The rules are the same as they used to be. The duels are 1v1 and the winner advances further while the loser stays behind. If the participants tie, however, a battle royale shall proceed to settle the score. I will no longer be taking requests for battles (not that anyone ever requested any, like guys I don't bite ;) ) as I want the tournament to end on the number 75 if it's possible so no more battles than the ones I already put down. Perhaps once the tournament concludes I will allow requests for battle royale between characters as I wish I'd done those more.
DISCLAIMER: Just to let you know, we're voting based on who is a better battler, not a more liked character. Otherwise off with your head!
In response to attention seeker that doesn't seem to take a hint.
Aang's apology simply doesn't actually answer the issue he should be apologizing for. He apologizes for "getting them into this," but that's not what happened, nor is the problem. The problem is that Aang caused this entire mess in the first place. Aang doesn't apologize for that; he instead apologizes like a typical main character hero would apologize for their friends worrying about them, which is not about the main character's remorse or atonement, it's about portraying them as "too good for this world". Aang didn't get the Gaang just involved; he got them killed. Straight-up killed. The problem with Aang is that he kick-started the entire story by trusting Tagah over his friends and lover. When Katara rightfully held him accountable for endangering everyone, he doubled down, and the apology he musters is right after everything went to shit and everyone else has to answer for Aang's mistakes. Aang should've apologized for trusting Tagah blindly and creating the entire situation that led to this disaster. He shouldn't apologize for his friends "getting involved" because it's fundamentally an understatement of what Aang did. Aang didn't apologize for getting his friends killed, as none of his friends got to be upset with Aang over it. Aang didn't apologize for causing this mess, as no one held him directly accountable for it either. He only apologizes for getting his family involved, which isn't the biggest problem here, because really, if he didn't want them to get involved, he shouldn't have opened the Pandora box.
Once again, missing the point of the entire criticism of Aang. It's not about whether or not he's allowed to make mistakes; it's about acknowledging and learning from his mistakes, which Aang fails to do because the narrative fails to allow him to grow as a person by denying him the opportunity to be held accountable. It doesn't matter who Aang is because EVERYONE makes mistakes. One isn't more or less predisposed to making mistakes, but we all have to take accountability and responsibility for them, and Aang fails to take responsibility for his mistakes because the narrative doesn't acknowledge it, and neither does he, which only drives the point further that Aang's remorse is hollow because he isn't apologizing for the very thing he should apologize. Like deadass, Aang's apology is an example of why the word "sorry" is no longer enough for people, because anyone can muster it, but not everyone can mean what they said, or know or care what they're apologizing for. It's really an apology for the sake of apology, not to make amends, to atone, or fix your behavior in the future.
Congratulations on yet again trying to fight the core of the argument with semantics unrelated to the issue Aang should be dealing with. Letting go of the grief he feels isn't the problem Aang should take accountability for, so the lesson rings hollow as once again, the problem is left unaddressed, and the problem is that Aang created a very easily-preventable disaster because he got his own head stuck in his own ass to put it brutally bluntly. "I can't believe I trusted him." Me too, Aang, because while we're at it, many people already acknowledged that Tagah is basically Aang's hama, and the plot of the movie is just Puppetmaster. Like, Aang witnessed and participated in that episode. He already should know that trusting someone who waves red flags is dangerous, even if they're from our culture that was wiped out. Katara's been there, and Aang witnessed it all, yet he somehow didn't learn this lesson? He didn't even consider it and try to work for a solution for the worst-case scenario? Like you'd think a guy would learn after such a disastrous event that traumatized his partner, but no, I guess, Katara's just a special unlucky one.
Aang is so pacifistic and values all life; he totally didn't kill the buzzard wasp in the desert, despite it being no danger to anyone anymore, and he totally didn't threaten to murder Sandbenders in a fit of rage. He totally didn't send an avalanche to Fire Nation soldiers invading the Northern Temple. His methods wouldn't kill Zuko by being thrown around with airbending if Zuko himself wasn't built like a Kryptonian. He totally didn't unleash the Ocean spirit on invading Fire Nation soldiers, which, mind you, was his original plan before settling for wisdom, until going back on it after the Moon got killed. Like, can you read my sarcasm? Because it's not as if Aang didn't have an explanation for doing everything I mentioned, no, what I mentioned isn't entirely a problem on its own. It's about how Aang is being a straight-up hypocrite with no self-awareness, but all the pretense. Aang used violence, he did take lives, he was already past the point where he can say that he can't kill to not betray virtues of Air Nomads because he already did that (or so he thinks, it's not like Gyatso himself didn't in his last moments kill entire squad of Fire Nation soldiers as last resort to save all the other Air Nomads, proving that Air Nomads aren't strictly against killing at all, especially if it's in self-defense) and he still dared to suddenly bring the "I don't kill" card right when he was about to murder the most despicable human being the world has known. The human being that would've killed thousands on a whim, a human being that refuses to change and would not extend the same mercy and grace Aang would ever extend to him, literally the kind of person no one and I mean no one would care that got killed, as the only people who would care are the very people who would be following Ozai blindly, who by no means respect any life for that matter. So yeah, this whole situation does Aang dirty, and it's not a "gotcha" moment you think it is. And regarding the yelling, the narrative actively acknowledged that other characters yelling at each other was wrong and an actual conflict that had to be resolved, but Aang, meanwhile, just fucks off and then is handled with a very magical fix to his demand after throwing a fit. It very much isn't fair.
Both instances you mention are not the narrative acknowledging Aang's flaws; they're Aang beating himself over his shortcomings. Aang feels guilt over running away, but the narrative never tries to portray it as his fault, just something Aang feels guilt and shame over. Ba Sing Se is in the same vein as no one here is blaming Aang for losing at Ba Sing Se. Maybe if Aang acknowledged that he couldn't control the Avatar state at Ba Sing Se, with not just himself wallowing in self-pity about it, but others, in fact, confronting Aang about not making the same mistake, then it can be acknowledged that the narrative does, in fact, hold Aang accountable for his mistakes, but it just doesn't. I mean, heck, I will provide you with a far better example of where the narrative almost held Aang accountable for what he did, but backed away from it. In the episode "Bato of the Water Tribe," once Aang comes clean about hiding the letter and preventing Sokka and Katara from having a chance to reunite with their father (or having a choice in that matter), Sokka rightfully gets upset and decides to leave Aang because of this, and Katara sides with Sokka on this. Now this is actually good, it is the narrative holding Aang accountable, because what he did was wrong, and Sokka had every right to deny helping Aang because of how Aang denied him to reunite with his dad, his family. And of course it sucks extra hard and even justifies Sokka more because he did initially refuse to meet up with his dad for Aang's sake, and Aang, behind his back, prevented him from following through with that choice. The problem is, however, that even though the narrative initially held Aang accountable, it failed to follow through with that lesson. Aang ultimately doesn't understand or learn why what he did was wrong. He just wallows in self-pity and even snarks back about how no one wants him once someone tells him to leave (and very much in a distress tone which reads as a warning, not a demand, which also showcases Aang being actually flippant to other people's feelings and concerns and being focused on his own pain), like you don't see Aang promising to never lie to his friends or prioritise his own wants over others, which is what caused this entire situation in the first place, but he also continues to lie and hide stuff (like he lied about mastering the avatar state for example). Meanwhile, Sokka, on his own, with Bato's advice, decides to forgive Aang and help him out anyway. It's not as if Aang did anything to earn this forgiveness or show how he's learned; it's really just Sokka deciding to be a bigger person about it. So it just does that the narrative will shield Aang from the actual consequences of his actions and have things go his way regardless if it's deserved or not, and Aang himself also won't think twice regarding his mistakes, he will just continue to make them and will only call himself an idiot once it blows up in his face.
