Because I feel like kids of color don’t hear it enough: domestic abuse is not a part of your culture. 

A lot of us were raised with the idea that “its normal for wives/children to get hit! it helps them learn– only white folk don’t get beaten when they misbehave”. That’s not true, white people aren’t the only ones who deserve a safe and abuse free environment. Black and brown people can and do have loving families. 

If you’re in a situation where you are enduring abuse and people use your culture to justify it, I want you to know that what they’re telling you are lies.

The idea that nonwhite cultures are somehow based on abuse is so prevalent that my mandatory reporting abuse seminar had an entire section in it about how this is bullshit and we shouldn’t ignore abused indigenous kids.

as someone who is also a mandated reporter & has been for a long time, just want to add nuance to @derinthescarletpescatarian ’s comment: while abuse absolutely should not be ignored when it comes to indigenous families, we also need to understand and grapple with the fact that indigenous families have a VERY different relationship to actual reporting/CPS than white families do.

White parents are privileged over others in that the system is far more forgiving of their abuse, & generally unlikely to act on reports in ways that contradict the parents’ wishes. Historically, indigenous parents have had this exact same system weaponized against them to remove indigenous children from indigenous homes & place them in white families (and, until very recently, boarding schools) for the sake of converting them to Christianity & white culture.

Which means both actual abuse is less likely to be acted on by the system when it comes to white parents, and less severe or outright false cases are more likely to be acted on by the system when it comes to indigenous families- and other BIPOC families as well. That nuance can’t be left out when navigating actual reporting situations without causing tremendous harm.
