Featuring: Thomas Meier & Celeste Barbosa-Meier with mentions of Shay & Sasha Meier, Frankie King & August Atwood Time Frame: Early August Location: The new Meier home; San Francisco, CA Notes: Celeste and Thomas make an important decision while unpacking in their new home @thomas-meier
Celeste softly snorted, "Why can I see you pulling out some kind of bag of actual green flags in that moment?" She laughed and shook her head at the thought, and then grinned at the examples Thomas gave of things they had to deal with when dining out with the girls, or even when it was meal time at home. There was no question that she and Thomas loved their little girls but having this time to themselves was so precious. "I'm glad we have plenty of people to help and support us in the meantime with our family and close friends." When Thomas pointed out how things had played out for them, her brows raised a bit. "You're right. I think it was a fleeting thought for me before, but we didn't really date outside of the show. And that was a wild experience that I don't regret in the least, but I'd love for us to get to date-date." Smiling all over again, Celeste reached for her lemonade glass again and raised it, "A toast. To finding a new home we want, and to dating my husband again."
Thomas laughed. "Because that's the kind of dad jokes I obviously bring to the table," he grinned. God, he loved his wife. He loved making her laugh and smile. He was glad he was still able to do that after their whirlwind romance, fast marriage, and after more than a year of being parents. "It really is a blessing," he nodded. "No, we didn't. I miss it - dating you. The island was a wild thing to experience, but I would do it all over again because it brought you and the girls into my life." Thomas picked up his own glass and raised it to his gorgeous wife. "To us dating and finding a perfect home for our family," he nodded and took a sip before he took her hand and brought it to his lips to kiss her knuckles. "I'll woo the crap out of you all over again," he promised.
"I do know," Celeste affirmed after their kiss. "You get a lifetime supply of green flags, babe," she told him with a grin. He was the very best father and she loved him deeply and was grateful to be his partner in parenthood and in life.
"It really is. It's also weird to be sitting at a table with no high-chairs or kids' menus." They were both home often with their girls and it was a huge blessing, but Celeste agreed with Thomas about it being easier for them to find child care as the girls got older. "Absolutely. I think with the girls not really being able to articulate too much yet, I'd still rather it be someone we know and trust to watch the girls, but when they're a little older and can tell us things, like if something happened or they were mistreated while we were away, then I'd feel better about a sitter who wasn't family or friends." Reaching for her lemonade to take a sip, Celeste thought about dates in the future for Thomas and herself. "We should plan to go to the movies sometime. Or see if there will be those outdoor movies in the park over the summer. Maybe we can look into going wine tasting or something sometime too."
“I’ll make sure I remind you of all my green flags any time we get into an argument,” Thomas teased. It didn’t happen often, which he was grateful for. Especially after his marriage to Jordan.
“Oh yes! No crayons. No sippy cups being pushed off the table to the floor,” he laughed. There were few things he loved more than being a dad, but it had its frustrating parts, too. “I agree with you completely. It is so important to me that we leave them with people we trust. And we will be able to trust strangers more when the girls have a larger vocabulary.” He smiled at the idea of more dates with Celeste. “You know I’m down for all of that. When we came home from the island, we didn’t get to go on date nights like that. You were already pregnant. We dove headfirst into wedding planning. It’s funny, now that we already have kids and are married, we will be able to go out on dates.” Their island dates were incredible, but were planned out for them for the most part.
Cheers to that! I definitely need those tips, man. Yeah, I'm not ready for any of that yet. What's been your favorite part so far?
I don’t think anyone is ready for it! I think my favourite part is seeing how much they love each other, along with Celeste and myself. Even before they could say love. Or mama or dada. It’s remarkable, really. I also love seeing them develop their own personalities and senses of being. They have so much in common, but they are also so different.
"Yes, exactly!" Celeste agreed regarding them not losing out on a house that would be good for them and their family. She chuckled a little at the 'lipstick on a pig' comment from Thomas and raised her water glass, "Cheers to us then! Here's to hoping we get the home we want. And thank you, babe, for putting an offer in for our family." She half-stood and leaned over so that she could peck him on the lips, and then sat back down, taking a sip of her water.
