I'll say it. Despite the fact that I hate how Fairy Tail is full of fanservice and unnecessary nudity, I appreciate so much that the couples are actually liked. IN A SHONEN. The backstories? The yearning? the profound devotion? Unmatched. Like, they are not called the big four for nothing.

In Chapter 100 of Fairy Tail: 100 Year Quest (technically minor spoilers for anime-only watchers; I’m analyzing four panels that are just comedic relief and have no tie to the plot), Natsu is asked what 12 minus 5 equals.
Natsu (understandably, having had little to no education the vast majority of which took place 400+ years ago) hilariously doesn’t know the answer.
In trying to answer the question, he thinks aloud: “12 is the same number as Lucy’s keys, right? So what do you get when you take away 5?!” He decides the answer is 10.
It’s easy to laugh at his bad math but 10 is an extremely convenient number to answer precisely because Lucy doesn’t have 12 keys, she has 15 (10 gold keys: Aquarius (well, not anymore, but stay with me here), Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn; and 5 silver keys: Plue, Horologium, Lyra, Pixus, and Crux). 15 minus 5 is 10.
Is Natsu that oblivious over simple trivia about his best friend? Why, when posed with a math question, does his mind go straight to Lucy? At what point does “12” get tangled up with “15” in his mind? There are 12 Zodiac keys, but Lucy doesn’t have all of them and Natsu knows that.
Maybe this is a stretch but I like to think that Natsu holds all of Lucy’s keys in such high regard that that’s why he slipped up and got “12 (golden keys)” mixed up with “15 (total keys Lucy has)”.
And of course Natsu still counts Aquarius because, like Lucy, he doesn’t really see Lucy’s spirits as simple contracts that are made and lost—those are Lucy’s friends who have helped both her and Natsu through thick and thin. Just because Lucy doesn’t have Aquarius’ key anymore doesn’t mean Natsu’s just going to write Aquarius out of Lucy’s life. So of course Natsu still counts Aquarius!
There was a time when Natsu was drawn just as buff as Gajeel. Too bad the 100 years quest doesnt know that 🥲

every now and then i look back on this GIF i have of nalu during tartaros arc and cry about how this particular scene alone solidifies the beauty of their relationship (natsu holding lucy's hand gently in the face of chaos and panic did wonders to my heart)

The headcanon that Natsu already thinks him and Lucy are together and that she's on the same page as him on their relationship, while she actually has no clue he thinks that- is both smtg I can see being the case in canon, and being my only coping mechanism for not ever receiving any offical canon confirmation
