assure you.
Kanye West has more followers on Twitter than there are Jews worldwide. He is one of the most famous people on earth. The fact he can go on an antisemitic rampage without consequences is terrifying. If you're not a Jew, your Jewish friends need your allyship more than ever right now.
Kanye West isn't an asshole because he's bipolar. He's a racist, antisemitic asshole who happens to be bipolar.
Are you existing in a depression nest right now?
Checking in on my depression nest buddies out there. If you're currently burrito-ed in bed or peeking out of the blankets like a couch goblin, keeping up with the mess is probably the last thing you want to do. However, if you can muster up a tiny bit of energy for a few minutes, taking care of your immediate environment or yourself a little really can make such a difference. Can you try one, part of one, or more than one of these?
Clear some dishes/trash from the immediate area
Take a shower and/or change your clothes
Clear some stuff off the nearest flat surface (nightstand/coffee table/etc.)
Change out your bedding
Put 5 things near you away
Eat something and have some water
If you can only do one or a small part of one, that's great! Every little bit helps you get through and makes things easier on yourself once you're coming out of it. Be kind to yourself and remember that taking care of yourself is important and worthwhile.
Whumptober 2022
Welcome to Whumptober 2022, in its fifth year of running!
To those of you who participated last year, welcome back! To everyone new, WELCOME!
Please make sure to read the Event Info carefully, as most of your questions will be answered there already. For everything else, you are welcome to come to our ask box or ask questions in our Discord server here.
This year’s AO3 Collection can be found here.
With that being said, we’re very excited to see the community come together once more and be a wild, chaotic bunch of creators and consumers of whump. Go wild with the prompts, and support your fellow creators, see what juicy whump they’ve created too! We wish you all the fun!
(All 31 Themes + Prompts, Event Information and FAQs are posted below the cut!)
Writing thoughts for previously hurt/abused/neglected characters
Okay, so you know your character's past. You know they're still affected by that past, even if it's been years since that Thing happened. I feel like there are a couple of self-soothing things they would do:
Always wearing long sleeves, sweaters, or hoodies. (Maybe to hide scars, maybe because being wrapped up or covered is soothing.)
Blankets everywhere! Being warm is soothing, and blankets offer a certain amount of warmth, cover, and a mental shield of sorts. It's hard to catch this character not wrapped in a blanket while chilling on the couch reading or watching a movie.
Hesitant to initiate touch, or flinches when another character physically reaches for them, regardless of intent. It could be an intimate moment where their love interest is simply reaching to brush their hair back from their face, and your character flinches. It's an ingrained, unconscious response to past hurt or abuse, and it can take YEARS to break out of it. (Ask me how I know.)
Wary of others' intent towards them. Whether this in the form of friendship or romance, their past makes them wary of others because they've been tricked before by someone who seemed wonderful at the outset, only to show their true colors later on.
Insanely grateful to others for just being treated like a human being with thoughts and feelings of their own. It's been so long since they haven't been expected to fill a certain role, and were just allowed to BE. They're finally starting to realize (if they weren't already aware) that their past was unhealthy, which is the first step towards recovery. If the other character(s) also give them the tools to rebuild their life (a place to stay, assist with finding a job/going back to school, feeding and/or clothing them, getting them into therapy, etc), those other characters are looking at to-the-death loyalty.
In the case of past neglect, your character is probably touch-starved. They may or may not seek out touch, but nearly any touch from others will make them SUPER happy, even if it's accidental. If allowed, they would probably be very tactile with others (hugging, holding hands, cuddling, etc)--regardless of platonic or romantic status. However, they may be hesitant to seek out such touch, so other characters may have to initiate it and assure them that it really is okay to seek out touch.
Anxiety and/or depression is common, and COMPLETELY NORMAL! It takes time for your character to find an even keel, and a healthy support network is crucial for them. If they need medical intervention in some way (therapy sessions, medications, hospital stays for the really severe incidents), that is also normal, and nothing to be ashamed of. Depending on their society or personal history, they may still carry feelings of shame at their perceived weakness, and/or forcing others (by the situation) to take care of them.
Just throwing these out there, in case anyone finds this helpful! Feel free to add things I may have missed!