Motherfucker Sonam literally praises Aang the second time they talk, which is what Sokkastyles was referring to. Like heck, you don't need to promise us that you will continue to bash Zutara because you're disrespectful, we can tell; this isn't a power move; it's just a brat throwing a tantrum, so there's nothing to be proud of.
"Stop reducing." How about you stop whining for a bit and think critically about what is written. When people say "male hero," they don't mean "hero that happens to be male", they're referencing the power fantasy of a self-insert guy being a hero. Sokka and Zuko aren't blatant self-inserts like Aang is. Katara being considered a "female love interest" is precisely what her role in the narrative is all about, making Aang a hero, rather than letting him truly become one. Like Aang always had the issue that everyone and everything around him always put him in a hero position when he doesn't want to be one, the narrative should allow Aang to organically grow into that role, but he isn't, because he actively refuses to confront the flaws that prevent him from being a true hero at heart, and instead, it is a title. The argument itself you're referring to is about how the male self-inserts yells towards his love interest that happens to be female, in a way that completely disrespects the character. Katara is being disrespected, and the context of the situation of her being a love interest to Aang who is a male self-insert while she's a female simply paints the narrative of misogonystic power imbalance where the guy is being disrespectful, and the female has to take it, a narrative that so many women (which should include you too I suppose) have to go through and feel righteous resentment over it, and the show they're engaging with portraying this very same struggle, and doing nothing about it. It isn't fair either.
So TL;DR: Bringing up semantics to disprove the points while actively ignoring the meaning behind what is said and instead deconstructing it in a way that tries to shame OP, and making it everyone's problem by inappropriate tagging only portrays you as immature, and hurts your cause even further.
Edit: because you decidedded to block me for nothing but ragebait value, I shall add more stuff here, because truly, nothing of your response is of value, but people still need to see it.
I'm pretty certain you're not black, so you don't get the n-pass. Saying Aang apologized for everything is just generous.
You literally do not address the actual point. You're repeating the same "he's a genocide survivor" like it's a "free-out-of-jail" card when very much it isn't. And let's be real, it's genuinely not about Aang and how he has "a hard time forgiving himself", like it's still no excuse to cause harm to others. "You'll never make me hate him" Good thing no one's trying to, because that's also not the point, you're just afraid you're too weak-willed and try to act as if you're righteous and strong, but really you're just pathetic. Literally everyone in the Gaang understood the importance of rebuilding the culture, Katara would know the most as the last bender of the Southern Water Tribe, but even this didn't excuse Aang for getting everyone killed.
Not a girl, and I never said Katara was disrespectful (piss on the poor reading comprehension), Aang was disrespectful towards her because he told her point blank that she could never understand the things he's going through, when she absolutely does as once again, the last Waterbender of the Southern Tribe. The one whose entire culture was also wiped into nothingness, the one who lost her own mother because of the genocidal campaign against her people. Aang and Katara didn't have a disagreement. Aang point-blank told Katara, "You don't understand how I feel," when really, it's he who doesn't understand how SHE feels because he's too busy being absorbed in self-pity yet again.
The person of color in question
Like you will find hundreds of metas that already answer, proving further this case, but you can see it from the get-go, too. Heck, actual Tibetans who Aang is supposed to represent straight-up don't want to claim him because he's caricatural to them.
5. Beautiful description of Hama, but you still think it doesn't apply to Tagah either? Tagah, who is also said to be traumatized by the brutality of the war, went the radical extremist route. It's not about trauma being a math equation; it's about learning from your experience. Aang should've seen how Tagah's treatment of his friends feels condescending, passive-aggressive, and at times pretentious, like Hama comparatively actually played her part well, while Tagah only saved his face during Aang's confrontation, but Katara was already on his ass even without the need to remember what happened with Hama.
Like literally culture preservation shouldn't suddenly lead to no self-preservation as once again, just because Aang grew, doesn't mean he suddenly shouldn't have it in the back of his head that maybe he shouldn't in fact get too excited over prospect of reuniting of someone from his kind to save himself a disappointment in case they fail to live up to the ideals they're supposed to represent. Aang should know by now that what Hama did was because of grief and bitterness, but she still committed terrible acts, and that ultimately, you need to be wary of people regardless of where they come from, as evil can come from everywhere, just like you.
It should also be stated that Aang is a fictional character, he's not a real person, his arc and growth are supposed to be satisfying IS supposed to be linear and consistent. People want to see characters grow and change, and regression is perceived as a negative thing, but Aang himself doesn't even regress; he's literally static, and that's a problem. He's never changing or growing; he's the same as he's ever been.
6. Once again, I already said that Aang had his reasons for being violent. I never said they were good reasons, but reasons. Of course, Aang was spiralling, no shit, Sherlock, but for Aang to not acknowledge his spiral while saying in confidence to Avatar Yangchen that he certainly never took a life is just nothing but a blatant lie. So yes, people ARE pointing out a contradiction, it's just you denying it. It's not about whether Aang likes violence or not; he's still hypocritical for stating he doesn't do violence, yet there were plenty of times where he did, in fact, choose violence, but you never have him have a crisis over it. If Aang truly stood on his principles, then he would admit that he's not perfect, that his record is not clean, but he wants to still live by his virtues, but that's not what happens. Instead, the conflict is about how Aang seemingly never broke his virtues, which just isn't the truth.
And let's be real, you're giving the writers way too much credit regarding this subject than they actually deserve, as you know they didn't nearly put as much thought and effort into it, otherwise they wouldn't have written the finale like that.
7. Holding characters accountable is not about verbally dragging them from mud, but it's about them truly facing the consequences of their actions. Sokka and Katara didn't leave Aang for more than an hour when confronting him about the letter, and it's not like the Gaang ever questions Aang again on whether or not he should be trusted. Aang isn't held responsible for the disaster he caused. Literally, Aang is just not held accountable. Aang wallowing in self-pity is not the narrative holding him accountable; it's the narrative telling us how good Aang is for seeing his mistakes, when he doesn't even do that. He whines and then does the same thing over and over again. He never learns his lesson.
