"[Story] has [trope]" is not the criticism you think it is. You gotta actually put in some work if you wanna critique a story. What does the story say about the trope? Does it subvert the trope in any way? Do the protagonists suffer because of the trope? Do they fail to meet the usual expectations of the trope?
"Jake Sully is a military dad" is not a critique in itself. I hate military dads too, but you gotta look at what the movie actually does with the fact that he's a military dad. Why is he motivated to treat his family like this? What's the fallout of Jake's behavior? Who gets hurt by it? Do the protagonists or antagonists suffer most as a result of Jake's parenting style? Is the movie trying to say that military parenting is good and leads to happy, healthy, whole families? Or is it saying that military parenting puts a strain on families, alienates kids who aren't expected to be soldiers (read: girls), and gets good kids killed?
I feel like this is Literary Analysis 101, but I keep seeing "this movie has tropes" style 'criticism' in the tags and I'm just baffled at how many people don't seem to even try to read between the lines

You walk in to discover Chan’s disdain, glaring at his painted nails exasperatedly, he shows them off to you.” Look!” He whines.” They broke again.”
“I’m sure it isn’t that bad.” You squinted, holding his hands close to you. He takes them back and frowns in disdain, looking over them carefully as if they’d magically repair themselves. Trying not to chuckle at his upset behaviour, you decided to suggest—” Maybe a bandaid would help?”
“Maybe.” He pouts.” Do you have one?”
“I think I do,” you mutter, rummaging through your purse, you cry a small ‘aha!’ and whipped out the pink packaged box of bandaids, the familiar cat mascot strikingly displaying itself in all its glory.
“Hellaur Kitty™️ bandaids!” You smile triumphantly.” Gotta look cute even when you’re hurt baby.”
“Hellaur Kitty™️...” He repeated, a bewildered yet excited smile growing on his face.” It’s pink!”
“Yeah!” You giggle, already unwrapping and placing them steadily on his nails.” Your fingers would look amazing and Stays are gonna love it when you go live later.”
After a moment of concentrated silence, you stood back to survey your finished work, "There!" you nod towards them teasingly.“ You like em?"
Wriggling his fingers, he flashes a small childish grin and chuckles.

There is a sort of catharsis when fast and intense paces of anger slows down into ones of sadness, then a full stationary stop of acceptance. It was just how it was sometimes when something that you hoped wouldn’t happen but did anyway. Though in this case, it was more of something that you wished you didn't feel.
Sniff
Stuffing your hands in your pockets, you silently let the small tears fall. Like all the other times this happened, you really didn't want it getting to you, for it was a silly thing to get upset over. Though you let yourself cry, there was no one watching after all.
Or at least, that was what you thought.
“You okay?”
Your head shot up but just as immediately ducked back down when you spot your best friend looking at you, concerned and confused.
But there was also a look about him that, for some reason, made you assume that he knew the reason why you were in your current sorry state.
“Fine.” You muttered, mustering your clearest voice, hoping that the shakiness in your breath didn’t give you away.” Just yawning.”
“You’re crying.”
“I really am not.”
“I’m not stupid.”
“I didn't say you were.” You shot back with a red-eyed glare,” just go home Gyu, you and I both know that I’ve been through this before.”
There was a silence, and it made you feel embarrassed, because it just meant that Beomgyu was realising and registering your reason to cry. The same stupid reason that you had told him before.
“Is that why you left halfway?”
A pause.
“It was somehow suffocating.” You replied weakly, and as you talked, you find your voice slowly rising by the tone, pouring out the pent up childish frustration that you had felt earlier.” I know some people like being single, but I don’t, not when I look at people happily giggling in relationships, and I know, I know, that it isn’t all sunshines and rainbows, and some days I really do consider myself better off not being in one. Though at the same time, it’s just sad!” You spat, pausing to find your words. “It’s me. I’m the problem. I’m the one that’s sad. Me, and I know that it’s pathetic but sometimes I just…I can’t bring myself to just only think about the bad things in relationships like I always do to convince myself that it sucks.”
Heaving, you start to turn to continue walking “Just go home Gyu.” You repeated, tired and drained. Though you did a double take when you spared a glance at him only to see the tall boy walk closer to you with an unreadable expression on his face.
At this point you didn’t really know what to do, you were conflicted, decisions arguing as you didn’t want him to come closer, but you didn’t want him to leave you alone either. You shouted anyway, your face a mix of anger and tears.
Maybe. Just maybe.
You wanted to see what he would do.
“I can handle this on my own.” You started firmly.” I walked out on my own for a reason, and I just wanted to be alone. Alone! Stop right there Choi Beomgyu, are you even listening to me? I just…!”
A warm hug.
And silence.
“Gyu let go.“
But there was no response.
“Gyu I said—“
“I heard what you said.” He replies clearly.” But I’ve comforted you about this before…can’t I just do it again?”
You stood there, unmoving for a while, until you huff softly, with relief but also amusement at his stubbornness as you clutched him a little tighter. “You’re horrible.” You muffled after a while, feeling slightly better as you clutched him a little tighter, trying not to touch his jacket with your abscess of tears.
“I think the words that you're trying to find are: Thank you, my bestest friend Beomgyu.”
You glanced at him again but this time with a slight smile.” I'm not gonna say ‘bestest friend Beomgyu’, but I will say thank you.”
“No no, it’s bestest friend Beomgyu.” He enunciates slowly, hand motioning each syllable in the air with his thumb and pointer finger pressed together.” Come on, you can do it! Best…”
“No.”
A breathy blurt of laughter exploded from you as he gives you a side eye, together with the usual prominent pout. Linking your arm around his, you chuckle as you drag him towards the direction of a nearby convenience store.
Taking down the camera from your eye level, you surveyed the picture that you just took. You didn’t know which one was more pretty. Bangchan, or the bright turquoise sea. He really was a man who loved the beach at heart.
You readied your camera to take another candid photo, but you had to quickly lower it when Chan unexpectedly turns to your direction, and a grin sports his already satisfied face.
“Where are you pointing that thing?” He chuckles, nodding at the lapping waves that played on both of your feet” I said take more photos of the sea, not of me.”
“I am taking photos of the sea.” You shrugged teasingly, you technically weren’t lying.” You’re just in the picture that’s all.”
“Uh huh.” He plays along, raising a brow mockingly.” Alright photographer.”
Smiling, you stepped back and raised your camera again to take a photo, of the sea of course, and you sneaked a glance at him from your camera, amused that he still wasn’t looking at your direction and staying ignorant.
