Ok. Butterflies. Well, the word “butterfly” itself is in the title. Butterflies are all through out the film. (although I only noticed them towards the end ahem) There’s also the scene of Sammy looking for his caterpillar. It was just inside the cocoon and, as his mom explained, will be unrecognizable when it comes out, aka a butterfly.
We can relate this to Will. Before joining, or even meeting Mr. Mendez, he was just... a display. A “perversion of nature” to be an attraction in a freak show. Just like Sammy’s caterpillar in a jar, he seemed kind of just, stuck there. After meeting Mr. Mendez and joining him, though not as a part of the circus, we can relate that to a caterpillar in a cocoon. He’s changing. Words such as “a man who even god turned his back upon” not weighing him as much.
Then the turning point was when he first swam. It was like a caterpillar coming out of it’s cocoon, but as a butterfly. He now knew that he could do something even without having limbs. He eventually joined the circus and he looks very much happy. Audiences were amazed by him, like he was a pretty and colorful butterfly.
This is most definitely the reason it’s called “Butterfly Circus”. Each one of them struggled before joining. But after joining, they became beautiful butterflies. Shining and standing out all differently. Being free.
Also, we all know the butterfly effect. I’d say Will joining the circus is because of it. I mean, if Sammy didn’t want to go to the sideshow, Will wouldn’t have met Mr. Mendez. Which eventually leads to him secretly riding their cart, befriending those at the circus, and going to the river. If someone had helped him at the river is an example too. If someone had helped him, he wouldn’t have found out he could swim and finally join the circus.
this was actually longer than i thought i swear this was short in my head (but then again those were just the ideas and expanding those is what made it longer)
