I sat here staring at that last panel for a solid minute, reading then reading again. This is just something else.

This moved me.

My parents live in this town and the city legally can’t tear the tree down to build or anything because the tree has its own legal rights and they can’t do anything about it.

I love this story because this guy in the early 1800’s had so many great childhood memories of this tree and wanted to make sure it was protected no matter what. So he deeded the ownership of the tree to itself and everyone just went with it.

Then in 1942 this intense windstorm came and knocked the tree over. And people were bummed. But someone had saved an acorn from the original tree, so they planted that and now Son of the Tree That Owns Itself is over 50 feet tall.

And since this new tree is technically the offspring of the original tree it’s considered to have legally inherited the plot of land it’s inhabiting.

Two generations of trees owning land is amazing and if you don’t think this is the coolest thing get right out of my face.

I know just how heavy the words “I’m in love with you” are. I did not unload them onto you because I wanted to hear you say it back, I unloaded them because it was too much to keep carrying inside of me. It was too much to keep hiding that feeling between my bones and inside of my heart. I am in love with you, and I know those words have been thrown around for centuries and written down an endless amount of times and translated into so many different languages but I am in love with you. And I know forever is a lot to promise to someone, and it is not guaranteed, but I want to spend my forever with you. I don’t know what is going to happen in the future but right here, right now, I want you to know I want to be with you forever, however long that is. I look into your eyes and I can already see my future. I taste years and years of happiness on your tongue. I feel a life worth living when I’m touching your skin.