Heck, Aang's guilt over Ba Sing Se is about failing to save the city, when he should also admit to himself that he failed to follow the teachings of the Guru and control the Avatar State properly. If he did, then Azula would not, in fact, kill him mid-transformation, as he wouldn't be in the middle of a transformation (like Aang didn't need a transformation to cause a tidal wave that put out the fire that Ozai caused in the finale).
Mind you, Aang doesn't die, and I don't expect the Gaang to jump him once he wakes up, but at some point, they will ask him to do something about the Avatar State and will confront him about his inability to master it, as it can, in fact, put the entire mission of saving the world in jeopardy. Like you can't leave stuff unaddressed to fester.
8. Aang gets to make selfish decisions and still everything goes his way. That is very much a self-insert behavior because it doesn't matter what you do, you will have what you want regardless. Toph had ONE episode of calling out Aang. So glad you provide no context for why Katara explicitly gets angry with Aang and how the narrative treats it (I might as well say that Aang annoys Katara with how little you have given me). Zuko calling Aang naive is not portrayed by the narrative as the right thing to say, despite Zuko being right. Neither Roku nor Kyoshi criticize Aang for not being decisive; they encourage him to be decisive, while Aang gets pissy over them not validating his inability to commit.
9. Saying Aang's grief is the most important part about him is also generous, as Aang himself doesn't exactly walk himself through that grief. He simply just compartmentalizes it and then procrastinates on answering it. Aang does not have healthy coping mechanisms for his grief, and the show doesn't challenge it, and Aang himself frankly doesn't focus on his issues and tries to grow through them like Katara and Zuko, for example. Aang simply can't be bothered to do shit. It also should be stated that Aang literally has his found family, and they were supposed to help him through his grief, so even if the Air Nomads are gone, they're still there for him, so he's not lonely enough to not consider their word and their well-being. Neither Aang nor the writers have a good grasp on how he should go about his values and his grief, and of course, how could he? He was a kid; he didn't have a perfect understanding of his own culture, just an idealised, basic, kid-friendly version of it.
I find this recent discourse for atla really interesting cuz like look at the end of the day the non canon ship gets more love in fandom typically cuz theres more to explore with it fandom is for what you dont get in canon and all that so historically imo Zutara has dominated in the ship war more people seem to like it. So why the sudden flip?
Well theres been a rise of a respect canon cuz its canon people so that is a factor but i dont think thats the main thing .
I think basically its 2 things
1. There were a bunch of people who heard alot about zutara but hadnt watched avatar or had a long time ago and were not big into fandom who were expecting to see alot more content between Zuko and Katara given the popularity and didnt get it it got over hyped to them when they watched it /rewatched it. And so now fully divorced from the original atla fandom and their experiences the ship doesnt make sense.
You didnt see the voice actors ship it or the creators mention it or even the animation thing where they were all chibi and in school and they made a love pentagon with Zuko Aang katara and the blue spirit who somehow was his own character despite being Zuko.
To be fair you dont have to the source material is enough to interpret things but without that context shippers seem more insane so its a unfair reading of the fan base's attachment to the ship. And of course all all long running fandoms they do start fuelling their interest from fandom more than canon when theres not enough content and it becomes its own thing not really reflective of canon which is fine.
But perhaps some forgot how far theyd deviated from canon in their portrayals while still fueling discourse which both confused those outside the fandom and made them frustrated .
2. They saw the clips of the new movie or all of the new movie and saw Aang as attractive
I don't say this to be dismissive but in fandom it very common that the ships that get popular are with characters who get accepted as attractive or with characters who are considered relatable or are otherwise projected on in some way. Katara Toph Zuko and Sokka were all some combo of this Aang tho wasnt. So Aang ships didnt tend to be as popular outside of the kataang shippers from my experience.
Then we get this poster of Adult Gaang
And this design of Aang in Legend of Korra
And tbh neither were very popular while the other designs were very well received
People hadnt been as curious about adult Aang as a design compared to some other characters (Zuko) so there wasnt a super popular fan design that got latched on to either. So that did not help with the shippability of aang.
But then the movie comes out this the redesign
And people like this look more
And then the movie leaks and people see clips and suddenly
Oh no hes hot now we getting thirst traps
Now you could say hold on now people have made intimate objects and fish and lions and horses redesigned to be hot people.
And thats true.
But there are certain personality types that get those redesigns and they typically aren't the sweet peace loving types.
And now finally in 2026 Aangs shippability is getting a bit of a boom and so the first ship that gets looked at is the one that got the most attention the one that was involved in a ship for over a decade aka kataang.
This is not to say that no one had any Aang ships just that they werent as popular as ships with other members and when they might have been typically.
For example
Aang has just as many parallels and thematic connections with Zuko as Katara does if not more. Their ancestors are linked Katara tried to talk Zuko out of his path in Ba sing Se but Aang tried in S1 when Zuko rescued him in the blue spirit first. Their backstory episodes are told together Aang even cuts ties with Roku in the comics because he suggests Aang might have to kill Zuko.
In many fandoms that kinda thing is the basis of at the very least a very strong friendship that down the line could blossom into a really popular ship that dominates a fandom
Can't really deny that but in spite of that Zukaang didnt get much traction.
And i think it didnt because people just werent that interested in shipping aang at least not the masses but thats changing now and im curious what new ships will now start getting more popularity. Im personally hoping for more aang ships.
I liked zukaang from when I first watched the show, but no, Aang did not try to talk Zuko out of his path in the Blue Spirit episode. Aang asked Zuko if they could have been friends a hundred years ago, while Zuko was unconscious, and was ready to fly away the moment Zuko attacked him. There was never the level of connection and trust there as between Zuko and Katara in the caves, which is also why Aang forgave Zuko more easily when he wanted to join them.
I should have specified this more. They didnt have this long drawn out conversation or anything.
But Aang does see that the guy who busted him out who he just worked together with who just got shot getting him out is in fact Zuko. True his attempt at communication is not as heartfelt or verbose as Kataras but i would say him asking Zuko that question and not splitting after getting him to safety immediately was an attempt at communication.
A much more flawed attempt so very understandable why Katara was more pissed than Aang but still an attempt.
My point was that Zuko aang had moments too the kinda moments that normally get shippers super excited. They had it during the tv show they had it after in the comics. They had it in their themes. The show purposely paralleled them.
In many other fandoms this kinda thing usually is the kinda stuff that makes ships really big. But Zukaang never got that big.
And imo it didnt because Aang historically wasnt very shippable to many in the fandom. But i do think the current fandom especially after this movie sees Aang as more shippable. I should specify like from the movie clips not necessarily the movie itself many havent seen that.
