So by all accounts, the MTV VMAs were kind of a trainwreck this year. Miley Cyrus was a racist mess. The Biebs cried. Kanye announced he’s heading for a presidential campaign (which, quite frankly, I’d love to see). As an Australian citizen without MTV (and with a lot of uni work on her plate), I didn’t get to watch the immediate action. I did, however, catch the fallout and excitement that followed what has got to be one of the best adlibs I’ve ever seen on the screen. Thank you speedy tumblr users for live blogging this highlight:

And back to… this bitch that had a lot to say about me the other day in the press. Miley, what’s good?

Nicki Minaj’s call out was succinct, punchy, and effective. I rewatched the vids posted online of Minaj over and over and over, cackling with my younger sister.

“What’s good?” was such a great choice of words. Calling out cultural appropriation and Cyrus’s white feminism, Minaj’s words quite literally point to the music industry’s consistent prioritisation of white voices when it comes to constructing popular taste and success. An otherwise colloquial phrase, “what’s good?” becomes a questioning of a privileged white person; Miley, what’s good? Because whatever your whiteness and your upper-classness says goes.

Cyrus can chant how much she loves nipples and pot and choice all she wants. That’s great. Nipples and choice are important things to consider when you’re a feminist, and to each their own when it comes to the green. However, addressing racism, cultural appropriation, intersectionality, checking your damn privilege, and being able to accept when you’ve really really missed the mark are also really fucking important parts of being an inclusive feminist. If you’re happy to support conventionally beautiful tits, but can’t be bothered addressing the violence and exclusions faced by women who sit at the intersection of race and gender, then you’re a shit feminist.

Miley Cyrus, white child from Tennessee, who became famous from a Disney show her rich father got for her and then re-launched her career by sticking a foam finger up her vagina tries to tell Nicki how she should and should not address racism.

The tea is too damn hot.
