New York may not be hailed as the rock n’ roll capital of the world anymore (though, I would argue otherwise) but it still has some incredible voices and talents lurking in its dark alleys and smoky bars. One of my favorites, Lynette Williams, has just released part one of three music videos in a series shot by Alessio Romano. Now, before you start freaking out and groaning that this is going to be some crazy rock or blues epic or something (do blues epic even exist?) just hear me out.
Smooth and soulful, the highly simplistic music video features Lynette sitting and singing to the viewer, with shots of her in different poses mixed through out. Honestly, it’s one of my new favorite videos because it’s everything a music video shouldn’t be.
I promise, this will make sense in a minute.
It’s static. There are groupings of seconds when all we have is Lynette staring at us. It’s also minimalistic. In an age where more is better and the flashier and raunchier a video, the more attention it will get, this video stands out. It’s honestly like a cross between a gorgeous photograph and an equally beautiful video.
It’s the antithesis of what we define a music video as.
The song itself, though, is incredible. Just as smooth as the video, Lynette’s true instrument, her voice, really shines. The song cuts you to the core. The amount of emotion that she pores into each and every lyric is staggering, reflecting her passion for the music. The track is haunting and poignant, showing that simple lyrics and a whole lot of passion can create just as powerful a song as any melodramatic ballad.
Lynette has a voice that evokes old world nostalgia while still remaining relevant. In short, her music is timeless.