But what you actually said was that Aang and Zuko have just as many connections and thematic parallels as zutara, and they don't. I am saying this as someone who ships both, Aang and Zuko don't have the personal connection that Zuko and Katara have. Aang isn't so much trying to connect to Zuko as he is talking about what he wishes could be in that scene, and I'm not trying to diminish it because I do think it's important, Zuko remembers it and brings it up to Aang when he is trying to join the gaang. But it's not on the same level as Zuko and Katara's moment of forgiveness, trust, and vulnerability in the caves, and they don't have a relationship arc the way zutara has.
I count the multiple clashes as a connection i count the fact that Zuko saved Aangs life in s1 as a connection theres a fixation zuko had on aang and a potential for things to be different aang saw in Zuko as a connection. And thematically of course you have the parallels with theit backstory and the narrative purposely giving you that parallel. You have Zukos journey to join the Avatar involve him discovering his family tree involving Aangs previous life.
That kind of stuff is what shippers obsess over especially in action adventure type series like what Avatar has. True Zutara had the bonding when they trapped together and then Zuko having to redeem himself in Kataras eyes and you have the tag team with Azula of course.
But its fandom we are all working with potential for a good story like say in fan art or a comic here. Especially now the series is now long over and the conversation of what is going to be the canon ship is no longer relevant.
So potential wise id day Zukaang has just as much shipping fuel as Zutara if not more especially if you count the whole thing with Aang cutting off Roku for Zuko. I mean they even have matching scars one in the front one in the back at the exact same spot done by the same person and healed by the same person.
It is hard to get more paralleling themes than that. And thats the kinda thing shippers usually love.
But their popularity is nowhere near Zutara or Zukka despite having all those hallmarks of popular ships. And i think its just cuz Aang has historically been less shippable in the eyes of the fandom.
I dont necessarily expect overnight aang to get the most popular ships or anything now but i am anticipating a bit of a bump in new content in fandom involving shipping him. Which would be nice.
Though as soneone else pointed out Zutara has had more backlash over the years not just from kataang shippers but just like in general and so the current backlash could also be an extension of that. But i still maintain that Aang being seen as shippable by more people still contributed.
Although i have to ask i only got on board with Zuko aang very recently but what do you mean they dont have a relationship arc ?
They go from Zuko being obsessed with killing Aang in S1 to being besties by the end of the show. And he might have targetted the whole squad but he did because of Aang.
If Katara and Sokka weren't affiliated with the Avatar he wouldn't have bothered with them So i do still consider that a specific thing for Aang and Zuko when Aang personally starts out as the object of Zukos obsession.
I mean my originsl post was not really about zutara vs zukaang but rather just fandom trends using the lack of popularity zukaang has than one might expect .
Sorry if this isnt how you mean it but it kinda sounds like while you like both ships you think Zutara has more shipping fuel behind it and has more validity. So you are latching on to anything in my original post that might suggest otherwise. In which case i wanna say right now i really dont want to start a which ship deserves to be acknowledged more debate. That really wasnt the point of this post.
The thing is, you are the one starting the "which ship deserves to be acknowledged" debate. You said zukaang has just as much if not more shipping potential. You are the one making the comparison.
And if every time they clash counts, zutara has that, too. If thematic parallels count, zutara has that and it's acknowledged more by the narrative than the Zuko/Aang parallels, which are honestly under-explored in the show.
A relationship arc is where the characters have a relationship that develops over the course of a story. Zuko and Katara have that because they start out as enemies, then potential allies, then reluctant (on Katara's part) allies while Zuko works to gain Katara's forgiveness. This is also worked into both their character arcs, Zuko's redemption arc and Katara's arc of gaining agency and resolving her conflict between idealism/cynicism. Then they spend the climax of both their stories together, defeating Azula, who acts as a foil to both of them, but in different ways.
Aang and Zuko don't have an arc. They are enemies for most of the show, then they become friends, but they don't have a relationship that develops or grows over time. Aang's "we could have been friends" speech establishes them as foils and parallels, but that idea is not developed enough in the story and it's not a moment of real connection between them like Zuko and Katara's moment in the caves when they talk to each other, rather than one monologuing to an unconscious other. Ditto for Zuko's monologue to an unconscious Aang at the North Pole. In order for it to be an arc, these ideas would need to be repeated throughout the story. Zuko does bring up Aang saying they could have been friends, but it's not a huge motivation for joining the gaang, just something he mentions off-handedly. It's significant that he remembered it, but the narrative does not give it the importance that is given to, for example, Zuko trying to get Katara's forgiveness.
And while Zuko obsesses over Aang, it's not Aang as a person that is important to him. Imagine the story if what Zuko needed to find to get home was not the Avatar, but like, a magical amulet. The story would be much the same.
Now, you COULD write a narrative where one character starts out as only important to another for what they represent, but then as they get to know the other as a person, they become important. But that isn't zukaang. Zuko doesn't get to know Aang before deciding to join him. His redemption arc happens largely independent of Aang and he develops a friendship with Aang as a result, but it's not an arc that develops with the narrative.
And the parallel scars thing is never actually acknowledged by the narrative. Zuko's chest scar is not even present in the most recent movie.
There is a lot that COULD have been done with zukaang, but honestly, the narrative drops the ball on it. And I'm saying that as someone who likes zukaang. There is a reason why zutara has become so insanely popular, and that's because their relationship is just that well-written.
There are a lot of points in the show where I think the writers wanted to go for a zukaang parallel, but were lazy with it. Like when Aang says he needs to regain his honor after Azula killed him. It's a clear attempt at a parallel. Except we don't see any of that. We don't see what that time that the world thought Aang was dead actually meant, we don't see Aang change because of this need to regain his honor. We see Zuko changing and growing, we see Katara changing and growing, and we see their effect on each other, but we don't see the same work put in for Aang. The show does a lot of telling instead of showing with his character. That's also a big reason why he's not as shippable.
And that's okay! Not all ships have to have strong thematic parallels. A lot of the appeal of zukaang is headcanon for me because the show doesn't do enough of the heavy lifting. Which is just as valid a way to engage in shipping. But I did object to you trying to compare zukaang and zutara in order to prop up zukaang in the first place.
Yes exaxtly theres alot that could happen based on threads that canon started and didnt flesh out that is litetally the bread and butter of fandom especially older fandoms where sticking close to canon has been more exhausted for fan content possibilities and so newer potentials start gaining traction rare pairs start gaining traction. Which you already see happening with Zukka being so popular. It makes sense since the og show ended over a decade ago.
As for themes yes it is there they put it in. You dont need a line telling you by the way zuko and and aang have matching scars created by Azula. Its the very definition of show dont tell. The movie is a leak its possible they would have added it for the official release and even if the current creators overlooking it doesnt mean it had no significance in the og series.
They dont have parallels when Zuko and Aangs backstories are told in the same episodes intercut with each other? Aang and Zuko weren't a strong connection when Zuko finds a way forward by finding out he has the potential to be good by showing his connection to the avatar? So what if was in a trance Zuko venting in the presence of the avatar isnt significant? The guy hes supposed to bring in?
Why are these themes and moments not significant to you?
