Now don’t be unfair, Robbie. I’m plenty good at giving gifts to people who appreciate them.

“Not a whole lot of them to talk to,” she shrugged.

“You know, you, me and Raymond should do some sort of ‘we don’t have family so we should be our own family’ thing.” Thomas grinned.

“Yeah, and another Hanukkah with Raymond,” she breathed out. Raymond was often a big proponent of the the idea you should spend holidays with family.

“Talking to your extended family must be wonderful, huh?” Thomas forced out a smile.

“Well, another Christmas where I feel no burden to buy gifts.”

“Oh no, I just love it when someone doesn’t pay me for a full day of work. It’s really great.”

“Who do I need to fight?”

“Always a funny one, Catherine. Shouldn’t you be begging the Palmers for scraps?”

“Then parties have certainly changed for the worse around LA lately.”

“Lady, you look nice and I don’t want to be rude, but what are you doing here?”

“Yeah. Seat’s free. Drinks aren’t.”

“Yes, so if you would not mind, could I have those matches back?”

“Oh. Right.” Reluctantly, he handed them back.

“Unfortunate…” he responded, though there was little sympathy in his voice.

Thomas forced a smile. “Very unfortunate. Pity when people steal, isn’t it?”

Thomas nodded. A foreign name, but he couldn’t place from where. “Lent mine to one of the boys at the dock. He needed it to keep some rope from unwinding and he never gave it back.”

“Come now, Sam. You know I’m goddamn hilarious.”

“No, Sam. To blow up this town with. Yeah, to smoke with.”

Though he didn’t want the man smoking next to him, he relented anyway, pulling out a set he’d grabbed from the last bar he’d been in, “Here… though, no, I do not carry them with me often.”

Thomas gave the other man a brief, grateful smile. “Thanks. Thomas, by the way.”
