Driftwood

Lids twitch and flutter in salted agony,

Brilliant light blinds and burns the senses

As rainbow spots swim and dance before me.

Another damned day...

Swiftly, I draw the draperies to,

Not being able to bare the probing rays of sun trying to worm their way into my inky, sullen sanctuary.

The fluff of pillows beckons me back,

Whispering promises of peace,

The type of peace that only death and sleep have to offer.

Sinking in, I feel the velvety caress of blankets evelope my being, tugging me deeper into that world between sleep and wake.

My asylum of thought luls me with tragic tales of past transgressions. 

I drift,

Pitching and rolling in the morose gloom of self loathing regret. 

The undertow of emotions drag me further out,

Out into the manic whirling surge. 

Waves of anxiety and fear wash over me, threatening to violently drown me.

My insides churn and twist uncomfortably.

I thrash about the sea of blankets.

They twist and bind like tentacles groping my flesh.

Finally, the storm subsides.

I’m floating now.

The current carries me back,

Back Into that coma like dreamscape.

Peace has come,

At least for a while
