Victory nodded with understanding at the mention of invasive photographers and reporters, she knew the feeling of being judged aggressively by paparazzi in New York City all too well to mistake here and now. She followed gracefully after Ezra, walking purposefully as camera’s flashed from almost all sides. Once inside a more private section of the gala, Ezra made mention of her old life and Victory subtly noted the tattoo hidden under a dazzling bracelet. She spoke, “This will be my first debut in Gotham City, as well, though it is not my first visit. My father has traveled here many times throughout my childhood and even before I was born.” She decided not to admit she’d never been in Gotham’s city limits with so few on security detail for her, let alone without her father nearby. “Tell me, what’s the latest of Gotham’s gossip? Just between us girls.”

When Victory had stepped off of her college campus into a town car to be escorted away for her spring break, she knew without a doubt that in her bedroom awaited an extensive pile of new textbooks and assignments relentlessly devised by her father so she could continue his education regimen while all her classmates took a real break. This knowledge, of course, led her to the realization that her only true “break time” would be the 35 minute car ride from school to home, and so she had the radio turned up to ears-ringing-ly loud and began to balter. Purposefully she swung her arms violently to music she didn’t even like that much, laughing at the thought of how she must have looked. She was so engulfed in her ridiculousness she didn’t realize her car had rolled to a complete stop in traffic and noticed much too late that another person in the car beside her was ogling her with an unreadable expression. Her cheeks reddened as her movement slowed and died away, eyes locked with the stranger’s.

Riri has been passed the ‘ooooohs and ‘awwws’ of meeting anyone affiliated with Tony Stark. She has been around technology her entire life, even though she built most of it herself. The mansion is BEAUTIFUL, and she is excited to fulfil her dreams of being an engineer and a hero. But to be around the Futurist daughter? She was unsure. 

      ❝ Are you–A CHAMPION or YOUNG AVENGER? Like Ms. Marvel, Nova, and Spider-Man? They let me in a little while ago. ❞

Victory’s smile did not falter as she folded her arms across her chest neatly, not unlike her father did, and leaned back resiliently as she answered, “I am affiliated with neither. Being a superhero- not exactly the first on my list of priorities.” She glanced between her father and Riri, “I am however a certified genius and college graduate. My father being Tony Stark? Yeah, that’s just a foot note, in my opinion.” She could feel her dad’s smirk. She refused to give him the satisfaction of looking to confirm that look on his face that she knew so well.

“Are you interested in becoming a hero to this city? Or even to the world?” Her eyebrows raised slightly with intrigue, as if the question alone was a source of excitement.

“ Well if it isn’t Ms. Victory Stark..” Ezra smiled standing on the red carpet. “ Let introduce myself Ezra Wayne, welcome to Gotham.” She gave another wave to the flashing camera’s “ my sister couldn’t make it to greet you it seems but … May I add that your gown is gorgeous.”

“Ezra Wayne, it’s a pleasure.” Victory smiled pleasantly and leaned in for a gentle hug accompanied by two air kisses: one on each of her cheeks. “Forgive my ignorance but,” Victory paused, a sweet grin across her lips, “Might there be a relation to Martha and Thomas Wayne I haven’t been briefed on.” She placed a perfectly manicured hand across her bare chest, the strapless dress hugging around her shoulders snugly. “Thank you so much. You look devastatingly stunning as well.”

Riri was growing nervous. Is this other girl STUDYING her? Why does it feel as though she is speaking with another adult? Victory is not as arrogant or bossy. Still, after meeting with the CHAMPIONS, this is slightly–underwhelming.

Victory smiled with less enthusiasm as she had began with, and she hadn’t expected to grow tired of the interaction with Riri so soon. She was very intrigued by Riri, knowing full well that it took a lot to impress her father. Still, Riri herself seemed bored, or perhaps uncomfortable. Victory’s domineering nature told her the other was possibly intimidated- after all, Riri wasn’t the only young woman in the room whose reputation preceded her. What did Riri know about Victory, then? She wasn’t letting on to know very much. The only other explanation for her short responses would be that Riri was apathetic and/or unimpressed with Victory.

Victory had worked hard to create her own persona as a woman of a certain caliber, a separate entity from her noteworthy parent. A respectable, powerful force in her own right, being the daughter of Iron Man was merely an addition to her repertoire. “So, now that I know quite a bit about you, would you like to ask me any questions? I know getting to know each other can be a stale process.”

“Adrienna Keleece Williams? I like it. And at least it’s a person’s name and not a random word.” Victory smiles jokingly and tosses a mischievous glance at her father, who stands on the sidelines with arms folded purposefully across his chest, firsts tucked into elbows, surveying over designer sunglasses which certainly need not be worn in-doors. He hmm’s smally in acknowledgment- a subtle prompt for Victory to proceed on her own without expectation of assistance or interruption from her dad. He is expecting a certain level of competency in even this small social interaction. Something must be really special about this girl.

