Found with the rest of the hoard, the handaxe pictured above was probably found either while digging his own hole for the treasure or maybe earlier in a precious bout of hoarding by some Romano-Briton who thought it was cool enough to bury along with all of his coins and Juliane's bracelet, because cool rock. This was absolutely the correct move.

Gold Hinged Makara Bangle,

South India or Goa, 19th century

This fine, two-part, hinged bracelet is of high-grade gold sheet over a lac core. It is in the form of two dragon-like makaras. Four inlaid red stones comprise the pairs of eyes for each makara. Gold bracelets with makara terminals are known in India but this example is more unusual than most. Its texture and spikiness, particularly the small horns or spikes on the crests of the makara’s heads are an unusual and striking feature.

The unusual nature of this piece might suggest that it does not come from Madras in South India, as most are thought to have come, but from Goa.

The screwing mechanism that holds the two halves of the bracelet together does so firmly.

Today's Exhibit of the Day is a blast from the past! This archival image, snapped in 1938, depicts Museum preparators sculpting a model Triceratops. This large herbivore could reach lengths of 28 ft (8.5 m). The model pictured here isn't on display today, but Triceratops fans can spot a fossil skeleton in the Hall of Ornithischian Dinosaurs.

India's refugee policies were in fact urgently based around denying Rohingya fleeing from the Junta asylum.

We have learnt that they were flown from Delhi to an island in the Bay of Bengal, put on a naval vessel and eventually forced into the Andaman Sea with life jackets. They then made their way to shore and are now facing an uncertain future in Myanmar, which the mostly-Muslim Rohingya community had fled in huge numbers in recent years to escape persecution.

"They bound our hands, covered our faces and brought us like captives [on to the boat]. Then they threw us in the sea," John, one of the men in the group, told his brother by phone soon after reaching land.

Medieval scribes writing things like “fuck the abbot” (their boss) and “I am so hung over I feel dead” and “that goddamn cat got in here and pissed on the manuscript” and drawing penis monsters and purposefully unflattering portraits of public figures and animals in the marginalia is funny, yes. But more than that it is so deeply quintessentially human. It reminds you that they were largely just frustrated young adults who did an extremely repetitive and tedious job 6 days a week during daylight hours in poor conditions and felt the same malaise young adults feel now.

NB those pointing fingers, drawing attention to a pee-stain and an Irritated Clerk Comment about what happened one night in about 1420:

We once had to bury a book in baking soda for about a week because of a similar incident. 600 years difference, and no difference; cats will do what they do... :->