And if they arent to you and are to me then perhaps you might consider that what you consider weaker themes that dont count as significant might not be as cut and dry as you label them.
But lets ignore all that
Cuz none of my post is really about the true canon potential for any ship or even whats important in canon
But the fandom potential for it and in fandom Aang and Zukos set up is imo the type that typically attracts alot of shippers.
True it wouldnt really while the show was airing not when it lacks the intensity something like Zutara would be more popular then but 16 years later?
Yes definetly now you are looking for good potentials good set ups that didnt get explored as much as you would like or even entertaining set ups that didnt get explored as much as you would like. That would typically be a kind of ship that would take off in fandom zuko aang i mean. Its why imo Zukka took off in 2020 6 years ago and is still popular.
But despite those trends Zukaang had it didnt also take off and imo it was cuz aang just wasnt as shippable then. Tbh he still isnt now but he is more shippable than he was in 2020.
The connections and themes you are overlooking as not that deep or not that strong because its not followed through on is also true for zuko Katara you dont get to see them bouce off each other after ba sing se until Zuko joins up with them in the last season but he's not spending all that time with her.
But having one off episodes with them there is not these seasons of build up between katara and zuko there. Before ba sing se the stuff between Zuko and katara should then be as shallow as the stuff between zuko and aang. Its just all a part of Zukos obsession to get to the avatar then.
But zuko has one obsession for 3 seasons and its the avatar not Katara how is that the basis of shipping?
As for canon ....this wasnt about canon it was about the kinda thing that appeals to people in fandom especially long running fandoms.
I said Zukaang has just as much potential in terms of the kinda trends that happen in fandom that people latch on to.
Not zukaang as just as much potential to be a canon couple. But that was never the conversation and yet somehow the conversation keeps coming here. Its completely irrelevant kataang is already canon and unless you ship it and want to create content about it that doesnt matter in the fan content made.
What is popular in fandom and what was teased the most in canon are not always the same thing over time especially a fandom that isn't as dominantly focused on one ship.
For example supernatural fandom was super into destiel it kinda defined alot of that fan content. But MCU didnt have the same level of commitment to one ship so over time the top ships fluctuated. That doesnt mean of course that the old popular ships dissappeared but new ones entered the picture and shared that spotlight more. Including many ships that didnt have hope of becoming canon.
Atla is more like MCU than Supernatural. But I think with even more potential for fluctuation.
Like we are having 2 seperate conversations im talking fandom trends in a old fandom that is no longer soley taking inspo from just canon but rather maybe from other parts of fandom. And you are talking about potential in the original source material.
For the last few years on Ao3 Zutara and Zukka have been basically top 2 contenders for ships with very close numbers. Canon wise arguably it doesnt make sense for Zukka to be that popular. They dont have the basis Zutara has. Not to shade Zukka or anything I love the ship. But it was a ship that started on fun and vibes not looking and the canon super closely.
But that doesnt matter because this isnt canon. Fandom wise tho zukka is a popular dynsmic that gets shippers excited especially in older fandoms when looking back to source material all the time is less popular. It is unsurprising it fits the trends.
But so does Zuko and Aang but they didnt take off aka the entire point of my original post. Not in the sense of oh no why is Zukaang not liked its my my fav ship ( its not actually) but in the sense of its interesting that its not when typically a ship like that is liked lets examine
Why are these themes and moments not significant to you?
Well, because Zuko's ancestral connection to Roku being a motive for him being good is one of the weakest aspects of his redemption. At that point, Zuko had already known that he had made the wrong decision and was on his way to redemption. The rest could have happened very easily without his connection to Roku. In fact, many fans feel that it cheapens Zuko's redemption because it makes it about Zuko's innate goodness instead of what Iroh had been telling him about how he needs to choose what's right (a motif that is also present in what Zuko says to Katara in the caves, and a much stronger theme in Zuko's redemption.)
The parallels between Aang and Zuko in "The Storm" are also undercut by Aang not having to face actual consequences for people blaming him for running away (because Katara shields him from them) while Zuko actually ends up learning a lesson in that same episode and changing for the better. This is what I mean when I say the show doesn't follow through with the parallels it sets up between Aang and Zuko.
And while fandom is about possibilities, there's also much more to work with when the characters already have a well-written connection, and that's one reason zutara is more popular. You keep saying you want to know why zutara is more popular, yet you don't accept the answer.
Perhaps YOU might consider that what you think about these ships is not cut and dry, and zutara is more popular because it just has much more potential?
Watching people try to defend Zutara is like watching flat earthers defend their theories. (seriously though you guys need to move on this is not healthy.)
ROFL Katara and Aang have like 95 grandkids and people are still convinced that Zutara could magically fall out of the sky. We have confirmation that Sokka thinks Zuko is attractive.
That’s more than zutara has gotten in the span of 20+ years ROFL. Besides I was half joking when I said. At least I spread false info with articles about how “Bryke really did want Zutara to happen the network just wouldn’t let em!” Ship zutara all you want, but stop clinging onto the hope that zutara will be canon. It will never happen.
I don't know where you got your nonsense about Zutara fans being convinced that Zutara will one day be canon. You're making something up that doesn't exist, just so you can annoy us and feel entitled. 😑
And if you want to play the "who has more material" game between Sukka and Zutara... the entire original show have more romantic subtext for Zutara than Sukka ever did (simply because Zutara was a possibility considered in the writers' room, and therefore there are some traces of it in the show itself)? And actually, Sukka never had any romantic subtext at all in the original show?
Oh yeah... It's definitely a crime that the Zutaras don't care about the opinions of a guy who openly bullied people in public for making Zutara fan art. And It's also certain that Bryke, who isn't the only one in the writers' room, will know precisely about subtext he didn't write and don't like!
Watching people try to defend Zutara is like watching flat earthers defend their theories. (seriously though you guys need to move on this is not healthy.)
Making this post gave me enough entertainment to last me a thousand lifetimes. My skin is clear, the laundry is complete and I got my paycheck. I will tell this story to my children's children. This will be my legacy.
Honestly, the saddest statement to make here. Like if this is the thing that satisfies you then I do pity you, as it is pretty sad, but then again, since thos is supposed to last you a thousand lifetimes then good for you I guess?
Um. Okay. That's really your problem, now isn't it. I made a joke about an overrated ship and you guys are over here acting like I insulted the pope. So yeah, this is peak entertainment for me, and you're making it 10 times easier. You can feel sorry me all you want, because I never will. I'm not sorry for what I said, and if anything, you guys have proven my point; I made stupid post about Zutara fans fight tooth and nail to prove their ship is relevant...and you guys are doing exactly that. Also, how many times to have to respond to you guys for you figure out that I literally couldn't give a rats behind about what you say to or about me. You guys are the ones who decided to make a mountain out of molehill over a tumblr post made by a person with 0 followers. How could I NOT find this train wreck of a circus amusing.
