i think this person is making a valid point specifically in the context of people giving half-assed apologies in a situation where a genuine apology is clearly warranted, so my purpose in saying this is not to argue against them or say they're wrong here but to use what they're saying as a jumping-off point.
but hot take: "i'm sorry if you interpreted it that way" is a perfectly valid thing to say in certain contexts (obviously i am not talking about microaggressions and the like). people bring their own experiences and subjective perception of the world into everything they write and read and sometimes the burden of misinterpretation does in fact rest on the person doing the interpreting! i don't think people should be on the hook for every way someone could possibly interpret what they say in every context, even if those interpretations are occurring in good faith.
Be so fucking proud of yourself for passing the hardest moments alone while everyone believed you were fine.
