“Turn to the next page, then you’ll get to see Carl as a baby.” Leaning over the table he gestured to the album, eyes tired as he sat back in the chair and watched Judith discover all these old memories. It really brought him back to a different time. A time before all this, when Lori was alive. “..You’ve got your mother’s smile.” Looking from a particular photo of Lori smiling while with Carl, he looked at Judith and found himself slightly sad yet he was proud of the person she was becoming.

“Seriously? Are they embarrassing?” Judith kept giggling as she carefully turned the next page. She didn’t want any pictures to fly out or move positions. The book was put together by her mother so carefully. She didn’t want anything in there to move an inch. She looked up at her dad with a big smile. “You really think so?” She always thought Carl looked most like their parents. “When was that one taken?”

“That one- oh man, that was when we went to the Grand Canyon..” Sighing he looked to the old photograph. They’d taken maybe, eight, nine family trips like that? And to say the name of place that held no more meaning, it was strange. A world such as this, it didn’t fit in. Looking to Judith, seeing her smile more at the mention of her late mother, he felt his spirits lifted a touch; “You look more like her everyday, she’d be so proud.” He knew it was a bit cliché but he knew it was true, Lori would’ve loved Judith; said too many boys was a problem.

It was no secret that he’d been avoiding his father since they returned to Alexandria. Who could blame him after what had happened? It didn’t matter that they’d fixed the wound so he could live with it; he was still stuck dealing with yet another impairment.

The worst part was that it wasn’t the lack of a limb that upset him the most, it was what he’d had to go through just to make it happen and protect the others. He’d finished making his bed and sat down on it, leaning forward on to his elbow. What the hell was he supposed to do now?

The horrible things that had transpired in what Rick assumed had already been twenty-four hours, none of which they could have ever predicted would happen. Not after they had thought they’d taken care of the problem. Now they were ruined- a new player entering the field, his son being once again maimed for Rick’s own poor judgement, he tried so hard to give his son the best life he could get in a world so cruel. Even after all his attempts, they laid in vain. 

Entering Carl’s room, he knocked, barely able to look up from the floor; “Can I..come in?” Voice a low rumble, expression one twisted with guilt and sorrow. He lingered outside the doorway, trying to find any assortment of words that would help change the situation they were in now. But he couldn’t even begin to think of what would be helpful in the slightest.
