Josh shrugs. âBe careful I guess. But I still trust your judgment.â

âI think the word youâre looking for is naive,â he supplies blankly. âWhat should I do about it, then?â
Josh shrugs. âBe careful I guess. But I still trust your judgment.â
arthur-gustin
Arthur leans back in his chair, closes his eyes, and rubs at his eyes with the heels of his hands tiredly. âOkay,â he sighs. âSorry.â
âI donât know anything about what you and Spencer do but if anyone would be tempted to manipulate someone for sex itâd be him and...â He huffs. âFrankly Arthur, I think youâd be a good target. Youâre way too trusting and... Optimistic. You-- Thereâs a word for it but I canât remember it.â
arthur-gustin
âSo anyone who wants something sexual from you is manipulating you?â he clarifies.
âNo. But sometimes people that want anything from you could be manipulating you. It just so happens that what youâre accusing Hatchman of is sexual.â
arthur-gustin
âWhat if you only feel that way about Dr. Hatchman because heâs manipulating you?â Arthur counters. âWhat if youâre manipulating me? How am I supposed to know?â
âWell me and Hatchman havenât done anything even close to sexual. Neither have we,â he notes. âIâve never asked anything of you, have I?â
arthur-gustin
âOh, okay. Well⌠Spencer doesnât take advantage of me,â he tells him. âMaybe he did when I first got here, but he doesnât anymore and I know he feels bad about doing it because weâve talked about it before. A lot. But heâs not now. Heâs nicer to me than I am to myself a lot of the time. And Jack? Yeah, he maybe took advantage of Jack a few times, too. But he knows that was bad too, and he knows not to do it anymore. I think. Spencerâs-. Heâs-. Heâs learned to do things a certain way to get what he needed, and I know itâs not an excuse, but now heâs learning how to not do that so I think we owe him some grace.â
âWhat if you only feel that way because youâre being manipulated?â Josh shrugs. âMost people are nice to me than I am myself, it doesnât make them nice people. Sometimes people do that on purpose even. Theyâre called predators.â
arthur-gustin
âI can tell you why youâre wrong about what, exactly?â
âAbout Spencer taking advantage of you and Jack and whoever else.â
jack-croft
Jack doesnât say anything for a while. His eyes had been fixed on Josh as he spoke, but they now flick back down to his lap, hoping that the lack of eye contact will make him feel less vulnerable. âI never want you to look at me and feel hurt.â He tells him. âI shouldnât have gotten involved with you when I needed to sort my shit out first.â
âI think we both might have expected too much from ourselves and each other.â
arthur-gustin
âAre you gonna quiz me about him to make yourself feel better or am I just supposed to defend him?â
âYou can tell me why Iâm wrong and I can decide if I believe you.â
jack-croft:
âHave you found closure, then?â
âIâm getting there,â he says. âWhen I get out of here, I wanna get as far away from this place as I can--â Literally and figuratively. â--but if I meet up with anyone I want it to be because we went through this together, not because we still have making up to do. I think we both deserve better than that. I donât wanna look at you and feel hurt anymore - now or then.â
jack-croft:
âYouâre right, it has been a long time. Things are going to be weird, we canât tip-toe around each other.â
âExactly. If anything, thatâd make it worse. Closure is important; Hatchman always told me that.â Heâs not wary of saying the manâs name anymore -- if he was conscious of it at all, heâd see it as a good sign.
jack-croft:
âI know, Iâm sorry.â He tries, genuinely, but doesnât offer any further explanation yet.
âNo, I didnât-- Iâm sorry. I wasnât implying anything.â
jack-croft:
âYeah. Not that itâs a bad thing.â He quickly adds.
âDidnât happen over night.â He shrugs. âTwo years is a long time.â
jack-croft
âGood point,â He notes. âyou didnât used to be like this.â
âWhat, so hopeful?â
jack-croft
He shrugs. âI guess itâs hard to imagine anything that isnât this. Donât you think?â
Josh hums, considering this. âI suppose I have to imagine it. Not sure Iâd cope if I didnât.â
jack-croft
âHuh,â He nods, trying to envision it. âI canât really see you with kids.â
âReally? Why?â
arthur-gustin
Arthur shrugs. âLetâs find out.â
He mimics his shrug and his tone. âOkay.â
