The Kids Want Communism is an ongoing clandestine and public series of events marking ninety-nine years to the Bolshevik Revolution. A joint project of numerous individuals and organizations hosting exhibitions, screenings, discussions, seminars and publications throughout 2016, The Kids Want Communism takes place in a variety of locations. Among them tranzit, Prague, The Visual Culture Research Center, Kyiv, Free/Slow University Warsaw, State of Concept, Athens, Skuc gallery, Ljubljana, and MoBY-Museums of Bat Yam. This Tumblr will feature the best of TKWC: essays, programmatic texts, sci-fi snippets, exclusive images and interviews, allowing you to keep up with our hypothesis of universal emancipation.

Being Together Precedes Being — Philadelphia book launch at Slought

Slought is pleased to announce The Kids Want Communism, a public conversation exploring the legacies and meaning of communism today. The event will feature writers and scholars including Marissa Brostoff, Kristen Ghodsee, Malcolm Harris, and Joshua Simon, and marks the publication of the book  Being Together Precedes Being: A Textbook for The Kids Want Communism  (Archive Books), copies of which will be available courtesy of Ulises, and is presented in partnership with Philly Socialists. Specters are haunting the globe—the specters of anticommunism. From the European Union and its erosion to the disastrous "war on terror" and the destruction of the welfare state; from Wahhabism to neoliberalism; from debt economy to privatization; from game theory and disruptive innovation to cybernetics, and the surveillance of entertainment devices - all these anticommunisms are fighting one another, and collectively haunting us. What began with the implosion of real existing socialism almost thirty years ago comes full circle with the current collapse of the neoliberal arrangements that were then constituted. The discussion will consider communist legacies and knowledge inside and outside of real-existing socialism, to address some urgent questions facing us today: automation and reproductive labor, human capital and algorithmic management, environmental capitalist reform and planning for zero growth. From the Cold War to Global Warming, from the Soviet Block to Blockchain technology, from the Space Race to Space X, the word communism stands again as the radical opposition for exploitation and inequality. Being Together Precedes Being offers itself as a text book for The Kids Want Communism project, which was initiated towards the 99th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution of October 1917 as a series of exhibitions, symposiums and conferences, screening programs, publications and a summer camp around the world. In this textbook, communism does not merely describe an "us versus them" relation, but also offers that we are becoming the future. This trajectory of communism runs parallel to us at every single moment and its guiding principle is that being together precedes being. This event is free and open to the public.

Communists Anonymous: First Gathering in Philadelphia

Join the first gathering of Communists Anonymous in Philadelphia, a celebration of the constitutive book “Solution 275–294: Communists Anonymous” (edited by Ingo Niermann and Joshua Simon, Sternberg Press, 2017), with Hammam Aldouri, Mark Johnson, Pavel Khazanov, Kate Kraczon, Marina McDougall Vella, Joshua Simon, Helen Stuhr-Rommereim, and everyone interested in sharing their relations to communisms present, past, and future.

The members of Communists Anonymous (COMA) suffer from an incurable belief in communism. They don’t share any particular school, but they do share an extreme sense of empathy and justice, and therefore detest more or less any form of private property. Because there is currently no communist state in existence, acting out their passion would hopelessly distress them, at best curbing and stabilizing the brutalities of capitalist society.

COMA is meant to evolve into a worldwide cluster of self-help groups where incurable communists can discuss their recent temptations and relapses in the futile fight against capitalism. COMA’s “fearless moral inventory” challenges the historical manifestations of communism as being substantially incomplete in thought and practice and places communism again where it originates—in the realm of fiction. COMA believes that the most vital dialectics in human history are at play in fiction contradicting reality. Only as fiction can communism manifest itself again beyond doubt.

“Dirty words. We all use them, but there are some that we never use, because their meaning is too littered with painful associations and potential shame. But what about words that are not just tainted with the stain of history, but whose use in the present feels outmoded or undesirable? Like Cold War and Communism?

Accordingly, Ana Pinto comments on two recent exhibitions in Berlin that dared to speak those names, and wonders if there is anything to the unfashionableness of these terms today. Art has always been a well-spring of the forgotten and outmoded, but is it up to this difficult task?”

Beyond the kibbutz

Contemporary artists have their say on the centennial in Israeli exhibition The Kids Want Communism.

“Started as an exhibition series at Israel’s Museums of Bat Yam last year, The Kids Want Communism arrived at Kreuzberg’s Kunstraum Bethanien in September courtesy of the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung. With works by 20 artists, many of them Israeli-based, it’s conceived as an opportunity to discuss socialism in the 20th century along new dialectical horizons.

