A bit different than the asks you usually get, but I'm a young Arab confused about how to deal with the anger and exhaustion and self-doubt I feel, seeing how rampant anti-Arab racism is in certain spaces and I was wondering if you have, like, tips? I was looking through the account of an academic I looked up to from a field I plan on going into, and saw that they liked back to back posts on how "Palestinians and Arabs as a whole are evil, and they're terrorists, and they don't deserve media attention, and all the media attention should be on the poor Israelis as they are being targeted and killed by evil, barbarian Arabs" and words can't describe how angry and sorrowful I felt. My hands are shaking even now as I'm writing this. To see such hateful rhetoric being spread by someone I used to respect hurt a lot. And this is an entire ass scholar (who is widely respected in his field!), mind you, as were the people behind those posts. And I know that no one is immune to being racist but I had genuinely expected better and was baffled and disgusted by how rampant such ideas were and how casually they were circulated. Excuse me for making this ask insanely long, but I genuinely don't know how to cope with that. It makes me feel terrible, seeing all this hate everywhere.

My only advice is to generally ignore them. It is hard seeing people call us slurs, denying us of our humanity and the such but growing thicker skin and a louder voice is the only thing we can do.

I’m surprised this scholar didn’t face any pushback for such blatant racism, but then again we have an “anti-woke” and “fuck political correctness” problem in the sciences (at least in the west) and still name species of birds and insects after infamously racist assholes eg. generals of the confederacy, members of the Nazi party, etc etc.

Ps. This is only a few paragraphs, I wouldn’t worry about it being “insanely long” since most people can read it just fine. The only ones who won’t be able to comprehend this are the “gng” TikTokers.

Having to pick "white" on the race questionnaire thing is actually diabolical

It was because of a Syrian man wanting to be naturalised back in the 1910s. Ever since then the U.S government has refused to classify us as anything other than white despite most of us looking visibly like people of colour.

Coming from an ex Muslim who very much love their culture, thinking everyone who speaks Arabic, lives in an Arabic contrey, or simply is Arabic is automatically Muslim is racist AND islamophopic

Considering most Muslims aren't even Arabs it's annoying to just exist and someone imedtitly think you follow a religion that you very much disagree with just for your race

This might be an overreaction from me and let me know if it is, but I despise when an Arab song becomes trendy and it's all just skinny white women belly dancing to it (sometimes even wearing a bedlah!) meanwhile the Arab belly dancers who do the dance are bullied, called fat, and recieve far less attention than the white women do

I really hate how whitewashed and sexualized belly dancing has become. God forbid I want to engage with a part of my culture without seeing it get dominated by white women. It really gets under my skin but I have no idea if I'm just being dramatic or this really is cultural appropriation that people have trouble acknowledging it

It’s either white women bellydancing to it or people putting it on the most random shit. This is why I dread Arab music getting out of our sphere because I know they’ll never be normal about it.

What’s saddening is the fact how many Arabs genuinely don’t care. Outside of [tumblr] it has become normal to deny the effects of orientalism.

We will be happy about something as shitty as Aladdin because it’s the only thing we’re getting.