Trope: Plagued by Nightmares
A character has consistent nightmares, hinting at deeper issues.
whumpee has trauma from what they went through, consistently having nightmares about the event
whumpee has night terrors and thrashes around in their sleep
whumpee screams at night when they wake from their nightmares, causing them to be ashamed of sleeping around or within earshot of others because they don't want to disturb them
whumpee being kicked out of their apartment building for causing too much of a disturbance with their loud awakenings from the nightmares
whumpee refusing to sleep because they don't want to have nightmares
whumpee staying awake until they collapse so they will just black out and not dream
whumpee drinking themselves into a stupor so they'll black out and not dream
whumpee stumbling through the day, unable to think about anything
whumpee with dark bags under their heavy-lidded eyes
whumpee who avoids others because their patience is wearing thin with how little sleep they're getting
whumpee who's relationships with others fizzle out because whumpee is isolating themselves / pushing others away / lashing out from lack of sleep
whumpee being found sleeping in the oddest places, even in the middle of the day
@whumptober2019 | day 2: explosion
Emotional explosions.
Whumpers who have been calm and measured in their abuse of the whumpee, only to explode when they discover a particular kind of disobedience, or are just straight up having a bad day. Exploding in rage and savage violence.
Caretakers who can't stand to be patient and gentle anymore. They're frustrated and anxious and sad and they just want the whumpee to be better. They just want them to be well. They explode over something small and insignificant, they explode to a friend, they explode in the supermarket, they explode away from earshot of the whumpee. They think.
Whumpees who have been keeping everything inside of them and trying to stay calm or well behaved or dignified. But they're not okay. Of course they're not okay. And then one day theres something. A trigger, a whumper gone too far, maybe they've just reached breaking point. Straw that broke the camel's back. They explode in screams, explode in tears, explode by throwing things or holding themselves or reciting things that were beaten into them. They explode suddenly and without warning, and no one knows how to handle them after that.
Whumpees who have become used to the way they're treated by the whumper, have come to terms with the fact the whumper is cruel and will always hurt them, always take an opportunity to degrade and humiliate. Then they see the whumper interacting with a stray dog on the porch. The whumper treats the near-feral animal with more kindness and tenderness than they've ever afforded the whumpee even in passing. The whumpee explodes in indignation and fury.
Whumpees who are fine, thank you very much, they're completely fine. Everybody stop asking because they're fine. They're fucking fine. They're fine, they're fine, they're fine, stop asking, they're fine, alright? They're great. Completely fucking fine, so stop asking
Whumpees who explode when the whumper tries to hurt someone else.
Caretakers who explode when the whumpee puts themself in danger again
Whumpers who explode sporadically, at random. The whumpee never knows when it will happen, or what lights the fuse.
Whumpees exploding when people get too close, look to carefully. They don't have to talk about it if nobody's asking questions. And nobody asks questions if nobody's around. Nobody will stay around a bomb. Nobody could love a volcano.
Whumpee is out on a mission with a much older member of the team (the team leader, or perhaps Whumpee’s mentor, all that matters is that they have a few decades on Whumpee) when tragedy strikes and Whumpee is seriously injured. Teammate manages to get Whumpee to safety, and when they finally reach a place where Whumpee can get medical attention, somebody mistakes Teammate for Whumpee’s parent.
Teammate just goes along with it, because Whumpee is losing blood fast and it will make everything easier. If they’re at a hospital, it’ll allow Teammate to stay by Whumpee’s bedside without being shooed away by medical personnel; if they aren’t so lucky and they’re at a dingy motel in the middle of nowhere, it’ll stop the receptionist, who’s eyeing the half-conscious, blood-covered Whumpee with suspicion, from asking too many pointed questions.
But as soon as Whumpee’s patched up and resting comfortably, all the adrenaline leaves Teammate in a sudden burst and they have to sit down as they realize - in a lot of ways, Whumpee is the kid they never had. They care about Whumpee as much as they would a family member, and they’d gladly put themself in harm’s way before they’d ever intentionally let Whumpee get hurt. And they almost lost their kid tonight.
The team was taking a break for the night. They had a long journey ahead of them and they came across a good spot as the sun finished setting. Sore as hell, they were all ready to relax.
One of the members sets up a tent to themselves. Once inside, they get out a bottle of water and reach into a hidden pocket in their bag for--
...Nothing, apparently. They could've sworn they put the bottle of pills right here. Frantically they tore through other pockets, turning their bag upside down to empty out all the contents but still, nothing.
The withdrawal symptoms were already setting in. Their ears rang and a distinct buzz overtook their head as they trembled. This was bad.