Curator Joshua Simon states: “Everywhere capitalism is shown, it always brings communism as an option for its radical denial.” However, this engaging and thought-provoking exhibition does not just offer an “us against them” ideology, but considers socialism as an alternative axis that prioritizes all forms of “being together”. In one literal example, New Barbizon, a female collective born and raised in the Soviet Union, presents current-day paintings depicting their childhoods alongside original paintings they made as children.

The exhibition as a whole spans vaster territory, from Olaf Nicolai’s Communist Manifesto illustrated via step-by-step yoga instructions to Ohad Meromi’s “Structure for Rest”, an IKEA-like modular bunk bed built for “daydreaming other worlds”.

Particularly noteworthy is Micah Hesse’s 3D video Types of Stereo, which invites us to think beyond (binocular) human vision itself. Israel’s own history with communism doesn’t go unremarked on, with historical documents from the communist Jewish-Arab Brotherhood and its early struggle against Israel-Palestine ethnic segregation. The Russian Revolution, as Painted By Children

One century ago, a teacher in Moscow collected drawings by his students that showed the events unfolding outside the school's doors: protests, revolution, and civil war. העתיד חזר, ואיתו גם הקומוניזם | יהושע סימון

קומוניזם הוא קוסמוס שלם שנעלם בתוך החור השחור של 1989-1991, אבל מה שהתחיל בקריסת המשטרים הסוציאליסטים של המאה העשרים מגיע לסיומו עם קריסת ההסדרים הניאו–ליברלים מול עינינו. על התערוכה ״הילדים רוצים קומוניזם״

רוחות רפאים רודפות את כדור הארץ – רוחות רפאים של אנטי–קומוניזם. מהתפשטות הוואהביזם הג'יהדיסטי בחסות האימפריה האמריקנית לניאוליברליזם ולאיחוד האירופי, מהחורבן שהמיטה "המלחמה נגד הטרור" לג'נוסייד של מדינת הרווחה, מכלכלת חוב וספיגת עודפי ייצור להפרטות, מתורת המשחקים ו"חדשנות משבשת" לקיברנטיקה ותוצריה ובראשם האינטרנט – כל אלה הם אנטי–קומוניזמים שנלחמים אלה באלה ועתה רודפים אותנו. באווירה אפוקליפטית שבה נדמה שבכל היבט – אישי, פוליטי, כלכלי, חברתי, מוסרי, סביבתי, ביולוגי – הציביליזציה האנושית עסוקה בהאצת חורבן החיים עצמם, סדרת התערוכות במובי: מוזיאוני בת ים, ״הילדים רוצים קומוניזם״ (2016–2017), ביקשה לציין 99 שנים למהפכה הבולשביקית (1917.

ציון 99 שנים מציע לחשוב לא רק על הנסיבות והתוצאות של הסוציאליזם המפותח באירופה ואסיה של המאה העשרים. ציון מועד זה פותח אפשרות לבחון מה כמעט קרה, מה לא קרה, מה יכול היה לקרות, מה צריך היה לקרות, מה עוד יכול לקרות. החומרים שהוצגו במסגרת התערוכות במוזיאון (למעלה מארבעים פרויקטים בסך הכל) כוללים מצד אחד חומרים שהגיעו מהמשטרים הסוציאליסטים של המאה העשרים – עבודות ותוכניות סרטים מארכיונים שונים, הנותנות עדות הן לדימיון שהתאפשר במציאות של סוציאליזם והן לאוניברסליזם שהוא קידם. לצד אלה הוצגו עבודות חדשות שניזונות גם הן מההיסטוריה הקומוניסטית, באופן שרואה בקומוניזם אופק שמאפשר פרספקטיבה לגבי העולם בו אנו נמצאים היום.

