I have had 3 notably VERY WHITE people say exactly that to me over the last 2 years, all either in queer venues or at Pride (the LGBT community centre, a trans Pride event, and at a conference I was speaking at) and every time I have replied with something along the lines of "Yeah, I know, white people can't look at a Gypsy without thinking we're violent, it's a huge problem."

The way that every single one uses the exact phrasing of "look like (you/they) would hatecrime me" makes me think that there was some viral skit that has made this seem like an acceptable thing to say to trans men, rather than it being totally original and spontaneous thoughts.
