      THE FABRIC OF THE SHEET made a sharp whipping sound as charlie pulled it free from the washing-line strung up across the narrow alley. her patience was always limited, but she seemed even spikier than usual. she didn’t dignify the lady’s remark with a response, simply fixing her with a blank stare as she folded the laundry.