What you did is bait and troll and take pleasure in people being rightfully upset. It's not our problem when you're being a dick. Would you like me to come into your house and call your loved one ugly? I doubt that. And you downplaying shipping doesn't mean you're right, it means you're a fun police masquerading as a jester. Shippers want to have fun, yet you're opposed to it for "reasons". "You can feel sorry for me all you want, because I never will", and that's supposed to be a flex? A power move of sorts? Like you're telling me you have 0 followers and 0 people in your corner, and that's somehow a good thing, for you specifically? We're not making a mountain out of the anthill; we're in the middle of a never-ending shipping war caused by jerks like you, and you may not care but it's only more pathetic on your part because we actually care, we love what we stand for and we do have a point, and someone trying to get attention by putting us down doesn't actually phase us, if anything it only gives us opportunity to flex and prove how antis are beyond stupid and childish validating us, while the only validation you get is from someone noticing you, which screams desperate. No one likes trolls, and we gladly will make a spectacle out of you, and it's not just Zuatara shippers who would do that. You can act nonchalant all you want, but without our attention, you clearly have nothing better going on in your life, and it's obvious it won't sustain you for long.
For someone not giving a rat's ass, you gave me a whole 4 paragraphs. Like, you genuinely can't expect me to believe that you seemingly don't care while putting this much effort.
"None of this matters." Quite the opposite, if none of it mattered, it would never last this long, but it matters to people, including you, because you're here this invested.
You talk about having 0 influence, but I don't think you even understand how influence works, as anyone can affect it. Many people who have influence are just vocal and loud, and that's how they got their attention and influence, despite having nothing of value to give. You can say you have 0 followers, but by putting yourself out there, you can gain people to fight for your cause, or, as proven in this post, against it too.
"Why are you paying attention to me after I specifically made you pay attention to me?" You think you're slick?
What we have to gain by putting you down and calling you out is how many people will see your behavior and condemn it, and by default associate it with communities that explicitly act this way. People know you ship Zukka, so they will call Zukka shippers as bad as you, because they know there's a connection and therefore association. This further fuels the conflict, making your side look ridiculous to the point that some people will try to prove you wrong just out of spite. I mean, heck, I don't even bother arguing for Zutara, I'm here to call your ass out.
And it's harder to act nonchalant when you have the world against you, as sooner or later, the people who seemingly were on your side would be discouraged from following you further, and those who oppose you would feel even more vindicated at every step you slip up. You get what you deserve; you have to deal with the world's pettiness, so expect it to return to you, rather than being defensive about it.
We're not going to be quiet because people like you shouldn't feel able to silence us. After all, you can't do that. For every loud, stupid line you throw, we will throw back louder and more meaningful lines to counter it, especially in times when ignorant people prosper at the expense of everyone else, and especially invade even our escapism spaces.
You aren't sorry for anything, no need to lie. You don't have to spin this around as if you became enlightened by this experience. You don't have to act as if you would fix your mistakes, as you would do without responding. You don't even need to say how you would relate to us not believing you and calling you an arsehole after acting as one. You came to be mean and pretend to act as if you're unbothered by people slapping back. For the record, it's not that difficult to get into debates, and not getting into any for 10 years is a choice and not a circumstance. What you did just do is vile, to put it simply, and you downplaying it means nothing, as many wicked people will downplay their own actions, and those who do hold them accountable couldn't care less about that, because everyone will tell you it's just wrong.

information for both opponents under the cut to those who don't know what they can do in their battle:
Oh boy, here we arrive at the battle of the century and probably the most anticipated battle of this tournament that could even be worthy of being the final battle. Kinda sucks it has to be the second round but I already postponed it from the first round so it's already overdue. Without further updo, let's get into this battle and see for ourselves what happens here.
Now, unlike battles of the first round, here I will just post links instead of expositions as they would be too long and wouldn't fit all pictures here, but I will write here at least some details regarding both opponents.
During this battle, both of them are allowed to use their Palismen.
Amity Blight
Amity doesn't necessarily know if she can truly do it. After everything they've been through, it does pain her to face her childhood friend after just rekindling their relationship and having to be terrible to her her entire life. Her heart isn't entirely in it because of that. But at the same time, she's come to realise how much Willow flourished and grew and how she's not helpless, a broken soul she once knew and she wants to do her justice, she wants to give her the duel she deserves, without patronizing her skill anymore. She also promised Luz she would meet her in the finals and she wants to keep that promise, even if it means she has to defeat Willow, but can she bring herself to do that?
Amity may not possess as much raw power and brutal strength as Willow, but she compensates for it with her skill and creativity when it comes to the usage of her abominations. Both of them are capable, talented warriors, and Amity possesses an ambitious streak and pragmatic poise that helps her dominate the battlefield. Her abominations proved in LR to be able to block Willow's vines and slow down their rampage, and her fire spell could burn through Willow's plants. Granted during this battle Willow is on offense and Amity's foundation is shaken meaning she fights mostly defensively in this battle unlike offensively as she did in the first round.
However, if Amity recognizes how both she and Willow are approaching this battle with the wrong mindset, she could reach out to her and assure her that she believes in Willow, that there are no hard feelings, and that the past is in the past. This could allow her to get the second wind and give Willow the battle she deserves while also letting Willow control her powers better.
Willow Park
Willow knew this would happen sooner or later and she was looking forward to it. She's not necessarily happy, she knows she has to do it if she really wants to win this tournament. Unlike Amity, however, she's not this pained to fight Amity as she waited a long time to actually get her comeuppance after everything Amity. Not that she holds a grudge against her best friend anymore, after all, Willow's strength enhanced because she rekindled her friendship with Amity, but Willow really wants to prove to her one more time that yes, they're equal, and yes Willow is capable of winning this tournament and she's not going down easily and she would never be pushed around by Amity again for being "too weak". Willow has the drive, determination, and ambition to win this tournament and be declared the most powerful teenage witch of the Isles now that she has a chance to prove it.
Amity as far as Willow remembers always looked down on her and hardly knew how capable she was until LR. So she's willing to go all out and reveal now all her tricks so Amity sees it for herself, even if at a disadvantage. She's putting everything she has on the table whether or not Amity already knows about her tricks, and she may not for all we know. In the same vein because Willow is putting everything into this fight to defeat Willow she may at times overcommit and she could most likely make strategic errors, even though she knows what to expect from Amity and does try to play her cards smartly, but her desire to win could potentially blind her to be outsmarted if she acts too reckless and is not careful enough in the name of proving her own strength Willow is on offense during this battle but has a very strong defense as well.
While Willow has great control over her powers, there is a possibility she could lose control if the emotions during this battle (especially knowing what is at stake for her) are too intense and the plant magic could act against Willow as well.
THE FINAL SEMI-FINALS OF WITCHES DUELS - Battle 70 - Willow Park vs Hunter The Golden Guard
Disclaimer: This is not a popularity contest or which character you prefer; in this tournament, you decide who is stronger/better/smarter/etc. opponent.
