The final image of the work.
We were not Born in Sin.
April 2018
Title inspired by a song lyric from the Lumineers song “Sleep on the Floor.”
During the work of the painting.
While I was working on this painting I had some key thoughts that might influence my work on it’s way forward.
-It is hard to learn any new material, but I really want to seek mastery in my next work with the juice or another new material, and not just use it because of it’s carried symbolism as a prop.
-Creating my own paint really made me reflect on the layering I could make in my art, if like cooking I could make everything out of scratch.
-The colour that the juice created in it’s reaction to the paper was unknown to me, and I am extremely interested in still being surprised as I work, and going in open minded.
Various notes during the painting of this work, and reflections as I tried to narrow down materials.
The only photo I captured during the making of the juice- the seeds in the bowl vs. what they were made into seemed just as separate as the apples in the plastic to it’s flesh. I really reflected during this process on how my body could be turned into pigment, as I am composed mostly of water.
Notes.
AGO Interning
Reflecting on my experience at the AGO, one of the stops I ended up visiting on my own was most often the early European gallery. Surrounded by these masterful and epic paintings, (like the Massacre of the Innocents, Rubens) I was inspired by the complexity and the compositions like the below image (The Capsizing of Humanity). Personally, I have lately found myself invested in complicated, multi-piece works like those of Doris Salcedo’s Chair installations. While I started with a sculptural work, I really wanted to use technical skill and repetition in the work.
The Capsizing of Humanity.
Citing this piece particularly because it came up when searching for compositions like that of the garden of Earthly delights. I drew inspiration from this work as it had several bodies splayed in a fashion that I was looking for. Specifically, the closeness I had hoped to make in the work as far as the mass of bodies that abstracts the work from a distance through light and shadow. When drawing, I was looking to this and the Garden of earthly delights to make the shadows believable for each subject, although I decided that it would be more successful if I made each subject sit in a different light to allow for a more evenly spread out composition with areas of darkness.

“My Life becomes a prop, and I the marionette.” -8:53AM
In mean of theatrical exploration inspired but the Garden of Earthly Delights, I find myself more than even becoming several characters in my day today. I have been “popular girl” and I have been “lonely girl,” “starving artist” and many other archetypes. The more I notice them, the more I act them out.
In the airplane on the way back to Toronto from the Dominican, I noticed little specks of condensation forming on the window as I saw the sunset. This bright red colour now reminds me of the pomegranate juice I’ve been concentrating as it boils in the pot.
In class workshop outcomes.
I was very inspired but the tracing and stains of bodies that turned into abstract work. While these look nothing like the projections, I relate this to my own work and the version of myself I portray in my art, vs my actuality.
More details on this work provided in the artist statement submitted.
See handwritten notes above-
The lipstick brought me back to the class lecture on staining, particularly when we had a chance to stain the onion skins under the microscope. I was watching the (8th?) I believe episode of Mad Men, where they created an advertisement on lipsticks directed at women where the tag at the time was “mark your man.” Together, both of these things led me to think about how lipstick has become a fetishized stain. The colour red has a history in iconic lipstick in makeup, but I also found it interesting that this colour is shared with blood, and that of the concentrated pomegranate juice that I brewed later on today.
Creativity?

I first glanced over this article with little reason as to why it was important to me in the first place. I had this realization that for me, because of the tough situations I was thrown into as a kid I did grow up too fast. I always wonder how things have affected me thus far, and if they had been different if I would be where I am right now-but most interestingly, who I am.
When reading this poem and many others short and like it-I’ve realized I use the word “we” to describe myself more than we? The idea of a collective conscious has been bothering me for the past few days, and that rather than being singular, I am a we as a whole. My camp director had always said that we had to wear many hats in a single role, and maybe my place in this world isn’t as one but as a many.
I had a dream where I could see myself in the dream but I was separate, and still me, drawing from this imagery and it’s importance to find itself in the waking world, I wonder if I am more than myself (or maybe thats just an idea of self-praise gone wild).
When recounting these poems for reference, I remember that some of them were written directed to others, and some were directed to myself. I think it’s strange how I can debate things in third person with myself.
