I think about this line all the time. The main implication I read here is that it's saying Dean seeks out (consciously or not) relationships where he can be/has to be a martyr. The language used is evocative if not clear, and says that his relationships = a self-serving endeavour, someplace on the way to somewhere else — whether that's his intention or not. The use of "sainthood" strikes me also just because of the imagery, and iirc I can probably count on one hand the references the show makes to saints. You could also read that it's saying anyone he has a relationship with would be undertaking something requiring divine influence to survive (which is... fair), but I feel like the first one is closer to what was intended to be interpretated and how the line was delivered. The question of whether any of this is even true/accurate to his character is always debatable, but regardless, what a line.