Extra disclaimer: Obligatory: leave your headcanons behind, pick characters by how strong and competent they're in canon, and no fan-made dynamics like girlboss x malewife. While I won't shame you for headcanons like this, I still want both of them to be treated fairly. Don't make Willow win because Hunter is weak; for example, it's not empowering. Also, a brief reminder that this battle, while called semi-finals, also shall decide whether or not Willow wins the entire tournament in this match-up, making it her final battle, or if someone else will still have a chance to claim the number one spot if she either ties or loses.
Who wins this battle (who is stronger, not more beloved)

Information for both opponents under the cut to those who don't know what they can do in their battle:
Because of how lengthy both of their profiles are, I won't be getting into deeper details on what they can do and will just put links in their names:
Willow Park:
Willow Park is a prodigy in plant magic. Only a few can match her talent and raw power when it comes to her command over plant life. She's also very knowledgeable when it comes to botany and is very promising in this area (she knows how to tame various plants and what they are capable of). However, her capabilities only extend to plant magic and not other types of magic.
Willow Park is also very strong, athletic, and sporty. She's the Captain of Flyer Derby Emerald Entrails and managed to defeat the captain of the Grudgby team, Boscha, while playing Grudgby for the first time. It is known that Willow works out and shows a lot of physical strength. The girl knows how to pack a punch.
Willow and Hunter are an unofficial item. Yes, they have feelings for each other, yes, they are aware of each other's feelings, but their relationship status is not official in canon. What is certain though that those two absolutely love each other platonically and romantically. Willow is absolutely overjoyed to have a chance to have her own duel date with Hunter at long last, though she can't help but admit that she does wish the circumstances were much more clearer as she knows Hunter is in this weird position where he doesn't feel like he properly earned the spot in the final battle and being responsible for the battle not being considered the final battle officially anymore. She doesn't hold it against him; she's just glad to have this chance after everything they've been through. Willow does not intend to go easy on Hunter and hit him with everything she's got because she knows Hunter is strong and she knows she herself is strong too, so no point in underplaying each other. They've proven to everyone they're no half-witches being this high in the tournament, and they shall both aim for gold.
Willow possesses a palisman and is quite capable when it comes to staff wielding. Also, as captain of the flyer derby, she's a very proficient and quite skilled flyer. Being capable of flying traditionally and switching midair to surfing. She is also capable of using her staff to enhance her already very potent magic.
Willow's magic is enhanced by her emotional state. If she's confident in herself, she's most in control; however, if she's bottling up her feelings or feeling insecure, her magic can turn against her. Her magic also gets stronger once she uses anger and determination to power it.
Hunter The Golden Guard:
Hunter "Insert your preferred surname/s for him", also known as a former and the youngest Golden Guard in history, head of the Emperor's Coven, and Emperor Belos's right-hand man. One must know that, unlike other contestants (aside from Luz), he's not constricted to specific covens and tracks since, as a former leader of the coven that allows all kinds of magic, Hunter will have expertise in all types of coven magic as well, and he's also very dedicated to studying wild magic.
Willow and Hunter are an unofficial item. Yes, they have feelings for each other, yes, they are aware of each other's feelings, but their relationship status is not official in canon. What is certain though that those two absolutely love each other platonically and romantically. Hunter admittedly is not in his perfect condition mentally after what happened during his duel with Amity and battle royale, and even his battle with Luz still. He feels like he indeed hasn't proved that he deserved to compete for the first placement in the tournament, and now he's jeopardizing Willow's chance at the championship for nothing. Willow does, however, reassure him that she's glad to battle him, so she requested that he hit her with everything he's got and not hold back, and he wants to at least honor this wish.
Hunter himself was also known as a genius teen prodigy and is undeniably a child soldier who was raised by both hell and the library to get to the very top. While he was born magicless, it did not stop him from earning his title as the right-hand man of the most powerful witch of the Boiling Isles. Hunter spends days and nights both training and learning everything about magic, both as a duty and as fun. He's incredibly knowledgeable regarding all kinds of magic, meaning it's hard to actually surprise him with anything. And since he's a child soldier raised in a magical military with no magic by himself, Hunter had to survive hell even worse than some of the adults that were also part of this coven went through, and he survived it all. Hunter has already been to countless witches' duels beforehand, he made it several times through a maze full of traps, and judging by how he calls getting from the top to the bottom of the mountain alive "a classic", this might as well suggest that this Hunter's version of "summer camp", as he did that numerous times and he considers it "fond memories". Hunter, without a doubt, has the most experience among all participants when it comes to battling because you know Belos never gave him a break or easy time, and for Hunter to be where he is today is all thanks to his own strength, intelligence, and resilience.
Hunter certainly has one of the strongest wills among all characters in TOH, as despite going through a ridiculous amount of pain, he is capable of brushing it off and pushing forward, with his only weakness being Belos. Hunter's willpower was even able to withstand Gus's trauma bubble, which specifically puts you through your worst memories and even renders you useless. Still, Hunter resisted its effect and calmed Gus down instead, despite his pain being very fresh and severe and Hunter in fact not being ok with it, but Hunter keeps on going anyway. One must know it's very hard to break him; trust Belos, he tried but failed. Hunter even managed to resist Belos's possession for some time, which is a lot considering Belos was his abuser and had power over him metaphorically and physically in that moment.
Hunter displayed throughout the series to have some great athletic skills and agility, being able to keep up pace with running Luz without breaking a sweat, while proving he has experience in parkour and acrobatics as seen in him flying on staff. Certainly, he can use his skills to evade incoming attacks with his reflexes while keeping up with his opponents and closing the distance between himself and his enemies. He also has plenty of brute strength at his disposal, considering he managed to shatter falling debris by just swinging his staff in one hand.
Hand-To-Hand Combat - Hunter has proven to be efficient in hand-to-hand combat throughout the series. While Hunter overall plays more on defense as a protector rather than offense, he is not afraid to throw a punch. This post goes more in-depth about Hunter's proficiency in staff-wielding, but I will explain some of it here, too. Hunter, as a trained soldier and experienced martial artist, has his body be his weapon. He knows how the body works and has great control over it. He defeated both Luz and Eda in his debut with a quick kick while evading their attack, straight-up toyed with Kikimora, and had to be put to sleep to be restrained by coven scouts as he was still fighting and kicking. This also gives him a huge advantage against other competitors who are used to fighting across distance, whereas Hunter fights at a close range.
