SEPTEMBER 27TH, 2022.
Sunghoon wished he had listened. Really, he did.
Of course he knew what he did wrong. He wasn’t stupid— just wasn’t brave enough. Not when he couldn’t admit it to you. You couldn’t get a word out of him even if you tried.
So with the familiar feeling of a child too stubborn to come clean, Sunghoon decides that it’s best he stands next to you in silence. It was late September when you two spontaneously grabbed the nearest available tickets for the fast train to Busan, just so you could stroll down Gwangalli beach to end the day a little more kindly. Neither of you had a very pleasant one, with exams coming near as you both must carry the weight of trying to be the grown adults you’ve wanted your parents to be most proud of.
And as heavy as it sounds, for some reason, that wasn’t even half of it. There was something else, definitely— following around like the name of an old friend that’s been waiting to be mentioned. It was much heavier, much more dreadful, and it’s been around longer than you think. But you just couldn’t put a name on it, and it was starting to frustrate you, especially today. You wonder if Sunghoon notices it too.
Your shoulders bump into one another every once in a while as you walk, and his hands were dug far beneath his pockets, though a bit awkwardly. In between you both was your phone in hand, playing that song you had just shared with him earlier in the day. That and the waves were the only two things that could distract you both from how oddly loud your hearts were beating in your ears, and how remarkably heavy the air still felt, despite the fact that you’ve come all the way here just to forget about it.
You try to distract yourself by listening to the very song that reminded you of Sunghoon a little. And finally, you spoke up. “Do you miss it?”
“Miss what?”
“Skating.” Earlier that year in the Winter, Sunghoon had torn his ACL in the midst of preparing for internationals, automatically cutting him off the line.
When Sunghoon had to undergo his surgery and a two-month stay at home, you were there, overstaying your welcome no matter how many times his family and friends had tried to pry you away from your spot (so you could go rest on your own). No matter how many sorrowed looks you’ve received in the halls of the hospital waiting room (when you would almost fall asleep on your chair). Even after your boyfriend woke up from procedure to rest a few days more in the hospital— you’d rest with him— only leaving to go shower or pick up some of his things from his house. And then you’d come back to stay for him.
When Sunghoon was put on an indefinite hiatus, it felt like his own little world had suddenly become wide enough to swallow him whole. Like the ground had disappeared.
He was just trying to make it to a quad axel he needed for his final performance. “You don’t need to do it if you can’t,” His coach had warned him. But he could do it. He was almost there. He just needed perfect. But perfect had led him to a sudden crack through the right knee, and before he could even process it, his full body landed hard on ice, burning the heels of his palms and entire forearms as he slid. His legs slowly began to numb. And he couldn’t move— not even the slightest bit to push himself up.
But the first thing that came to Sunghoon’s mind wasn’t the need to call for help. It was the humiliating fact that he failed, and that alone was going to take him a lot more effort than he already had needed to give.
And suddenly, he felt so small.
“I do,” He finally returns your gaze, “I miss it a lot.”
He pauses to debate with himself once more, staring down at his fingers that softly drummed against his thighs.
“I actually, uh– talked to Coach Choi about it the other day. But she refused my call and said that I wasn’t ready to go back yet. Can you believe her?” He laughs, shaking his head in disbelief. But when he looks back at you, you weren’t laughing with him. In fact, you weren’t laughing at all.
“Would it be the end of the world if you aren’t?” You muttered so quietly that it was almost inaudible. Your hands were sweating as you mindlessly picked at the dead skin of your nails to stop yourself from showing any signs of regret— though you were kind of failing as you speak. This was something you’ve been needing to sit down and talk with Sunghoon for a while now, and you needed to stand your ground.
“What do you mean?” Sunghoon’s smile faltered as he shifted his angle to come forward with you face-to-face, but you were unreadable. So… annoyingly… unreadable. His eyes hardened, and his face has dropped completely by now. “You think I’m not ready?”
“I just think maybe you should take some more time to think this through, Sunghoon.” You look up from your hands to gather as much courage as possible. “I mean— is Coach wrong? Who could blame her? Who could just stand there and watch you repeatedly push yourself over the edge trying to perfect one thing that could ruin you for the rest of your life?”
“Me losing this career could ruin me for the rest of my life, Y/N.” Sunghoon explains this to you like it was already obvious. “Of course I’m going to push myself over— that’s what working towards your goal is all about.”
“And you could lose it for good by hurting yourself, Sunghoon!” You cried, curling your hands into fists so hard that you start to feel your nails painfully digging beneath your skin. “I can’t— I can’t have you risk it. Not when you’re going to lose yourself all over again. It’s killing me, Hoon. I’ll never forgive myself if I let you go through that again by just watching.”
You were begging him at this point, pleading— eyes barely holding it together at the minimal thought. Your hands finally opened so you could find his to grasp onto, but Sunghoon had already pulled away before you even got the chance.
