todoroki rei suffered and tortured herself for ten years blaming herself for inflicting an incident of terrible violence upon her child, but her rapist and abuser who beat her and children repeatedly, for decades, feels bad for like 3 months and everyone thinks he’s ~conflicted~ and ~deserves redemption~ like LOL

in addition to that, i also feel likes it’s odd how his “redemption” is him being all emotional about his family now and being upset that they resent him, but what exactly is it that he does to redeem himself? people can argue that ‘recognizing he has made mistakes is the first step’ all they want, but he is still out there playing number one hero/symbol of peace without admitting his wrong-doings to the public and actually facing the consequences to his actions. waiting for his family to silently forgive him and never mention the past again is anything but a redemption

ur right. any evidence we’ve seen of change has happened in his head, and it primarily concerns his feelings. any action he’s taken has been minor and that’s while selfishly inserting himself into ‘family’ gatherings; aka, still maintaining that family must revolve around him rather than allowing fuyumi, natsuo, and shouto to be a family without him. natsuo, who was neglected and emotionally abused by him, was the one who had to leave the dinner. natsuo was the one who shouldered the burden of letting dinner be a happy event. the abuser never takes it upon himself to let others be happy, because it may have crossed his mind that they can be happy without him, but he will not allow it.

the narrative forces us to take on the abuser’s perspective, prioritizing his feelings over the feelings of his victims. the storytelling is dominated by his self-pity, as though that amounts to any, demonstrable action to be better and make amends. this is not just a BNHA problem either, because society consistently privileges the feelings of abusers over the very real danger and harm they pose to their victims. survivors are pressured to forgive and move on because apologists are so stirred by the pathetic groveling of an abuser they will sacrifice justice to quell his aching heart, until survivors are themselves gaslit into believing this “real” guilt from the abuser. and then the abuse starts up again, of course.

this is a hard pill to swallow, but anyone who writes stories that prioritize or “delve into” an abuser’s guilty mindset is actively enabling domestic violence. it reinforces the cultural narrative that an abuser’s feelings—not his actions—matter, and that the feelings and safety of his victim absolutely don’t. it places people (usually women) in danger of staying in abusive situations because we’ve hammered into her head this falsehood that he really feels bad. he hits you? he feels bad about it. he rapes you? he feels bad about that too. how could you leave him when he truly deeply feels so bad (until the next time he does it)?

so it really doesn’t matter if rei’s abuser actually “feels bad” or not. it’s insubstantial as to whether or not this narrative enables abuse. real abusers will use those exact words and justifications every day, and they will get their victims to believe and forgive them. “i just want a happy family?” god, how many parents have said that while hitting their children, how many husbands while berating their wives… and thanks to hori, there’s now another story out there that tells survivors their abuser’s guilt is genuine and they definitely will not ever abuse you again.

Yaoyorozu’s privileged insensitivity to the wealth disparity between herself and her classmates is especially egregious given that she knows that Ochako is from a working poor family. As a reminder: Yaomomo could use her quirk to pull stacks of gold bricks out of her body but chooses not to “because it would destabilize the economy.” She has the means to disrupt capitalism but chooses not to, because as a child’s of wealth, she fears that any change in that status quo will undermine her own privilege. Yaoyorozu Momo is a lackey of the bourgeoisie.

The appalling travesty that was BBC’s Sherlock has infested the Sherlock Holmes fandom like a malignant tumour so I want you all to know how awesome the OG literary Holmes was:

The literary Sherlock Holmes was an autistic coded character before people knew what autism was.

The literary Sherlock Holmes was an explicitly aromantic character before people had a word for that.

Literary Holmes solved mysteries not merely for the intellectual stimulation but also out of a genuine desire to do good. He cared deeply about every client. HE WAS NOT A HIGH-FUNCTIONING SOCIOPATH! He could definitely be insensitive and blunt but he was not callous or unfeeling.

Literary Sherlock threatened to beat a guy who was being creepy with his own stepdaughter.

Literary Sherlock learned to grow past his misogyny after a woman outsmarted him.

In particular, he was always respectful to Mrs Hudson, never belittling or talking down to her (the otherwise enjoyable Guy Ritchie films screw this up too). In fact, they got along so well that they were actually a very popular ship back in the day.

Literary Holmes would NEVER call Watson an idiot. He was his only friend who he loved and respected, even if he did get frustrated with him sometimes. He didn’t need to belittle others to feel powerful.

Literary Holmes and Watson broke into a corrupt man’s house and witnessed him being murdered by a woman he was blackmailing. They knew exactly who she was but they let her get away because they were chaotic good like that.

Literary Holmes had HUMILITY: something a smug prig like Steven Moffat will never understand. He could be arrogant but he had a sense of humour and was willing to admit when he was wrong. And he was wrong sometimes because he was a flawed human being, not some gross male power fantasy.

Literary Holmes respected the working class and was often disdainful of the rich. In Victorian England!

Literary Holmes indirectly caused the death of a guy who abused (and implicitly molested) his daughters and he didn’t give a single fuck about it.

At the end of the series, Holmes retires to Sussex to keep bees. Beekeepers are awesome.
