Even confused (and slightly suspicious) as she was, she didn’t mind being rushed along very much. It was nice to just be around Steve again, and she figured that whatever was bugging him, it would come out eventually in one way or another. She let out a quiet sigh as they waited through the elevator’s descent, enjoying the comfortable silence between them, leaning against Steve slightly as she waited for them to reach the ground floor.
Abby had known all the risks when she first fell for him. She’d known when she finally blurted out that first night that he was more than just a friend to her, known that he had enemies and that they would be ruthless, and that there was no guarantee she wouldn’t be pulled into his fights. But Abby was a big girl, and she made sure to show him that. She could handle herself, and she wouldn’t let anything scare her away from him, not when she felt how she did.
And she trusted him, trusted that he would do his best to keep her safe. So when they stepped out of the elevator, she glanced up at him, waiting to follow his lead. “Well, I guess you know where you’re going. Lead the way, soldier." She grinned, her hand easily fitting into his as they left the lobby. “So where is this burger place, anyways? Is it far?"
"No ma'am, just a little ways up the street about a block" and when he walked people moved away from him, the sea of people parting to let them through. He hated that honestly. Sometimes Steve would give anything just to fade back into the crowds like he used to. Of course he didn't miss getting brushed off to the side but, with all good there was bad.
And a lot of people had it worse then he did so Steve shouldn't be complaining. He had a great girl on his arm and a the prospect of a good future ahead of him. The idea that it could all come crashing down wasn't an option.
"I figured we could take it to go and sit by the lake in central park? What do you think?"
All he wanted was something quite and private where they could just talk and be together.
