This past weekend I heard this song at a party in DC and it gave me a kick in the butt to finish what I had started. In an effort to do more of what I love, I decided to pick it back up.
Its no secret. Lately I’ve been really into Wale. As a fellow Nigerian that grew up in the DMV, I was so pumped (and have had on repeat for weeks) when I heard his rendition of “My Sweetie” – a popular West African song. As I was listening to the lyrics, I started to recognize my own family and experiences as versions of what Wale is saying – literally all the best parts of our culture. It’s a shame that much of the perception of Nigeria is clouded by so much negative that is prevalent in the minds of many. Not very often are the positives shown; the vibrant, loving, welcoming, talented, colorful and unique culture.