"Same here. It's almost weird to actually get to look through the menu this time." Celeste grinned sweetly at her husband and reached over to squeeze his hand. "I know. We'll have to work on that. Maybe carve out some regular 'us' time when we move?"
Thomas grinned and raised his glass with his wife. He stood up to meet her halfway to kiss her. “You know I would do anything for our family. You and our kids are my whole world,” he grinned.
“Right? So weird to be able to pick something I actually want.” He held Celeste’s hand across the table. “We should work on it, you’re right. Especially as the girls get older. It is easier to find them a sitter, even when they’re not our friends and family,” he said. “We deserve date nights.”
I thought having one teenager was hard with Frankie! I am just lucky Sasha and Shay won't be teens for a long, long time. How are you dealing with it all?
Right now, I'm pretty okay. Winter is focusing a lot on looking for colleges online so we can do tours in the Spring. She still hates like 79% of the world but she's been pretty helpful around the house. Henry hasn't exhibited any teen angst YET but I know it's coming lol. Enjoy them while they're little!! That's what I say about Phoebe but I feel like she'll be a teenager when she's three lol a Threenager.
I remember doing college tours with Frankie! Is Winter excited about it? Are you encouraging her to look both near and far? Honestly, what teen doesn’t hate that much of the world? I hope Henry doesn’t get too angsty. Maybe Phoebe will be more angsty than him.
Being a dad is already the best job I've ever had. Hands down. Am I sleeping? No. Have I seen my bed for more than 10 minutes at a time? Absolutely not. Do I know what day it is? nope. Do I remember why I came on here? Nah. Wait, why am I here?
Welcome to Fatherhood! It's the best, most exhausting, joyful, frustrating, fun job in the world! If you need some tips on having twins, I'm here for you, man. Just enjoy it, though. Because you blink and suddenly they can walk and talk.
I can't believe school starts in a month. If I were these kids, I'd be hard-pressed to fight this. Didn't school JUST end? Why does everything feel like a fever dream? Did June even happen? I have a 13-year-old now. Thirteen. Two teenagers and a baby. It's like the plot of a movie. Before we know it, it'll be 2025 and I'll be crying into my champagne.
I thought having one teenager was hard with Frankie! I am just lucky Sasha and Shay won't be teens for a long, long time. How are you dealing with it all?
"Oh I bet that you've heard a couple of the singles from the album. "Candyman" and "Ain't No Other Man" were really popular songs when the album came out so I imagine you might have heard it in the grocery store or on the radio or something like that." They chuckled a bit with Thomas, replying, "No, I didn't assume that at all. I didn't really pick a side between them because I've liked dancing around to both of their songs."
They agreed completely with Thomas about having photo prints. "Yes, that's the best! There's such great memories with family photos. There are some around the house that my siblings and I share, and even the pictures of Atlas, Nova and our nieces and nephews back home are so special, seeing how much they've all been growing."
After an amusing set of photos taken, Juniper returned their props and looked over the pictures with Thomas. "I can't wait to add these to my scrapbook! This was so much fun, Thomas."
"Those sound vaguely familiar, but I'm honestly so bad with song titles even when they're on my playlist." Thomas laughed. He was sure if he heard them he would recognize them. "Right? They both have good songs to dance to. Especially in gay bars." He hadn't been to one in years. He momentarily wondered if he was too old for them.
Thomas smiled when Juni described all the family photos around their house. It was something he wanted, too. "I love that. Everyone deserves a place on the wall," he grinned.
He helped Juni put the props back in their proper place so somebody else could use them. "They're hilarious! I can't wait to show Celeste. And then show the girls their dad can still have fun," he chuckled. "Thank you for taking the pictures with me," he said and gave Juni a hug. "It's always a good time."
Celeste smiled at the fried zucchini order that Thomas put in, already looking forward to it as an appetizer. After sharing her thoughts with the houses, Celeste listened to her husband while opening her menu. She had her eyes on his blue pair and nodded when he agreed about the money to put into the house, as well as the concerns with the backyard setup.
