Tonight Alive - "Come Home"
Tonight Alive is a very solid punk/pop band with a tight sound. They're a young band, though, and like many punk-influenced bands there can be a tendency for their songs to sound very similar - similar drum rhythms, similar vocal style, similar tonality. The song I posted previously "Breaking and Entering" highlights just how well their usual sound works. "Come Home," however, has a sweeter, more pop sound in all aspects. I think it shows that this band has real potential for the long haul, and I'm looking forward to seeing the direction they take as they continue to mature musically.
Repetitive Country Music in 2013
When Entertainment Weekly writer Grady Smith wrote a list of his favorite country albums for 2013, readers complained that there weren't enough mainstream artists on the list. Grady's response was this video, which pointedly asserts that mainstream country in 2013 tended to be tired, repetitive, and filled with a common set of cliches. Comments to Grady's video tended along the lines of "Yeah, but... other genres of music do it too!" Which just means that we, as listeners, have been trained to accept the record labels' tried and true formulas. Which is one of the reasons I look for independent and alternative musicians, I suppose...
The worst part is, many of the songs themselves are musically well executed, and fun to listen to. But the collection of all of them together gets, well, boring. I may not be the target demographic, though. I have never owned a pickup truck - though I did own a 4-wheel drive once. Does that count?
Most romantic poem ever...
Muffin Films.
Tale of a doomed invasion. Here is a video from a site all about muffins. I would never have thought this could be a thing.
Tonight Alive - "Breaking and Entering"
A little punk, a little alternative, great drum sequences, and interesting lyrical composition. More fun to listen to than expected. A new regular on the playlist. Soon, maybe enough time to make complete sentences.
How to survive the robopocalypse.
Ok. I expected something very tongue-in-cheek, and the visuals for this video certainly match that description. However, the robotics expert providing the discussion on surviving the robot uprising is giving logical, cogent answers to questions without any perceptible sense of irony. The dichotomy is wicked funny, and you might learn something useful, like "use a long stick to press the robot's kill switch," and other sage wisdom. And I thought all I had to plan for was zombies; evidently you use very different strategies to deal with robots than you do with zombies. The go-to weapon is apparently a camera flash rather than a machete. Darn it. I can use a machete, but I'm rubbish at taking pictures... Go zombies!
Do you find yourself a mystery? Wonder what makes you tick? Well, this site won't help with that. It will, however, give you some feedback on what your tendencies and preferences are. Most interesting if you can get your friends to take and share their personality tests; this can be a great insight into how your differences can complement each other.
Ronald Jenkees - "Guitar Sound"
This Youtube artist is a keyboard instrumentalist, and he's fantastic. He clearly has a ball doing his thing in his home studio, and he produces some of the most interesting contemporary instrumental music I've heard lately. This is probably one of my favorite pieces, with a clearly recognizable melodic theme explored throughout from different harmonic angles. I imagine that this is what Luke had running through his head as he made that final run down the channel of the Death Star. Ronald even ends the song with a little reverberating "ping" - which is perfect for the sound of the shot going down the thermal exhaust.. OK, maybe I'm nuts, but you listen and see if it doesn't fit.
Hey Ocean! - "Big blue wave"
This is an interesting semi-pop alternative track; a well produced and glittering piece of feel-good. It's not particularly deep, regardless of the song's title, but it's fun. The instrumentals and vocals are relatively straightforward, which shows a nice restraint. They didn't spoil the song's simple clean lines with a lot of musical flourishes, which is a mistake a lot of contemporary bands are making. The lighthearted video is a perfect complement to the song. It's cotton candy rather than dark chocolate, but sometimes that sweet, light-as-air, melt-on-your-tongue taste is just perfect. Great... Now I'm hungry for dessert...
Dance In A Year
This young lady embarks on a year-long effort to learn to dance, without any instruction other than videos on You-tube. She documents her progress and describes her journey, and the approaches she used to track and focus on her project. While the site is particularly about dancing, she makes the point that the approach she used could be used to learn almost anything. It's an inspiring and impressive effort, and the video above is well worth a watch to see how her skills progressed over the year. Maybe I can use this approach to study.... something. I should know how to do something by now, surely?
