i think some of the arguments that arise in the time that nicky takes care of the twins while they’re in high school stem from the fact that nicky probably didn’t have a phase of finding his parents insufferable like the twins are kind of going through. because some of the annoyance that the twins feel towards nicky likely can be traced back to the fact that he cares too much about them. but when nicky was their age, he would have done anything to get his parents to like him again. he changed for them, went to camp and church and tried to be their perfect christian son for them. even up to the events of the raven king, he wanted them to like him. so when the twins act out and roll their eyes at him and walk to school even when he wants to drop them off, nicky can’t relate to that feeling at all; he can only see it as rejection

Nicky was probably raised completely opposite to the twins. Luther being a preacher(I think) he would probably use the bible to set alot of rules. Some Christian households in the US use the a proverb spare the rod, spoilt the child as a reason to hit their children because its "teaching" them disapline. Conversion therapy and teenage behavioural also often have very strict rules as way to contol and use the bible as the reason for doing so. Nicky is used to that but knows its wrong. His only reference for parenting is incredibly authoritarian.