"מכל המלים שהניעו בעבר חלומות גדולים ותקוות אדירות קדימה, המלה קומוניזם סבלה מהנזק הגדול ביותר. זאת בשל העובדה שנלקחה בשבי על ידי ריאל-פוליטיק ביורוקרטי והפכה כלי שרת בידי מפעל טוטליטרי. עם זאת, השאלה נותרה בעינה, האם מכל המלים שניזוקו, ישנן אלה שראויות לתיקון והתנעה מחדש", כך כתב הקומוניסט הצרפתי בן זמננו דניאל בן סעיד במאמר האחרון שלו שפורסם אחרי מותו. אופני ההתייחסות היום לקומוניזם, נסמכים ברובם לביטוייו בסוציאליזם שהתקיים במאה העשרים. היסטוריה זו מפעילה רבות מהעבודות בתערוכות השונות של "הילדים רוצים קומוניזם". אבל העבודות חורגות מהאילוסטרציה של האירועים ההיסטוריים ועושות בהם שימוש על מנת לאתר יכולות, הזדמנויות, זרמים והקשרים שכוחם יפה לשימוש בשבילנו היום. ושימוש זה כפול – לא רק במה לנין, למשל, יכול להיות רלוונטי לנו, אלא גם במה אנחנו יכולים להיות רלוונטיים בשביל לנין. התערוכה בסבביה השונים לא היתה בנויה על דימויים של דגלים ומצעדים, וגם לא כבולה לחגיגה או הוקעה של נסיבות היסטוריות כאלה ואחרות. מבנה המוזיאון עצמו שימש לנו כמעין תחנת חלל שמכוונת לשייט במרחבים שאין לנו גישה אליהם היום על פני כדור הארץ. פרספקטיבות, מערכי צירים וזיקות שנדמות בלתי מתקבלות על הדעת תחת המציאות הפוליטית הנוכחית, שהתוקף שלה מתיימר להיות עקבי ומוחלט כמו חוקי הפיזיקה ששולטים בחיינו על כוכב הלכת ארץ.

בסרטים דוגמת "2001 אודיסאה בחלל" (סטנלי קובריק, 1968), "סולריס" (אנדריי טרקובסקי, 1972) ו"מלנכוליה" (לארס פון טרייר, 2011), ישנו יחס של הידהוד בין גרמי השמים והאנשים שפוגשים בהם. בסרטים אלה, כוכב הלכת שמתקרב לכדור הארץ וזה שבני האנוש חוקרים, כמו גם מערכת ההפעלה הממוחשבת שמאפשרת את מסעם של בני האדם, כולם בעלי תודעה בעצמם. תודעה זו ניזונה ומשקפת את המגבלות של האנשים והחברה שיצאו לחקור או להשתמש בהם. כשצורתו הטבעתית מדמה את זו של תחנת חלל, המוזיאון והתערוכות בו מכוונים לחלל העמוק בו מתקיימים חוקים פיזיקליים שונים ולא צפויים מאלה שעל כוכב הלכת ארץ היום.

"קומוניזם" היא המלה שיותר מכל אחת אחרת מבטאת את השלילה המוחלטת של המציאות בה אי–שיוויון וניצול נחגגים כניצחון והצלחה בעולמנו. לכל מקום שקפיטליזם הולך הוא מביא איתו את הקומוניזם כאפשרות של שלילתו המוחלטת. אבל קומוניזם לא מסתפק בתיאור יחסי כוחות של החיץ המעמדי לפי "אנחנו" מול "הם," אלא מציע ציר נוסף – אנחנו נהפכים להיות העתיד. הציר הזה פועל בכל רגע ועיקרו שהחיים–יחד הם התנאי לקיומם של כל חיים; ביולוגיים, פוליטיים, פסיכולוגיים, משפחתיים, חברתיים וכולי.

קומוניזם הוא קוסמוס שלם שנעלם בתוך החור השחור של 1989-1991. קוסמוס זה כולל קומוניזמים מרובים: כינונן מחדש של חברות ללא–רכוש, קהיליות ילידיות שיתופיות, הסוציאליזם שהתקיים במדינות הגוש הסובייטי על הישגיו ופשעיו, ההיסטוריה ההירואית של מאבק אנטי–פאשיסטי והניצחון על הנאצים, תיאולוגיה של שיוויון, המפלגה המהפכנית, אינטרנציונליזם ושחרור האומות המשועבדות מידי האימפריות, שיוויון בין המינים והשכלה ורווחה לכל, חיסולו מבפנים של הקפיטליזם באמצעות תכונותיו שלו לצד כיסי ההתנגדות שאינם ניתנים לניכוס על ידי הקפיטליזם, הסולידריות והאחווה שכבר–עתה קיימים תדיר בין אנשים, ההצעה הפוליטית של הרגש ששמו "אהבה."

