It’s called the foot-in-the-door method. First, you propose something that is slightly outside of allowable norms: denying gay people wedding cakes on grounds of “religious freedom”. Then, you slowly ramp up how extreme your demands are, coercing the other side to giving a tiny bit of ground each time, until you’ve shifted the entire fucking playing field. Conservatives are also very fond of the door-to-face method, which is demanding something completely outlandish that you know will be refused, and then asking for something less ridiculous by way of compromise, again resulting in a gradual shift in norms until views that were once considered moderate or reasonable become unthinkably liberal by destroying people’s sense of standards. The combination of these methods is called the “foot-in-the-face” method, which sums up where this whole thing is headed quite nicely.

at some point in your life you will be boiling fruit, water, sugar, and lemon juice in a pot to make a syrup or jam. the instructions will tell you to simmer for a certain amt of time. your timer will go off and you will look at the pot and go, "hm, this doesn't look thick enough. maybe i'll let it go for another 10 minutes." this is the devil speaking. it's only so liquid right now because it is at boiling point. it will thicken when it cools down. learn from the follies of my youth and do not let this happen to you

at some point in your life you will be making a sauce or a stew in which you need to add cornstarch to thicken it. and you will prepare a slurry of starch in cold water and think "this looks like way too little starch to thicken this amount of liquid." this is the devil speaking. cornstarch instantly polymerizes at 95°C and if you add too much it will turn into an impossibly thick goop.

"these don't seem cooked enough," you will think to yourself, "i should place them back into the oven until their edges are nice and golden." this is the devil talking. this is how you get dry, overdone cookies. the cookies will continue to bake on the warm sheet for several more minutes and then harden up after sitting on a rack for a while. trust the process. trust the process.

Why it makes sense that the twins and Neil are short base on science:

Hello hello, this has been rattling around in my brain for forever. Basically, I love college and have been learning a lot about child and Adolescent development and thought I would give my two cents! :)

CW for child neglect

Children in extremely neglectful situations especially in the first 3 years are significantly smaller even if they're being fed adequately. This is why love is the most essential nutrient for a baby. The love hormone, oxytocin, is released when a baby does things like make eye contact with their parents or is soothed by a parent. It's basically what tells their brain that they can trust the world around them and develop typically. If this doesn't happen a lot of atypical and interesting things happen in their physical and psychological development. One of these is the size of their bodies and brains. (I can go into so much depth on this but this is what I'll give you for now)

1) Andrew

Obviously, Andrew spent his first three (very important developmentally) years with no consistency. He was in the foster system when America still thought it was a good idea to constantly be moving children between homes and not keeping them at one stable home for as long as possible. We encouraged constant relocation. This is TERRIBLE for the developing brain. I can also go into why this most likely affected his ability to form attachments based on science. Obviously this moving around was not a sustainable loving environment which can easily slip into neglect and elevated anxiety for a young Andrew brain.

2) Aaron

Tilda only went back for Aaron because she felt guilty, not because she loved or missed him. This does not give me any optimism about how much healthy oxytocin-inducing eye contact he got in his first 3 years. This lack of love, as previously explained, leads to smaller bodies and brains. A baby's size is actually a huge thing that pediatricians look for as a sign that a baby is being neglected. No matter how much you feed a neglected baby, growth will be impacted.

3) Neil

We know Neil has a short mom, so he is genetically predisposed to being vertically challenged. Still, there is an argument to be made for neglect here too. You can argue that Mary loved him and did her best to care for him. Many babies in neglectful situations have a parent who loves them and cares for them. They feed them and let them sleep, but are incapable of providing the love that a baby needs. Many parents who are neglectful were also neglected and never learned to form proper bonds with people, which can lead to not properly loving their baby. We know that Mary came from a crime family. We know that her version of loving Neil is Eat Sleep Survive and not usually Eye-contact Soothe Quality-time. This is still a neglectful situation. (parents can learn to love their babies in a healthy way even if they never learned it from their own parents though, so don't let this scare you! cycles can be broken <3)

Soooooo I know this topic is depressing but I feel like I have to defend Nora in her decision to make them short kings. I could talk a whole lot more on this. I have a whole Ted talk prepared. But also keep in mind I'm no prefessional and am still in college lol
