The Azure I was on the edge of sleep and suddenly in my mind's eye this powerful presence appeared.
It was larger than life and so -there- that I bodily jerked awake, with just the after-image left.
Not sure what to make of it, but felt drawn to paint it.

It disturbs me how many people don’t know the anatomy of a pen/pencil/brush/stylus/tool of choice when held by an artist. I would have thought this was common knowledge!
There is a tube inside your tool of choice that is filled with art. When you first pick it up for the day, there’s a very small blockage (the red part in the diagram that I have helpfully provided for you) of bad or awkward art that has sunk down and settled near the tip. The only way to get rid of it is to draw it out onto a page/canvas.
Once you do that, you can get to the good art! It’s totally normal. It happens to everyone. That’s why people do warmups before they draw - they know that awkward art is lurking right near the tip, so they’re getting rid of it.
New artists especially seem to not know that it’s there, and sometimes they might think their bad art blockage is never ending, but if you keep drawing, you’ll get to the good art. Sometimes that awkward art blockage can build up a little bit if you go a long time without drawing, too. Just keep going, though. I promise you that you can break through it, if you just keep going.

This is a close-up of the "in my own style" version of Moskintia I did for this project just to show the level of detail I went to with each head study.

Moskintia in the Style of...
Moskintia commissioned me to paint his dragon 13 different ways - 12 in the style of well-known pop culture personalities and one in my own style. Each dragon was freehand-drawn without the use of grids and I tried to stay true to things such as the colour saturation of the original dragons. It has been a -tremendously- fun project and I feel like I've learned a lot from trying out so many different styles. I've been posting my progress on FB and I've had a lot of inquiries from other people wishing to commission this same project, however I'm not entirely sure I could do this over and over without going slightly mad. I may, in the future, offer this again on rare occasion but it would not be a cheap exercise due to the sheer number of hours that go into it.

If you’ve ever wondered just how far apart to put your vanishing points in order to avoid the dreaded “squished” distortion, this is for you. And for me, because I took two college-level perspective classes and was never taught it! Basically it’s working backwards through establishing the “Cone of Vision” to make sure the vanishing points are far enough apart. Gotta have that 90-degree angle down there! Of course it’s much easier in Photoshop to zoom in and enlarge the picture plane after it’s set up, but you can always tack on extra paper if you’re working in pencil, or just do a small sketch to establish your perspective and redraw it larger for detail and finishing later.
Anyway, I hope folks find this as useful as I did once I figured it out!
The muse has been a little quiet lately but I finally painted this image which has been floating around in the back of my mind for months now. Gift art for a friend of his kellashee, Faustorian, sitting atop his little cabin in Alaska watching the Northern Lights.
