This is not my first time that I going through hardship and there are things that I learned during the good and bad times in life that helped me strengthen my resilience.
Resilience is the ability to adapt to difficult situations.
Resilience is a skill that is not build overnight. I am not sure if there is a way to teach resilience when there is no hardship. Experiencing hardship usually shows us how we currently face the world. There is a lot of things we can learn from the situation.
Here are some skills that helped me through a difficult period. There is no particular order to follow.
Not everyone you speak is suitable for all of your needs. There are people who can support you emotionally. Others might have some ideas how to get you out of the situation. Seeking help is a great way to get grip of the situation. Those who you can reach out can be family, friends or support groups.
2. Problem solving and plan ahead
When facing hardship, the future might looks fearfull. Identify where the problems lies. Emotional regulation and reaching out for help might be good ways to lessen the friction of creating a solution for your problems. Look at the things that brings you misery. Create small steps that brings you out of it. Be realistic and look at the areas where you lack support and how to obtain what you need.
Self-care is about physical needs and emotional needs. Stay in touch with yourself. Be kind to yourself by taking time to do activities you enjoy. Get a routine, take care of your sleep and diet. Meeting your emotional needs is a huge topic, which requires emotional regulation.
4. Staying in the present moment
The past brings sadness and the future gives you uncertainty. The best moment is the present moment where you can take action of your situation. Whenever you notice that you are dwelling on the past or future, try to shift your focus back to the real time. Meditation is a way how to practice this shift of perspective.
6. Positive reinforcement
Reward yourself for hard work. Positive reinforcement goes hand in hand with self-care. Giving yourself a positive feeling after a hard task boosts self-confidence, self-approval and self-esteem. This teaches you to appreciate yourself. There is no need to rely on approval of others.
Learning any of these skills takes time and practice.
