I wear gear pretty much every time I go out, cat ears and (unless I’m at school or don’t want to suffer a belt) tail. The amount of times I’ve had people of various ages come up to me ecstatic and asking if I’m a fellow therian is amazing.

A young girl who had to have been early middle school-aged at the oldest in particular practically dragged me around the roller skating rink when I confirmed that I was also a therian. There were actually an absurd amount of therians there. What is it with us and roller skating???

I had someone compliment my ears and tell me they were a sea otter at my high school once, but most interactions I have are with younger kids. Whether they clock me as a therian or the other way around*, I love seeing how happy it makes younger therians to see an older therian that definitely wasn’t just “following a trend”.

It’s important to have someone to let the younger people in your community know you’re there and that the future is waiting for them with open arms. No amount of odd comments (of which I actually get very little but that’s just my town) can outweigh the joy of support and community I’ve found and contributed to by letting myself be more open. There’s probably a lot more fellow alterhumans around than you think there are. Try looking for a skating rink if you can’t find any (silly)

*Wearing tails and ears also makes starting these interactions less awkward because now the younger kids in gear know that the older kid waving to them isn’t hoping to bully them lol.
