Through the famine and war that continues to plague Somalia, writer and musician KâNaan has found hope for the future. âThe truth about this place is, I always found that we have kind of stripped it out of context,â he says.
For the last six to ten months itâs been clear that there's a major problem in the Horn of Africa. In the Starved for Attention film âWhy Do We Have To Wait For A Crisis?â photojournalist Lynsey Addario documents the food crisis in Somalia and northeastern Kenya. Every child needs a good enough diet if they're gonna be able grow and thrive. It shouldnât take a war or famine to happen before they're given access to food.

Want a Free Copy of My Mixtape? Help Me Find The Beat For This Song!
I've been trying to find the instrumental version of this song for ages. I wanna use it for a track on my upcoming mixtape but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Anyone who can dig it up for me or even make a decent remake will get a free copy of my mixtape and my endless gratitude. Heck, I might even mention you on the track! Seriously, I really need this beat.
By the way, the song is called "Come Along" by Titiyo if you didn't know. Any help at all is appreciated.
The Real Obscenity: "The F-Word" (Not What You Think)
F*****! Obviously, it's not what you thought, but this new PSA drawing attention to the deadly drought and famine in Somalia will launch on the internet and TV sets all across the U.S., as well as localized versions in the U.K., France and Germany. The appeal is also accompanied by an online petition.
People featured in this fast-moving spot include politicians and entertainers such as ONE co-founder Bono of U2, Somali singer and poet Kânaan, and others like Mike Huckabee, Mayor Bloomberg and Arianna Huffington.
The spots were directed by Jesse Dylan, whose videos include the Emmy Award-winning "Yes We Can" Obama campaign video featuring will.i.am and several other artists. He hopes that this new PSA will help boost up interest in the Horn, since most of the media attention to the famine has been steadily decreasing over the past few weeks.

Not since the days of groups like Essex Court has a Windsor based, hip hop artist had a video featured on Much Music â eleven years, to be precise. But with any luck and some dedication, Fazon Taylor plans to change all of that. Also known as Rawzilla, Fazon will be leaving Windsor the day after tomorrow to meet with a Much Music program director and deliver a petition in hopes of bringing Windsor hip hop artists back on the air.
âYouâll see videos on Much Music from Halifax, Quebec, Vancouver, Toronto,â he notes, but when it comes to Windsor, there is no representation. Recently graduated from Film College in Toronto, Fazon will not only be bringing the petition, but a documentary he made as well titled Windsor Hip Hop Documentary on the history of hip hop in Windsor.
Though he will personally be representing himself and four other artists (Lye, Richy Nix, Jay Braaks, and Kayce Closed), Fazon was quick to explain that this is far from a personal endeavour. âIâm doing this on behalf of all the artists in the (Windsor) hip hop community,â he said. âI believe in the artists here, I believe they could go far with their music if we were given the opportunity that all the other artists across Canada are.â But before that can happen, he needs support.
Anyone who would like to voice their opinion to help get Windsor hip hop videos back on Much Music is asked to visit the Much Music Videos from Windsor Artists petition page on Facebook here. Supporters are asked to âAttendâ the event, and then leave comments and likes, as the page itself will be printed as the petition to be handed over. Those leaving comments are also asked to leave notes about any hip hop artists they would like seen on Much Music.

The SPLIFF Cypher â Important Update!
Hey what's good everybody? As you may already know, I've been hosting monthly cyphers on my channel since the beginning of July to help other artists get more exposure for their music. (You can check out this month's cypher here)
The plan was to post a new beat every month and make a shout out video giving props to whoever had the best entries. Since I have over 4,000 subscribers (and counting), I figured it was bound to get you guys some new fans.
Well, unfortunately, I ran into a few problems. Since I'm working on a mixtape right now, I barely have any time to promote the cyphers. At first, I didn't think it'd be a big deal cause a bunch of people already told me they were gonna hop on it.. but a lot of them either forgot or didn't even know the cypher started.
Since I can't possibly find the time to promote the cypher to each person individually (at least not until the mixtape's complete), each season's gonna last for two months rather than one. That way I can get more time to promote and you guys won't have to worry about being late. On top of that, we'll be able to reach a lot more people (aka get a lot more exposure for you), so it's a win-win!
The other problem is that YouTube keeps deleting people's entries, so I have no way of keeping track or even knowing if someone entered. Every time I check my videos, it seems like a couple of responses just disappear and I have no idea why. I'm gonna email YouTube later and ask them about it, but for now, I'd appreciate it if you guys can send me a message or leave a comment when you upload your responses. Thanks in advance