“Then don’t.” He mutters, pushing the weight off his heels as he starts to head towards the end of the beach. “I’m sorry I’ve been wasting your time.”
“Sunghoon—“ You follow him like you know what you’re doing, but your heart was already dropping a lot more than it needed to. Your hands start to tremble, and your legs were on the verge of giving out as you nearly trip yourself over. And suddenly, the sand wasn’t beneath your feet anymore. No— You weren’t even at the beach. Nothing could recall to your vision but the back of the man you were trying to reach out for.
“Sunghoon, that’s not what I meant—I’m sorry.” You called out, trying to get a hold of anything from him at this point, your breath falling in short. “I know how much it means to you and—”
“While we’re being honest, Y/N,” He suddenly turns around, making you stop right behind him at an abrupt halt. “I feel ashamed to be with you.”
And then it fell to the pit of your stomach.
“Everytime I look up from my bed, when I look up from my crutches— Hell, even now. All I see is a look of pity. And that’s what kills me the most. Knowing that I’ve let so many people down, and now all of a sudden I’m expected to need their help. Especially yours.” Sunghoon takes in a deep breath, chest rising, and his eyes almost go soft as he takes a quick glance of the ocean behind you. It almost looked as if there was something else he wanted to say. But that only lasted for one good second.
“But I didn’t ask for it. I didn’t ask for any of this. I didn’t need your help.”
“You don’t mean that.” You didn’t want to believe him, but somehow, you already did. You’ve been making up this scenario in your head to prepare for it—so often that now it just feels like another dream passing by. You've been here before. In your head. You should have seen this coming. You thought you did. But your thoughts have become his words that rolled off the tip of his tongue so easy. Like he’s been waiting for it.
Others may have let it slide as overthinking. “It’s all in your head”, but it became a waking nightmare. “It’s all in your head”, and now, it was real. You were right, but at a painful, horrible cost.
And how mortifying it was to learn that you’ve been right all along.
Sunghoon’s tongue grazes across his teeth as his jaw tightens. And then he looks at you, really looks at you, and you’re realizing now this is the first time he’s ever done so today. But it wasn’t familiar. You don’t even know what you’re looking at anymore. In his eyes, nothing was there.
“I don’t need you.” And his gaze did not falter with his words.
He doesn’t need you.
What a funny thing to hear from the one person you needed the most.
You haven’t realized it yet, but you were trembling, and it was hard to tell whether it was from the cold or the fact that you were about to cry (You were kind of leaning more towards the latter). You haven’t realized it until you notice Sunghoon quickly shrugging off his jacket to throw it around your shoulders like it was second nature. As if he even meant it. How funny of him to do this now, as if he didn’t just step on your heart like it meant nothing to him three seconds ago. But just as fast as he could put it on, you shoved him away, forcing him to take his jacket back.
“Get the fuck away from me,” You tried to be strong. Despite your voice breaking, you really tried to be. You frantically wipe your eyes, blinking, trying to at least see whatever’s in front of you without a problem. “You don’t need me? Fine. In fact— Stay away from me. I don’t want to see you ever again.”
The second you turned on your heel, your tears roamed. You didn’t care how stupid you looked at this point, your vision unfocused as you trip over the sand like a fawn trying to learn how to walk for the first time. You honestly weren’t sure if you were running. You just wanted to get out of there as soon as you could.
And he didn’t even try to follow.
But truthfully, you don’t know what you’d rather have. A man who sees you for your worst or a man who doesn’t want to see you at all.
Either way, the minute he was out of sight, your knees gave in. With one hand trying to suppress your heart from beating, the other pushed itself against your gut. You almost thought you were going to vomit everything you had left in you.
Breathing was barely even a second thought in your mind. You were gasping for it instead. You grabbed two handfuls of sand in a way to somehow ground yourself, to tell yourself that you’re still here and okay, but then you felt nothing at all. The sand was gone. Everything you had with Sunghoon was gone. And they spilled through the gaps of your fingers like it was nothing. Your fists were starting to numb. Then with a heavy heart, you swallow the unavoidable feeling of loss at last, collapsing onto the ground with a loud and defeated sob.
By now, the sun had dipped far below the horizon. You don't recall what it looked like, nor if you even had the chance to look at it at all. But the moon is out, everything felt a little colder, and you forced yourself to accept the coastal breeze as your only blanket. Your arms wrapped around themselves on their own, squeezing the life out of your shoulders, pacing up and down, and still— you felt nothing. Everything was cold.
You think about how pretty the moon must be tonight. You don’t find the strength to look.
So with your face pressed to the sand—its grains clinging on due to your wet tears—you silently prayed for the ocean to eat you alive. For the sake of wanting even the smallest peace of mind, you waited for any tide to cradle you and hold you like a child being put to sleep. To take you as far as it wants you to be, whether it be to new land, or the bottomless pit, you don’t care— as long as you won’t be found.
And true to your word, you never saw Park Sunghoon again.
