I feel so insane about ai. I've had face-to-face conversations with people who use it for therapy, who use it to calculate the safety of pill interactions, who use it for all their emails and grant applications and legal documents and academic papers and finance sheets and for every single question they have about the world, and if you tell them about the ecological costs they just laugh and say "I guess I've used a lot of water." and I've been in multiple gatherings of 10+ people where I'm THE ONLY PERSON who doesn't use chatgpt. it's turning me into a ranting raving pariah, because how don't you people see??? why don't you understand??????? this bullshit didn't exist five years ago, you absolutely do not need it, and it is destroying everything

Ants are a fun way to look at cosmic horror, because they make complex decisions plus the whole eusocial thing, but most ants weight 1-5 milligrams, is the thing, and the human brain at a couple pounds or so is like without exaggeration a million times heavier than a whole ant. Imagine just... a brain, a whole brain that's a Boeing 747. But if you step back further, human lungs and circulatory system are so alien to most small arthropods. Pushing blood around in tubes would sound demented. Communicating by sound predominantly without pheremones, it would be cacaphonously loud to an ant, our scents would seem like babbling madness. The whole relatively isolated condition of human life must seem like the void is staring back, a being completely unable to see or comprehend the sights and language of insects that holds the power to destroy them all effortlessly. The vastness and total blankness of humanity to the insect is a cosmic horror to me.

My other hot take I think I’ve said already but I’ll say it again bc the discourse is circulating again- I think the fear-mongering about “cozy” books and games is one of the biggest non-issues I’ve ever seen and to be honest feels like people really taking the “finding a bullshit moral reason to justify not liking something”

I dont engage with a lot of “cozy” media but i don’t think those who do are “looking away” from the grim reality of exploitation in society or whatever. media consumption is not praxis

Plus, plenty of people engage in that media to escape from ongoing abuse or the lingering trauma from abuse. I don't need anyone to read hard-core nonfiction / fiction if it hurts them more.

FFS no one can engage in The Horrors 24/7 and not lose themselves and anyone judging people solely on escapism is succumbing to The Horrors because it's a sign that they are losing empathy and compassion.

If you are not a part of a particular minority (queer, black, female, poor, etc.), then you likely have internalized biases against them inherited from society. This is not your fault! This is the fault of society. However, it is your duty to recognize these biases, minimize the harm they cause, and listen to the people who are affected by these biases.

Yes, no one is immune to the -isms and -phobias inherent in society, even those who are harmed by it! Some people underestimate just how ingrained in society these biases truly are, to the point that people will subconsciously act in opposition to their own well-being.