When she did glance down at the menu to see if there was something different that she wanted to try, Celeste heard Thomas's question about putting an offer on a house today. She thought about this for a moment, sucking in her bottom lip and pushing it back out repeatedly before saying, "My first thought was for us to sleep on it but I feel like we both have thought this out really well ad we know what we want. Since we have a top two, I think that we would be okay to put an offer in today on the first house and hopefully increase our chances of getting it. If we lose out on it, then we can pursue the fourth house." After another beat, she said, "I think it would be a good idea to get a pre-offer inspection though. The homes look amazing when walking through but I would feel better to just make absolutely sure that we don't get surprised by anything that might be hidden."
Their drinks were brought to them with a promise of the fried zucchini coming soon. The waiter then asked if they were ready to order. Celeste admitted with a polite smile that she wasn't ready yet and the waiter encouraged them both to take their time before walking away.
Thomas watched as his wife sucked on her lip repeatedly, grinning a little at the movement. "That was my first thought, too. To sleep on it, but you're right. We don't want to lose out on the house if it's good for us and our girls." He agreed that they could always try to buy the other house if this one fell through. "I'll have our realtor reach out to an inspector to check out the property. If everything is all good, and they didn't just put lipstick on a pig, I'd be happy to buy it." Thomas was genuinely excited about this next step in their lives together. Marriage, children, a new home... it all added up to more joy with Celeste.
He was apologetic when the waiter asked if they were ready to order. Thomas had hardly glanced at the menu. "I'm so used to just picking the first good thing and focusing on the girls when we go out," he laughed. "We haven't been on a mum-and-dad-only lunch in a while. So even though we're talking about houses, this is actually very nice."
"You're so bad at that!" Frankie chuckled and hooked their arm into Thomas' arm, sticking close to him as if she were a tween again. "It was literally fire engine red, Dad!" They were so happy to be enjoying this evening with family and friends. Frankie realized how important this celebration truly was. Frankie listened to Thomas' words and smiled, knowing that he had met with August prior to the wedding. "Thanks, Dad. It's really easy knowing what to say or do watching you and Celeste. And even before all that island stuff, you really instilled some great values in me and taught me about loving gran and papa and not taking them for granted." She wrapped their arms around Thomas. "I'm glad we got to do this."
Thomas let out a hearty laugh. "I know! That's what makes it worse," he said and patted Frankie's arm, grinning down at them. "Better than watching Jordan and I, right?" he winced a little. Though he supposed that would show Frankie what not to do in a relationship. "That's probably the biggest compliment I can get as a dad. I'm glad I've been able to teach you something good." Thomas hugged his child back tightly. "I'm glad we did, too. I love you so much, Frankie. You're an amazing person, and you deserve all the love in the world."
I'll say. I feel like I've been gradually becoming more of a clean freak since becoming a parent. Teaching Cannon to sneeze into his elbow's been...interesting.
That's a good point, and it probably makes for a nice reunion to have all of you together when you come to visit.
We will definitely teach the girls that when they're old enough to understand. Though they do know they have to wash their hands after using the toilet, at least.
It's very nice. We usually have a big dinner at a restaurant.
"Yes, it really makes for this wedding theme being so fun!" Juniper agreed. "I think that's a big reason why Christina Aguilera's Back to Basics album is one of my favorites, as well as the music videos she made from that album." Nodding she said, "Mine too! I need to update a few of my scrapbooks with some new pages from the past handful of months of events." And when Thomas picked up the lips prop, Juniper laughed, "That's a great one. Let's see..." They looked over the remaining options and then picked up one of a black fedora, and a second one of a conversation bubble that said, 'A roaring good time'. "Okay, let's do this! We can stand back-to-back?" They suggested, holding the hat over their forehead and the conversation bubble between them and Thomas.
“I couldn’t tell you if I remember that album. I’m sure if I heard some of it, I’d recognize it. I may have been married to a man before, but I wasn’t one of those queer guys who cared about the Christina versus Britney beef,” Thomas laughed.
“Physical pictures are great. Celeste and I have some frames around the house with pictures of our wedding and of the girls.” They’d get even more put up once they moved to a bigger house.
