It hurts my heart every year to see white people reduce my people and culture down to party store decorations, mustaches, hats, serapes, base characterizations, and mixed drinks. 

In my life, my culture is beautiful, it’s vibrant, it’s messy, it’s rife with anti-blackness and hard conversations with my elders, it’s colonization and being whitened, it’s rich with the occult, it’s artistry, it’s colorism and indigenous denial, it’s humble and practical, it’s temporal, it’s ancestral respect, it’s family and laughter over kitchen tables, it’s comida, it’s NAFTA and back breaking work in the fields, it’s Raul & Brisenia Flores, it’s deserts traveled in the night, it’s manufactured borders, it’s ranchera blasting & Selena mourning, it’s plant medicine and curandero wisdom, it’s tres leches with that glazed fresa on top, it’s joteria, it’s mujerisma, it’s Tejanx pride, it’s LA Doyers, it’s chingonisma, it’s loteria, it’s fresh cut fruit in plastic cups with chile on top, it’s cempazuchitl, it’s secreting of traditions for safe keeping, it’s grandmas still living in the barrio, it’s complicated, it’s not universal–it’s more than can every be understood in English words and plastic sombreros and Jose Cuervos. 

Tomorrow there will be overflowing garbage cans stuffed full of day old decorations, people nursing hangovers, and overworked Mexicans doing all the clean up from your celebrating.

This past year has been quite the experience of cracking myself open and shaking things loose and I am grateful for the way femmes of color in my life and those that I admire have modeled for me that the process is the most important part of the “work.” I relate so much to the concept of liminality and I’m working to embrace it as a more than ok place to live in. That the threshold between is an invitation to be whole, that I’m both here and there and neither and both and where I’m going is just as important as where I’ve been and that there is strength in the ability to live in the liminal. When you try so hard not to fall back into emotional labor roles but you still do and then that person decides they can't handle you/want you/ghost on you after you help them clarify their wants and needs and desires through your labor and then they go on to do great things and you're both excited to see your labor in supporting that person work and have results because your labor is real and magic and you're also bitter because behind every white or masc or white masc person is a femme who helped make that shit happen who will almost never be ackowledged.

Lol when the post I made years ago about Halloween and Dia de los Muertos appropriation goes viral again every year and I start getting hate mail and mean replies/reposts (which I ignore happily).

Still here and still believe that if you are white you should never wear someone else's culture as a costume. It is not honoring me or my culture, it's not harmless, and it isn't cute. It just reeks of colonialism and white supremacy. And if you are told it's ok to dress as a Mexican or in DDLM themed costume by a Mexican, that does not give you a pass either. The lack of negative feelings of one person can not negate the context and harm enacted by cultural appropriation and white supremacy as a whole.

Just don't do it.

How to tell if you are emotionally abusive

I feel we talk about signs of abuse from the victims standpoint but not from the abusers standpoint. In order to stop emotional abuse and recognize when we engage in unhealthy behaviors I made this list.

Do you react to important people in your life by ignoring them completely and not acknowledging their presence? Especially if they do something you don’t like?

Do you feel that your partner/friends/family members are the cause of your bad moods or frustration?

Does your partner/etc “do things the wrong way”?

Do criticize your partner/etc for being unreliable or a bad person?

Do you feel you have to constantly overlook your partners flaws in order to be around them?

Are you frequently accused of being “moody” or “hard to please”?

Do your partners complain that “nothing they do is good enough?

Do your partners appear to avoid you when you are angry or upset rather then comfort you?

Do you negatively comment on their intelligence or appearence? Either in private or in front of others.

Do you blame them when someone goes wrong?

Do you ever use phrases like “I could just hit you right now” or “I”m so mad I could punch something”?

Do you ever punch walls/throw things in front of your partner/etc?

Do you leave during fights and not inform of where you are going and when you will be back?

Do you behave the same alone with your partner that you do if you were in front of your friends or in public?

Have you frequently accused your partner of being too sensitive?

How often is your partner praised and complimented by yourself?

Do you think your partner spends too much time with friends and family?

Do you feel your partners friends and family are trying to drive you apart?

Do you actively comfort your partner when they are upset or angry even if you don’t really understand why they feel the way they do?

If your partner brings up a behavior that bothers them do you respond by discussing how to change it or do you respond defensively?

Do you have difficulty apologizing?

All of these things are abuse tactics. Obviously even the healthiest of us will do these sometimes but if any one becomes a regular habit that’s when the problem starts.

this is super important, i feel like this website makes it easy to put yourself in the role of the victim but never the abuser. It’s also important to note that being a victim does not preclude you from being an abuser.

I find this esp. important. I’ve exhibited some of these behaviors. I know abuse perpetuates abuse and that victims of abuse learn abusive behavior. I also know that having mental illness can make reacting and dealing with feelings even more difficult. That being said: being mentally ill does not mean you cannot be held accountable for your actions. Nor does being a survivor of abuse. I gotta take care of myself & heal and recognize how trauma and mental illness plays a role in how I treat others. Being a victim doesn’t mean you cannot be an abuser too.

Please, lets not fall into any "good/bad" immigrant narratives & dichotomies. Borders, xenophobia, white supremacy, national-state imperialism, and capitalism are the problem. NOT the actions of individuals (or perceived criminality) or the amount of taxes one pays or how much we like or dislike that person or their ability to work or not or how assimilated someone is with americanism. When we use model citizenship as a justification for allowing some folks to stay or as a way to prove deportation's harm, we create a counter narrative of those lacking dignity, autonomy, and humanity. We absolutely must fight to keep our families and communities together but let's be careful of who we leave out as we do so.

Last night a young white woman obnoxiously jumped on stage during the encore act during the Bomba Estereo show and then jumped into the crowd. The throng of mostly latinx folks at the front of the stage literally just took a step back and let her tumble to the ground (she was fine apart from the apparent bruised ego). And this is over and over again I will say, I love my people/gente. #agloriousandpettylatinxcommunity