אוניברסליזם הוא הדבר שאבד עם הגלובליזציה. גלובליזציה מבוססת על זמינותם התמידית של כל תחומי החיים לניצולו של ההון. כפי שמסביר הגיאוגרף המרקסיסט דייויד הארווי, מבחינה פוליטית, כלכלית ותרבותית, גלובליזציה בנויה על חיזוקם, עיגונם וניצולם של הבדלים בין גיאוגרפיות שונות. באופן זה, הקפיטליזם מעביר מגיאוגרפיה אחת לשנייה כל מגבלה בה הוא נתקל, כך שזו הופכת להזדמנות חדשה. קריסת הגוש הסובייטי ב-1990 הייתה, כביכול, הרגע שבו הדמוקרטיה הקפיטליסטית ניצחה את מדינת המשטרה הסוציאליסטית. מאז, ניתן לראות איך שני איברים של כוחות יריבים אלה התחברו יחדיו לכדי מדינת משטרה קפיטליסטית. האפשרות לשלב שני איברים אחרים מהכוחות היריבים — סוציאליזם ודמוקרטיה — נזנחה לנוכח מציאות בה ברית המועצות אינה קיימת עוד. בהיעדר האתגר המתמיד שהציבה ברית המועצות בעצם קיומה, המציאות של מדינת הרווחה, שהיתה פשרה עם קיומה של ברית המועצות, נשחקה עד דק.

עתה, הדמוקרטיות הפרוצדורליות בהן אנו חיים, משהות חירויות בכל עת ומשילות מעליהן את הליברליזם שהתגאו בו בזמן המלחמה הקרה, דבר שמוכיח שהדמוקרטיות הליברליות של הצפון המתועש הן בעצמן תוצר של הסוציאליזם שהתקיים במאה העשרים. כך, השסע שבמרכז חיינו הפוליטיים מתעצב לאור המתח שבין קפיטליזם ודמוקרטיה. מה שהתחיל בקריסת המשטרים הסוציאליסטים של המאה העשרים מגיע לסיומו עם קריסת ההסדרים הניאו–ליברלים מול עינינו. את פשר עוצמת האירועים הפוליטיים סביבנו וקצבם המואץ יש לשקול ביחס לימי נפילת הגוש הסובייטי והטיפול בהלם שעברו כלכלות המדינות הפוסט–סובייטיות.

ההמולה הפוליטית שמתרחשת מול עינינו אצל העמים שהפיצו את הגלובליזציה – בריטניה וארצות הברית – מראה אזרחים משלמי מיסים הנתונים במשבר חוב מתמיד מבכרים את האומה, בצורת יציאת בריטניה מהאיחוד האירופאי ובבחירת דונלד טראמפ לנשיא. לעומתם, נושים ובעלי איגרות חוב מקדמים מודל של גלובליזציה בלתי ניתן ליישום – בין אם זה האיחוד האירופאי או מפלגת וול סטרייט שמיוצגת באמצעות הדמוקרטים והרפובליקנים בארצות הברית. בתוך המאבק של שני הקטבים איננו מסוגלים למצוא נקודות מוצא פוטנציאליות עבור פרויקטים פוליטיים שדרכם ניתן להתמודד עם האומה והגלובליזציה – למשל כדור הארץ, או אוניברסליות.

רעיון קץ ההיסטוריה אשר שרר מאז 1990, טומן בחובו את סופו של העתיד עצמו. גורלנו נחרץ אל העכשווי – העתיד נהיה "עוד כמו ההווה." עתה, עם שיבת ההיסטוריה, לפעמים בדרכים הנוראות ביותר, העתיד גם הוא חזר. יחד אתו, אנחנו יכולים לדמיין איך קומוניזם יכול להופיע כפרויקט בר–קיימא. לכן, עולמות קומוניסטים אחרים בהם התמקדו התערוכות, מגלים לנו לא רק את מה שהיה, אלה גם את העתיד לבוא.

אסטרופיזיקה ומדע בדיוני, חלומות ותורי המתנה, עבודה וילדות, החלל החיצון ומלחמות אזרחים, מאדים ותלת מימד, חינוך חינם ודיור ציבורי, אנדרטאות וקיברנטיקה, פתרונות שהם בעיות ובעיות שהן פתרונות, משלחות נוער ושותפות יהודית–ערבית, דאצ'ות ושביתות, מסילות ברזל ותיאטרון בובות, מטריאליזם דיאלקטי והאנציקלופדיה הסובייטית הגדולה – קומוניזם הוא לא ארץ ולא יבשת, וגם לא כוכב אחר; זוהי מערכת כוכבים שלמה שכבר נעה. זהו קוסמוס שנוצר עם החיים עצמם. הילדים רוצים קומוניזם.