Thomas laughed at the fedora and the word bubble Juni picked up. “I love those! Yes, back-to-back.” They took a few pictures, changing poses, before two copies were printed. “Oh, these are amazing and hilarious!”
Yeah that's true. It sucks when Cannon's brought home a cold or something but it is helpful that 1 or both of us is usually available to pick him up or be home with him until he's better. That makes sense though, about staying in the states. And it's good your parents are good to make visits and all that. All of your sisters live in Canada too, right?
Kids are germ factories. It’s pretty impressive actually 😂
Yes, my immediate family is all in Canada. Makes it easy to visit them all in one trip, though.
"Absolutely. It should be great for us for a while but down the road, we can change it up." It looked like the sellers had freshly painted the home and if Thomas liked the colors and accent walls, she was also happy with leaving them as they were for the coming years, were they to get the house.
She listened to her husband while he parked and on the way inside of the restaurant, nodding in agreement with his observations and pluses on the fourth home they'd visited. She had think back a bit about the specific cupboard space he was referring to but liked hearing his idea of some upgrades to the home. And after they were seated at a table, she took in all of his upsides to the fourth home.
A waiter came by to greet them and take their drink orders. After asking for the lemonade as well as a glass of ice water, Celeste waited for Thomas to place his order before sharing her likes and dislikes of the home. "Okay, so I like a lot of the same things that you did, with tall ceilings and all of the natural light and windows. I also like that there's a bit of a view to the second floor from the living room on the first floor. I liked that there were six bedrooms which, I think was the most from all of the homes we looked at. It'd give us maybe two guest rooms, orr if you wanted a room like a dad cave or if we wanted a home gym or something like that. Or maybe even a play room for the girls without giving up gust space."
Celeste glanced down at her notepad and then said, "As for what I dislike about it, I wasa little disappointed with the kitchen. It felt like it left something to be desired. And maybe the island is that something, but..." Her face scrunched, "I don't know. I didn't like the tile floors in it but that could be redone too if w wanted. And the backyard makes me nervous because of all the telephone poles to the far back. I know that there were some fencing poles that split the neighboring home, but I didn't see anything for the back where those poles were. I worry about the girls for that, and it looks like it drops off a lot beyond that. From what my parents have told me, fencing is definitely not cheap. And I know we could make these renovations but all of it together seems like it's going to add up pretty quickly."
Thomas ordered his own drinks, following Celeste’s lead with the lemonade and water. He also put in an order of the fried zucchini for them to split. He listened to what Celeste liked and didn’t like about the fourth house. “It does seem like if we buy the fourth one we will be putting a lot of money into it right away. I’m not opposed to that, of course, but if we can just start living in a house with as few changes as possible off the bat, that would be much easier for our family.
“You’re also right about the telephone poles. The girls get very curious, and we would have to be really mindful of them any time we are in the backyard.” There was a lot to think about, but the more they talked, the more he thought about the first house being perfect for them. It didn’t have as many rooms, but the girls shared for now anyway.
“Would you want to put an offer down on a house today if we figure out the one we love?” Things were already well situated with their current house. They would be able to move out fairly quickly.
"And that's why I went for the big chop. I think it looks cute. Bold move days before the wedding but I figured I'd surprise you all." Frankie fluffed their hair with a giant smile. "Are you having fun? Did you hear Aug's vows? I cried so hard."
“You should be proud of your old man for noticing it was shorter. I remember when you dyed it in high school and I didn’t notice for about a week,” Thomas laughed at himself. “It looks very nice at any length, Franks. Of course I’m having fun! I got to walk you down the aisle. This was going to be one of the best days of my life regardless. I did hear their vows, and I’m going to hold them to them.” Thomas put his best Stern Dad face on. “Your vows were very moving, too. I’m so proud of you. It makes me so happy you’ve found someone who clearly loves you as much as you love them.” Thomas hugged his child tight. This wedding brought him closure in a sense. Before, he couldn’t wrap his mind around the fact Frankie was married. Seeing all of this and being part of the ceremony made him realize the young person he helped raise was a real grownup.
