a/n - this was a writing warm up that I did a bit ago. hope you enjoy.
The sky is never blue anymore, only the color of rust and brushed bodies. The air smells like rot, too still to breathe in.
The ceiling above you breathes in slow pulses, pulling away from itself with water damage, the edges are dark, but it's safe. The only safety you've known for a while. You've lost track of time.
“It's quiet.” Minho hums, voice low and smooth. “We should rest while we can.”
The body behind you settles, finally breathes. Hyunjin's been asking for quiet. “One of us should–”
“I will.” Chan stands, decided. “I'll stay up, can't sleep even if I wanted to.”
That's been the reality, sleepless nights and running in circles. The others stay quiet. Seungmin sits in the corner, legs out in front of him and staring at nothing. His right eye’s gone cloudy, milky in appearance and dark behind it. Gone.
“We'll need to move soon. Around dawn.” You sit up, the mattress creaks, the springs are rusted and giving. Minho looks over, watches you. “The next stop will be better. There's something better.”
He always says that, they all do, trying to keep hope alive when you've watched it die for months.
“Yeah, it will be.” Your voice is small, contradictory in its hopelessness.
The room settles then, Chan leaves, walks through the dim house, pistol in hand and half loaded. The bones of the house are cracked around you like it's been nearly crushed. He goes to the main room and posts by the window.
Back in the bedroom Seungmin doesn't move, doesn't speak, only closes his eyes and sighs. Hyunjin lays beside you, staring at the ceiling where it breathes. Never comfortable, always half in and half out. Minho sits by the bedroom window, careful hands checking the shotgun he took from a body like it always belonged to him.
There's two bullets left in the magazine, one in the chamber.
The hours pass in silence, in rotating shifts and taking turns drifting off. Dawn is two hours away now, no one wants it to be that close.
Hyunjin’s been holding you, long arms wrapped around your middle and clinging for warmth, comfort. He kisses your temple before sitting up, sitting on the edge of the bed like if he doesn't do it now he never will.
You follow him, eyes landing on Seungmin just when he wakes up. You go over and kneel in front of him. He looks at you, tired eyes and forced hope.
“Let me see your eye.” He doesn't say anything, doesn't need to, just leans closer, one hand on your waist to steady himself.
You can still see it, the scars from the glass. The space where his pupil split. It's red rimmed but otherwise fine, healing.
“Does it hurt?”
He holds your gaze with his left eye, a small smile pulls, joyless.
“Everything hurts.”
Your hand cups his jaw and he leans into it, sighing softly and pulling you closer. Your arms wrap around his neck and his head rests on your chest. You feel him breathe, actually breathe.
Minho watches from his spot near the window, then he closes his eyes, resting for a moment until—
“Here.” Chan calls, just loud enough to grab attention. They're here... that ruins the plan.
Minho's eyes snap open, Hyunjin stands and Seungmin’s grip tightens before letting go.
“The sun hasn't come up yet…” Hyunjin says. Looking towards the dark gray sky like it's betrayed you. The sun was your saving grace. It blinds them, gives you enough of an upper hand to get to the next spot.
Minho tries to fix it, thinking out loud. “We'll wait it out, just until the sun comes up.”
“We'll be surrounded by then.” Your voice is rough with disuse. “Trying to go around one that can see is better than ten blind ones.” He stops, stares, he knows you're right.
“Grab your stuff.” Hyunjin's moving before Minho even finishes. Chan comes back, brows furrowed.
“Three of them.” You freeze, look at him. “I know… I know.” The sound comes through before anyone can say another word—deep and rough, something between a growl and snarl. The drag of overgrown limbs follows, feet and fists dragging large hungry bodies forward.
Chris whispers, “One out front.”
Hyunjin grabs a knife, Minho and Seungmin get a grip on their guns. You step into Chris’ side, he shifts for you.
“Don't move.”
You don't, no one does. You listen, close your eyes and listen. You stay like that for too long. Long enough for it to pass, long enough for your legs to ache where you tense your thighs. As soon as it's far enough, as soon as you don't hear the wet drag, Minho's moving.
“West.” He whispers, quick. “We're heading west, keep low.”
You all follow, Seungmin then you and Chris with Hyunjin trailing behind. He's got a slight limp and no time to care. You all leave through the side window, low enough for a smooth escape.
Backyards aren't safe, other people might be there. And the sidewalk is worse, Walkers roaming, bodies scattered like confetti. Either way you're trying your luck.
Hyunjin looks over the fence into the neighboring yard, clear. “I don't see anyone.” Seungmin looks too, though he's less accurate.