MY GOD.
THIS SONG HAD BEEN COVERED BY ED SHEERAN. JOHNNY CASH, JACK WHITE AND LIKE EVERYBODY BUT NO ONE DOES IT LIKE THIS KID WITH AN IPHONE.
YOU NEED THIS. MY. GOD.
woah.
What a great piece of performance art
Adelitas Way, "Alive"
Love this video. This song has a great sound, and a really positive "love song" message. The video hearkens back to the heyday of music videos, and tells a great story. In 4 minutes, they tell a whole story, with pathos, humor, love, and triumph. I love her smirk at the end... She's all like, "Yeah, I did that, suckers...."
GOING TO ANOTHER WORLD THROUGH AN ELEVATOR (+ some tips on how to return)
Find a 10+ story building and go in the elevator alone.
While on the elevator, press 4.
When you reach the 4th floor, press 2.
When you reach 2nd floor, press 6.
When you reach 6th floor, press 2.
When you reach 2nd floor, press 10.
When you reach 10th floor, press 5.
When you reach the 5th floor, a girl will come in. That girl is not human. Don’t talk or look at her.
Press 1 - but if the elevator starts going up to the 10th floor instead, then you have succeeded. You have reached another world where there is no one except you.
If you get off at the 10th floor, the girl will ask, “Where are you going?” But don’t answer her.
How to return to the real world:
If the girl doesn’t get on the 5th floor.
If you don’t get off at the 10th floor.
If you don’t get off at the 10th floor, then press 1. If it doesn’t work, keep on pressing until it does.
How to return if you get off:
You must use the same elevator to go back.
Do the 4-2-6-2-10-5 combo again.
After you reach the 5th floor, press 1.
As you’re going up to the 10th floor, press some other number to cancel.
After you reach the 1st floor, check your surroundings.
Also, if you were to faint in the process while trying to go back and wake up to find yourself in your own house, there’s a high possibility that you’ll be taken back to the other world again.
What the other world looks like:
The surroundings look the same - but all the lights are off and you can only see a red cross in the distance.
There are no signs of the living there except yourself.
Some say electronics (cellphone, camera, etc.) don’t work.
Some say that getting back to the real world is difficult for some reason. You get disorientated and forget the elevator you came on or somehow, the elevator seems to get further and further away as you walk towards it.
I really want to try this...
Flyleaf, "Call You Out"
Here's a little harder bit of alternative. Wailing guitar, pounding base, angry vocalist - this is one of those songs that make it hard to sit still. The song sounds like it's about a bad breakup, but the video is like some Native American myth, with a rampaging bear, a heroic wolf, a watchful raven and his entire unkindness (flock of ravens, for those not familiar). And if the ending is a bit Wyle E. Coyote, well, that's mythic too. I do like the expression on the bear's face at the end. That's the exact way I look when I realize that one of my kids has eaten the last chocolate chip cookie...
Wow. This is much more complicated than I ever knew. Be careful when calling shotgun, you don't want to be voided - which to my surprise has nothing to do with bowels. Also, be wary of the embarrassing "balk", a rookie move which can lose you all opportunity to sit in the coveted shotgun seat, even if you won the call. Shotgun is apparently serious business, including certain duties and obligations not conveyed on the back-seat passengers. Study up, and be prepared. Guide your friends into the deep mysteries of being the first among the people who are not actually driving.
Courage My Love - "Bridges"
This awesome Canadian pop-punk band is polished well beyond their independent roots and relative youth. The lyrics are pointed and powerful, the sound is tight and surprisingly full for a three-piece. Unlike a lot of alternative music, the band tends to focus on positive or inspiring messages, I love the lyric "if you turn your back, I'll burn that bridge."
I'm a little puzzled by the football game symbolism in this video, but they sure looked like they were having fun. Reminds me of that old Dire Straits classic, "Money for Nothing." It's a hard life, loving what you do...