“So, tell me about yourself, Riri.” Victory stepped towards the refrigerator and raised a hand to it, “My dad failed to mention you’d be visiting until last minute, actually. Would you like a drink? We have everything.” The fridge, which Victory was now realizing appeared like an ordinary wall of polished white before it lit up, revealed a compartment, and produced a glass bottle of Coca-Cola, the lid removed silently behind literal closed doors.

Why does the girl feel as if this was an INTERVIEW? Riri has not been around other children her age often, but Victory’s mannerisms are so different. Must be from her wealthy upbringing. 

         ❝ Um, I think the news tells you everything you need. And the police report.❞

Victory smiled, she liked orange soda but hadn’t had any in a long while. Nevertheless, she waved a hand over the same place and a glass bottle of orange soda was revealed, still fizzing with excitement at the prospect of finally being chosen at a beverage. Victory grasped the bottle, cold to the touch and handed it graciously over to her guest. “The news?” Police report? “Oh.” A knowing smile emerged on Victory’s features.

She nodded and commented, “You’re the girl who stole my dad’s Model 41.” She was quietly impressed at the daring and the intellect this feat displayed in Riri. “You stopped those prisoners in New Mexico.” Victory felt guilty for neglecting to scrounge up the police reports and other information not available to the public revolving around the incident. She was sure now that her dad had done his research. She thought to pull up the information now on her iPhone but new it would wound her pride too much for the young know-it-all to reveal she was the least informed in the room.

“What was it like? Breaking through my dad’s infamous security systems, I mean.” she leaned in on the kitchen island, a spotless, glistening black and white marble counter top that stretched as far and wide as a 10-seated dinning table. She sipped her coke once, smiled, and teasingly admitted, “I’ve dabbled with his firewalls and coding before, but...” she resolved not to finish her sentence when her father was still quietly observing them.

She leaned in close, whispering in a tightly-wound kind of forced-optimism, “Hey! Listen! Wanna know a secret?” She paused to draw them in, “You’ve been singing poorly to whatever trash is playing through your crappy headphones for almost 30 minutes and now: You’re about this close to getting punched the fuck out.”

Her expression dropped into unmistakable seriousness, “Got it?”

The manor is ENORMOUS. The genius has not seen something this large since M.I.T. She jokes and teases on her way to the mansion, but she is deeply nervous. Riri has always admired Tony Stark, and now she is chosen to work under him. And live here: IN THIS HOUSE. The only thing that worries her is being separated from her mother again. One of the reasons why she hated M.I.T, among snobs and dull classes. 

This is an opportunity to wear the nicest clothes possible, with makeup. She steps in the mansion with a skirt and heels. Her large afro tied to a pony tail. The first she saw was a girl, no older than she is. By the resemble, it had to be her mentor’s daughter. She looks so much like Tony, especially around the eyes. 

Did she say ‘CHARMED’? Yep. Total rich kid.

Two’s Company | Victory & Riri

“Make sure you look presentable, Victory, I’m bringing a guest home for dinner.” Her dad’s voice came through crystal-clear and booming over the intercom he had installed to reach every area of the house. Stark Tower looked like a home at first glance but within those walls, floors, ceilings... lie secret buttons, codes, and scanners that could do much, much more than adjust A/C or flick the lights on. Tony Stark was not home, or on a cellphone, and yet he was speaking directly to his daughter in her bedroom in real-time with no lag. Her television even paused so his interruption would not be interrupted.

Victory sighed and switched gears, it was around 7 o’clock in the evening, she wasn’t expecting her dad to get home from work until after 8:30. Dinner was set for 9 as usual. “Alright, dad. But who is it?” she said out loud, knowing the system would pick up her words even if she muttered under her breath, they might even pick up her thoughts if they were loud enough.

A pause before Tony’s answer rang through, “You’ll see. Just put on a bra.” Another pause. “And shoes.” Victory made an irked face but without having a target to side eye the expression was lost in transmission. “Alright. Will you be home soon?”

“Pulling in now. Meet us in the kitchen.” Victory strode to her closet and through together an outfit: replacing the same NASA sweatshirt over a simple, light pink bra and pulling black and white classic Adidas over black socks that transitioned seamlessly into her black leggings. Now heading for the kitchen, she ran her fingers through her hair to smooth it out a bit, the lights dimming behind her and brightening up ahead of her.

Not much time had passed before a sliding door opened itself to let Tony Stark through with a slim, dark-skinned stranger with darker curly hair. Her face was delicate though her expression was not. She looked young. Tony introduced her as Riri Williams, called her a "smart cookie”- and his eyes lit up in that way they did when he was intrigued by a new toy- and then introduced Victory to her as “my wonderful daughter, Victory Stark”.

Victory smiled congenially, although she was confused as to the meaning of all of this. What was so special and importance about this young girl, and if she was so special and important, why was she being introduced to her now?

“Charmed. Is Riri short for another name? I don’t have any nicknames.” She extended a hand to the stranger.