“But the next fence is too high.” They look around, there's nothing else, no other way. “Too much noise is a death sentence.”
You look away from them, up towards the roof, then follow the line of houses until your head makes sense of it all.
“We go up.” You whisper, looking for something to let you in, something to make it work out. “Here, we climb up. This rail is low enough.”
Chris follows you, vets the idea. “We'd have to jump the gap. We don't know the condition of–”
Hyunjin interrupts “We don't have the time to worry about conditions.”
He's right.
Minho comes up behind you, looking it over. Get up on the trash can, step onto the porch awning and pull up. That's all it'll take.
“I’ll go first, Chan last.” You all shift accordingly, like a line for some carnival ride. Minho's fast, he stands up on the trash can and it rattles, you flinch.
“Careful.” You whisper, looking behind you, listening for the sick wet drag. Minho hoists himself up, perfect landing.
“C'mon, baby.” Chris lifts you, the trash can rattles again and Hyunjin watches the street through the gap. Still clear.
Minho reaches out, grabs your hands and carries the bulk of your weight. Chris pushes up and you're up there. Seungmin is next, tall enough to do most of the work himself but you and Minho help him clear it.
Hyunjin is harder, one leg bruised and barely healed under ripped denim. He avoids the can, pulls himself up with a muffled groan.
“You got it.” his forearms scrap the shingles, Minho pulls up the rest of his weight.
Chris lifts himself, Seungmin waits and watches, ready to help. He doesn't need it. Everyone's up.
Minho looks across both ways, surveying the gaps, trying to avoid going the way you came last night.
He still wants to go west.
“There's a store down there, a couple of them. We can find something.” Hyunjin looks over the edge, careful, trying to make it look doable.
Seungmin looks the other way, barely trusting his judgement. “What if there are people there? They're not just gonna offer their supplies.”
“We get there first.” Minho says. “Worry about that when we have to.”
The sky is turning slowly, lightening bit by bit but not enough. You can hear a Walker nearby, dragging itself slowly. Minho sets the direction, he tells you what to do—Don't jump on the edge, push from your knees and keep your body as upright as you can. He says that when you get to the buildings it'll be easier.
Chan goes first this time. He jumps like he doesn't have time to second guess it. His land is stable, he feels around quickly, trying to find a soft spot then gives a thumbs up, all clear. Seungmin goes next, not as stable, eyeing it as clear as he can. Chan catches his arm, pulls him onto the roof.
The drag is getting closer. The low gargle in the throat of whatever monster the nation you were meant to trust created. You go next, you're smaller, you push harder, it makes a sound when you land. Minho watches the street. Clear.
Hyunjin does better than expected, landing clean, hissing at the impact. You hold him when he gets to the other side. Hug him to you like it was a close call, because if your honest, this is all a close call.
Minho goes last, he lines it up right, he gets a good jump—and his foot slips. Right when he gets to the other side. His boot hits the gutter, the metal clanks and rattles. Chan pulls him up, Seungmin grabs the other side, and Hyunjin—
“Shit.” Hyunjin sees one coming. “down the street.” He whispers, backing slowly to the opposite edge.
You all scramble, as calm and controlled as you can be in the wake of something that wants to kill you. It’s faster now, Seungmin then Chan then you. Hyunjin makes it fine, Minho's perfect.
“Get low.” Chan whispers, watching the Walker close in slow. “We should wait it out.”
You all agree, better safe than sorry—but it doesn't move. It settles two houses down, sniffing around like it isn't the size of an elephant with eyes of an overgrown fly. It's knuckles crush fallen bodies like they're nothing more than pebbles in the way.
“This isn't stable.” Minho whispers, pressing faintly into the shingles beneath him. “It's gonna give.”
Seungmin hisses a curse, Chan watches the street and Hyunjin is holding onto your waist like it can ground him outside of the blooming adrenaline.
“Let's move.” Chan calls it. You all make it to the edge slowly, avoiding the soft spots, careful of the creaking. Chan goes first, Minho and Hyunjin help you next, you land right into Chan's arms.
Hyunjin hesitates. This gap is wider. More room for his injured leg to fail him.
“We're not letting you fall.” Seungmin says, light and determined.
“And if you do,” Minho adds, “We're not letting you die.”
Hyunjin knows that. He knows that you'll all do what you can, but it's not a guarantee. That's how you lost Jeongin.
He takes a breath, doesn't look down, and goes for it. Chris catches his arm, pulling him back and his good foot lands it. His other hits the edge of the roof, there's no gutter—but the shingles are jagged.
Hyunjin holds back a groan, just barely hissing in pain when Chan passes him off to you.
