Danny Brown's "Old" Available For Free Stream
By: Bill Murray
Detroit rapper, Danny Brown, recently released a stream of his new album, "Old," on Spotify. This highly anticipated album will be officially released on Fools Gold Records, October 8th, while Brown was digitally featured on the front page of Complex Magazine earlier today.
The 19-track album features appearances from Purity Ring, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q, A$AP Rocky, and more, along with production from Rustie, Dark Q Freaker, and A-Trak.
Rapping about anything from his favorite sandwich bread to watching a crack head light up his pipe, "Old," is an emblematic representation of the emerging nu-skool style of hip-hop. Reminiscent of rap’s freshest odd-balls such as Joey Badass and A$AP Rocky, this fresh new take on hip-hop rises up from the ranks of the many faceless trap-rap producers on the scene.
At 30 years-old Brown’s distinctive style emerges from a colorful array of dark and painful first hand experiences. Brown's life has been haunted by drugs being consumed and sold, creating a sense of depravity that evokes a new kind of heart pounding high.
"On, 'Torture,' I rap about seeing my uncle smoke rocks off a stove when I was 7... My whole family, one way or another, had something to do with drugs," said Brown in the Complex Magazine article.
Danny Brown is currently finishing up a tour with Action Bronson and Trash Talk, and will be back in New York on November 22nd at Terminal 5 with Sleigh Bells and Doldrums. Below is the official video for "Dip", a track off the new album.
Breaking Bad Finale Melts Hearts as well as Faces
By Chris Gironda
As a music blog we don't generally discuss movies and television, but today is an exception. With the closing moments of Breaking Bad last night, a collective tear of anticipation, excitement, happiness and sadness was shed as millions of viewers tuned in across the world to witness the Breaking Bad series finale Felina. In Vince Gilligan's final chapter of AMC's five season crime drama, Walter White manages to tie up all his loose ends, from exacting revenge to solidifying his children's trust fund.
Some disheartened fans wished for a more perilous end for Walter White, yet I think the series ended perfectly. I couldn't have asked for a better ending. While it would have been easy for any average viewer to "call" that Walt was going to die, the greater scope of Breaking Bad's finale still had me on the edge of my seat, heart racing, unsure what was actually going to happen and how exactly it was all going to go down.
The most interesting (and unpredictable) segment of Felina came in its last few moments: the stand off between Walt and Jesse. In possibly one of the most intense cinematic moments of my youthful twenty-two year old life, the dynamic duo was united again, both looking like absolute shit. Part of me wanted Jesse to kill Walt, just because of how fucking intense that would have been, but Vince Gilligan is smarter than all of us and it would have been completely against Jesse's character to do so. Jesse is the moral compass of the show and has always been, he murdered Todd simply because it was deserved and justified. Despite all of Walt's detestable actions, there was no justice in murdering a dying man, let alone his friend, his partner, his mentor.
The finale was perfection: Walt dies happily avenged, a chemist in his laboratory, while Jesse rides free into the night to carve some more wooden boxes (metaphorically, of course).
Cheers Vince Gilligan, Sundays won't be the same.
Tiësto Announces New Business Venture
By: Bill Murray
Beginning at raves in the mid-90s, Dutch DJ and Producer, Tiësto, has had one of the most impressive musical careers to date. In 1997 he founded his own label, Black Hole Recordings, and by 2002 managed to rank number one in Dj Magazine’s Top 100 Popularity Poll three separate times. Just after releasing his second studio album, Just Be, in 2004, Tiësto played live at the Athens Summer Olympics opening ceremony becoming the first DJ to ever play at the Olympics. Tiësto went on to release his third studio album, Elements of LIfe, in 2007, which landed on the Billboard Top Electronic Albums while nominating him for a grammy in 2008.
Tiësto has recently announced his next business venture, in which he has accepted a position as music advisor and producer for a brand new CBS drama set in Las Vegas. Alongside his 20 month residency in Hakkassan night club inside the MGM Grand, Tiësto stated that he finds it exciting that a television series is basing their entire sound repertoire off electronic dance music.
There is a lot of speculation towards the future of EDM, while the majority seem to believe that, “it's a bubble waiting to burst.” Tiësto’s new venture is undoubtedly an example of society’s current movement towards EDM, which says a lot for the future of this music. Is EDM a soon to be fading trend like disco in the 80s? Or has the digital age pushed it into the world for good?
