THEY GO BACK AND FORTH , stuck somewhere between friends and enemies, kept apart by a thin string of FOG . it lingers as much as it twists and alters adachi’s own perception ; in thebeginning , he never LIKED OKUMURA . adachi never personally knew him , and yet growing up had left the room for abrand name to settle with roots . whispers were DANGEROUS and shoved into the gaps between students andevenings . adachi had heard his own shareof horror stories picked up of workman’s conditions and the political nonsense thatcame with running a business . and that’sall it was , he thought , originally —— kunikazu okumura was a businessman through and through . one that might as well be the DEVIL himself accordingto some .
muddled thoughts and opinions stacked up over the years makesit almost AWKWARD when they meet . not with a FAKE NAME and a FAKE PERSONALITY , no , but once the name is out into theopen and released back to where it came , kunikazu turns into someone adachi thinks had a strike of MERCY to not truly die . it makes him curious about what exactly happened , and maybe that is the reality for why adachi sticks around as much as hedoes . CURIOSITY WILL BE THEIR DOWNFALL between a detective built upon lies , and a downtrodden man who continues to lookat his own and welcome them in .

now they’re FRIENDS . more than that , in a sense, now that adachi is truly comfortable with someone . similarities blossomedand drifted into a territory he’d rather not entirely face —— something he never did allow himself to have . ( but kunikazudidn’t give him much of an option , did he ? a change of heart is a curious thing . )

now adachi knows him . past a media – influenced façade and nestled into the quiet hum of anapartment . kunikazu okumura is still abusiness man , but thrown into a holesomewhere between being LOST and being MISERABLE . he’s a mess , physical and emotional , but apart of adachi almost finds it admirable . to take on a false name , to turn your fate . ( a change of heart means that he could recognizeit as —— being able to do far more than adachi could have ever done for himself . he’s fond , in his own way . )

Her expression, which had previously been scrunched up just the slightest bit in hesitance, now changed to that of worry. She worried she’d said the wrong thing to him, worried she’d worded her response wrongly; just like she was accusing him of doing. Hypocrite briefly flashed through her mind, and she had to shake her head to banish the word.
“ That’s….I mean…. “
Somehow, his words seemed like lies, though she couldn’t know for sure. The uneasiness she was feeling only increased as she unintentionally started to analyze every word of what he’d said, every movement of his body and his expression as he’d spoken. It was foolish to do, she knew, because doing so would only give her a biased view of whatever it was she was looking for. She could convince herself of anything by doing this, and in this particular kind of situation, it was irrational.
“ Yeah, it really was stupid, like….you’re a cop, right? What were you thinking, letting something like that slip? You know I could report you for it, right? “
Her arm lowered from it’s place in front of her chest, still stiff. With her first now clenched, she was tempted to slap him. Maybe it’d knock some sense into him? It’ only escalate the situation, however; but god was she tempted. The urge felt almost like a defense mechanism trying to kick him. Something inside her was trying to defend herself from him, and she had no idea why. Damn her gut !

maybe he got too COMFORTABLE with her . maybe the word burns on the tip of his tongue , bitter and angry . he could say it might be a lot of things stacked on top of the other , and each one would be WORSE than the last . but he SLIPPED didn’t he ? in a moment of wanting to press and pry . the worst thing for such a situation is that he got the reaction he wanted .

I GUESS SO . ❞ arguable , but adachi would allow it . he’d think there a handful who would fly beneath the radar . though it is not his place to argue , not when a subtle comment snags his attention viper quick . something so HARMLESS still earns the quick tip of lips , kept with the sheepish lilt of a laugh that tangles with his words .
❝ really ? i’d think that people would like to get by without much worry . ❞ NOT EVERYONE WANTS AN EASY LIFE ! WHAT A JOKE ! a snob of a kid stuck in a rich school doesn’t have any room to PREACH to him . a kid stuck on a pedestal had no room to act like he knew . ❝ i mean ... sure , it does , but isn’t it WORSE if you just focus on your work ? it seems to me like it’d get pretty lonely —— and in the end wouldn’t that just make your work suffer more ? ❞

night again , the city sleeps in these back allies , reminding him of the dead . he appreciates the concept of night . of dusk , when the spirits begin to awaken at his feet . when a best friend raises from the ground under his bed to say hello once more . he can feel a familiar pull , a familiar want . it is not the first time he’s been called . cleryc finds himself almost waiting for them , now .
the answer comes just as easy . he steps through a barrier that doesn’t exist . it could be argued the same of him , of his company .
❛ here again.❜ he greets , slow , as mirror is hidden away . familiar diner , familiar booth . the place he first said hello in person . how expected . ❛ watching others. want company?❜
AS ALWAYS , CLERYC SHOWS when adachi sits teetering on the edge of his answer —— that this is going to be the night cleryc won’t make an appearance . just like the last handfuls, adachi has to add this to a steadily growing tally of WRONG . he doesn’t jump when his company speaks , but he does make a face .

he doesn’t have much to say about him ; shinya’s another kid to get himself wrapped up in a world far bigger than he could have expected . stuck in the MIDDLE without even knowing it , trapezing around with a bunch of WASHED UP CRIMINALS . this isn’t a game . a kid with messy hair , too bright , doesn’t stand a chance .
somewhere along the lines adachi can APPRECIATE it . shinya’s cocky . adachi thinks him a loudmouth . he knows where the truth sits , and yet —— even then , along the lines :

part of him wants to keep the WOOL fastened tight over shinya’s eyes. for the selfish thought that he looks up to adachi . the first to do so , openly , to treat him like an extension of family . it allows him a leadership role , a place static and held quick by a belief that adachi does not share , but one that he could accept .
( shinya doesn’t know what he’s done , and isn’t that DANGEROUS ? adachi’s just a cop in his eyes . honest . righteous . a damned hero . he plans on keeping it that way . )

a kiss, pressed brief against brow. like a feather, during a time adachi otherwise pre-occupied with watching others. it's meant to pry, to distract, even. to interrupt thought.

MIGHT AS WELL HAVE BEEN AN ARROW , slung quick and precise into the crack of a wall . the early hours of the morning bring about a certain HONESTY that the sunrise chases away , or that the moon keeps tucked to the shadows . illuminated under cheap lighting and sanctioned to a world arguably separate from reality , adachi’s off balance —— thrown off balance , unsuspecting , by such a simple motion .
cleryc is familiar company . he’s as much a GHOST as adachi is in this damned city —— curling through fog and silhouettes , avoiding people with a slow step , but watching as they retreat to pick them apart . back and forth , again , again . unnoticed . insignificant . cleryc makes adachi feel WELCOMED for once .
but he would trade that feeling off once he’s knocked from thought . cleryc leans back as if nothing happened while adachi struggles for his ground . he blinks . frowns . the goal of such a thing is met in an instant ; adachi is distracted and knocked down from his pedestal , and right back to a tangible plane .
❝ what was that for ? ❞ adachi sits taller and stiff at the shoulders in a feeble attempt to draw himself up . give a second , allow it to pass , and he looks like he’s POUTING more than anything . ❝ i was in the middle of something .❞