“Shh, shh, let me see.” you don't have to do much to see the damage. There's blood staining the light denim at his shin, a tear in his pants. “Damn it.”
Behind you, Minho jumps next, a solid landing. Then goes Seungmin—and it's off. He couldn't make out the depth. He just barely makes it.
Chan and Minho grab his arms, keeping him from falling but now he's hanging like dead Christmas lights. Hyunjin hurries over, putting his own injury aside to help.
Seungmin tries. He tries to get a grip on something, he tries to use his core to push himself up. He's close. So close.
“Guys.” Your voice comes small, sharp. “Guys, we have to go.”
The Walker is coming. It hears you, smells the blood seeping out of Hyunjin’s ripped flesh. It pulls itself closer, smelling, following.
They get Seungmin up with one final pull and a pained groan. The shingles got him too. Punctures along his abdomen and crimson seeping through fabric. You don't have time to look at it.
“Go.” Minho hurries to the other edge, jumps, and feels it out. “C'mon”.
Clear.
You all follow. It's fine. You go again, and again, and again. You're one away from the corner now. Almost in the clear—and one comes from beneath the last house. It pulls itself up from broken ground, sniffing for you like you called it. It looks your way, the sky isn't bright enough yet. It sees you.
The sound is deafening. A screech like a derailing train. It pulls itself over, quick.
“Go, fucking go.” There's no time to wait, no time to plan. You jump the next one. Minho then Seungmin, Chan then you and finally Hyunjin.
Hyunjin lands—wrong. A soft spot. His foot breaks through, the roof caves. He reaches for the closest thing to him.
You.
“No!” Chan doubles back, rushing for you. Your side hits the roof, you start to slide, trying not to scream. Hyunjin is holding onto you, holding onto the roof, holding on to nearly nothing.
The Walker is too close. The sick drag is too loud to escape. Minho and Seungmin aim, ready to fire. Ready to do what they have to.
“Don't let go, baby.” Hyunjin begs, apologetic in a way that bleeds. “Don't let go.”
You're too close to the edge. Perched on a soft spot, boots planted into the roof to keep you from dangling. Your core burns, something about your side doesn't feel right.
Hyunjin’s grip is shaking.
Chan makes it to you, slow and careful. He takes your hand from Hyunjin’s, then reaches for the other.
“I got ya, reach for me.” You do, you try, your arms are too short to make the distance. “You got it.”
The Walker is too close.
“Under us.” Minho calls, finger on the trigger.
Your breath is shaking. Your core is shaking. “I'll push.” Chan talks you through it. Use your legs, he'll catch your other hand. You risk it, no time to think against it—because you hear the rip. The weight of the house being tilted as the monster tries to climb it.
You push, Chan catches and pulls. He's got you. You're steady.
“Hyunjin–” he lets go. Seungmin sees the moment it happens. The moment he can't support his own weight with the house giving up under him.
“No!” It all creaks beneath you, unsteady. Minho nearly loses his footing.
You rush to the hole where Hyunjin fell, too soft to keep your weight. You don't care.
“Baby, don't!” Minho calls, rushing forward. You look in, and he's there.
On the ground, two floors down and not moving. He's not fucking moving.
Your breath catches, you're nearly stuck in place when finally—the house tilts too far, and you follow the path.
“Fuck!” You can hear Chan, hear Minho telling them what to do, the shooting and groaning of the Walker.
Then it all dulls. You hit the ground, right beside Hyunjin. Too hard, but not hard enough to kill you. You wish it would've killed you.
You manage to turn your head, a pained breath huffing from chapped lips. And there he is, already looking at you.
“Hyun…” your voice is weak, pained. Your eyes scan, looking for a sign from him. Anything. “Hyun..?”
A single tear falls, soaks into whatever's broken beneath you—then he blinks.
“Don't move.” It's barely a whisper, but it's enough. His hand finds yours and he intertwines your fingers nice and slow. “They'll come.”
You both know they will. They'll come for you both. Kill it, then rescue. That's how it always goes. That's the plan.
You hear the shots get closer, the Walker screams into the stale air—then there's another. And another. Somewhere in the house you hear a thud, then another. Too fast to be anything but human. They're coming.

i know this can be said over and over again, but pls consider sometimes sending some love to creators whose work u rly enjoy. an encouraging ask or a nice tag can do a lot for the mental, and make ppl feel seen and appreciated. i know it can feel daunting/corny but trust me, a small kindness will go a long way and change the perspective for someone. i see creators struggle with doubt a lot, and some disappear. lets keep our fandoms alive and thriving 💜
