The Pyrenean populations of Megabunus diadema are quite unique. In other places where it is well established (Scandinavia, UK, Ireland, and Northern France) males are rare due to the ability for females to reproduce via facultative parthenogenesis. In the Pyrenees, the sex-ratio is largely in favor of males, sometimes making up 70% of total individuals or more. (D'Amico)

Only one female observed (4th img) when I visited Cauterets last summer, and also the only individual to bear a little frontal spine, which is allegedly an uncommon variation.

I wish I could find more of these long-legged pixies but four in a day is already a treat. :o)

Caught in the act! Springtails deposit spermatophores on little stalks but it's common for other springtails to come along and eat them as they're a great source of nutrition and energy (and maybe delicious too...). Here's two frames of a Ptenothrix atra doing just that!

A few macro shots from a walk in the woods yesterday. Lots of springtail action and plenty of fungi, typical of the damp conditions at this time of year. There's a shot here of a springtail laying an egg and the last image is something pretty special, it's a tiny springtail hatching from an egg.

Found today while gathering acorns (swamp white oak). How adorable is this? I love her little feet, and the way she pivots around her proboscis, fascinated by how far her head rotates… Curculio sp. (if anyone can ID to species, please add!)