Back in EC, Hunter learned how to be smart, resourceful, and strong, and as I've mentioned before multiple times, he's a child soldier. His opponents usually underestimate him, but he's not the one to be crossed. His victories compromise of defeating Eda and Luz on 2v1 in his debut; immediately defeating Luz in HP once he's recovered; defeating Kikimora in HP; and Tying with Amity in EL after being physically and mentally exhausted, in 2v1 with King (who was rather defeated by Hunter in this duel), while wielding a completely new staff and restraining himself to not kill her but just getting the key; winning flyer derby game on his first try; catching Darius off-guard (which is a feat with Darius's great reflexes); making a strong glyph combo on his very first try; resisting Gus's trauma bubble; kicking ass during Hexside against EC battle; he was defeated twice by coven scouts, which while fair, was also due to his poor condition and the second time he had to be put to sleep to be restrained; handling abomatons and scouts with rest of the Hexsquad during S2 finale; standing his ground and protecting Hexsquad from Belos while being severely weakened in KT; breaking through Willow's vines in FtF with his freshly awakened powers.
Hunter is now submerged with Flapjack, meaning he does not require staff anymore to cast spells, as magic now comes from within. What's more, I allow Hunter to also levitate/fly without the help of any staff. This is more of a fanon ability, but it's supposed to connect him to having the powers of a palisman (but no, he can't turn into a staff, nor is wooden) and abilities of a palisman are usually just enhanced abilities of the holder, meaning flight is in capacity of any witch, but all of them utilise staff since flight on its own is probably hard spell to pull off, but Hunter should do just fine for the sake of this tournament.
And now, finally, let's talk about his staff. For the purposes of this tournament, I will give Hunter Waffles. You know Hunter is the best staff wielder in the entire tournament, only rivaled by Luz. I already mentioned how Hunter is absolutely proficient with his staff, utilizing it for both offensive and very effective strikes and flawless defense. Hunter is also a real aerial ace capable of flying at high speeds with agility to dodge attacks, and is capable of even surfing on his staff, as demonstrated when he showed off in ASIAS. His flying skills were also decisive in both forming EE and winning their very first game together.
Willow Park
Hunter Toh

SEMI-FINALS OF WITCHES DUELS - Battle 69 - Battle Royale: Amity Blight vs Luz Noceda vs Hunter Deamonne
Disclaimer: This is not a popularity contest or which character you prefer. In this tournament, you decide who is stronger/better/smarter/etc. opponent.
Extra Disclaimer: It should be noted that this is a three-way battle royale, not Lumity vs Hunter. Luz and Hunter are also supposed to fight each other. While I'd prefer no ties, considering all pairings had already battled one another, I'll explain what happens if there's a tie between any pair (there's no 3-way tie with me involved in voting; my vote would be discounted if this were to happen). If Amity and Luz tie, Luz takes victory as she won their personal duel; If Amity and Hunter tie, Amity takes victory as she won their personal duel; If Luz and Hunter tie, this specifically depends on Amity's placement in the votes, if she's ahead both of them Luz wins, if she's behind both of them, Hunter wins, this is due to Luz and Hunter having almost a tie in their personal battle.

The timeline of this battle happens between the final battle with Belos and the epilogue, meaning Hunter and Amity are FRIENDS. There is no bad blood between them anymore as they were living in Noceda's household for months with no issues whatsoever, and they assisted one another plenty of times. Hunter never hated Amity or had any real issues with her in the first place, and there is no canon rivalry between them (you can still include headcanons of them being rivals of course, but they must be RIVALS, no "Amity's bullying Hunter", no "Amity and Hunter have beef", no "typical in-laws behavior" (perhaps if you make them just siblings or stepsiblings then I'd allow pettiness be involved), no "Amity mistrusts Hunter" I want none of that). I am sincerely done with misconceptions that surround those two, so please restrain yourself from bringing them to MY blog. Hunter and Amity are friends, but while there is no bad blood between them, Hunter does feel bad about how the last time they battled, his performance was incredibly poor and incredibly unfair towards Amity, so This time, he is willing to make it up to her by actually giving his best shot in their official witches' duel. Hunter is extra motivated to win fair and square and put everything out there because he knows that if he loses to Amity here, his battle with Willow will no longer matter as the grand finale of this tournament, and his victory against Luz in their battle would be considered fraudulent.
Hunter has defeated Luz with no effort every time they battled, and after getting to know Luz long enough, he now knows all of her potential tricks and tactics even more so. Hunter recognizes both strengths and weaknesses of Luz. he knows how reckless yet talented she can be, what her spells and tricks and how they work. Since he was a trained soldier, he knows how to exploit her weaknesses and what's the best way to counter her strengths. On one hand, Hunter knows Luz takes this seriously and she shouldn't be taken too lightly, but he can't help it considering how effortlessly he managed to fight her off previously and how Luz still makes at times similar mistakes. Nonetheless, he is willing to give her the fight of her life.
NEW CONTEXT: Hunter lost their last battle, which threatens his position in ranks as he now isn't even sure if he earned his final battle, feeling like he cheated Willow in how they were supposed to meet in the finals and questioning whether his victory against Luz was earned, so now he's extra determined to prove himself. Hunter knows that out of everyone in this fight, he's the only one who can still potentially have a shot at winning the entire game, too, so he's not going to let this chance get away from his grasp.
Hunter himself was also known as a genius teen prodigy and is undeniably a child soldier who was raised by both hell and the library to get to the very top. Amity Blight:
Amity Blight naturally specializes in Abomination Magic the most, but she knows spells of other tracks like Plants and Illusion, but it's very limited.
The timeline of this battle happens between the final battle with Belos and the epilogue, meaning Hunter and Amity are FRIENDS. There is no bad blood between them anymore as they were living in Noceda's household for months with no issues whatsoever, and they assisted one another plenty of times. Amity doesn't hate Hunter and there is no canonical rivalry between them (you can still include headcanons of them being rivals of course, but they must be RIVALS, no "Amity's bullying Hunter", no "Amity and Hunter have beef", no "typical in-laws behavior" (perhaps if you make them just siblings or stepsiblings then I'd allow pettiness to be involved), no "Amity mistrusts Hunter" I want none of that). I am sincerely done with misconceptions that surround those two, so please restrain yourself from bringing them to MY blog. As I was saying, those two are friends, and yes, they did fight before, and Amity does acknowledge it. However, Amity acknowledges how the fight between them the last time was in no way fair, so this time, she's actually willing to make this fight clear between both of them (no help from King, no picking on him at his worst, fighting him only at his best). Amity does not hold a grudge over what happened last time, but she still acknowledges that last time even with Hunter not being in his best mental state STILL gave her run for her money, so this time around she's not holding back because she knows that otherwise, she won't have any chances of winning and the blame will be solely on her. Amity is currently motivated to fight for both her high placement in the tournament and for Luz's sake, considering how disappointing Luz's battle with Hunter was.
Amity and Luz are girlfriends who love each other very much, and by the time of this tournament, their relationship is as strong as ever. They both promised each other to meet in the finals, and Amity is more than happy that she managed to keep her promise despite the odds. Nonetheless, both girls are having fun and flexing and don't necessarily have a clear desire to win. Their battle is a dance, and the winner gets the kisses 💜💜💜
NEW CONTEXT: Amity knows she's THIS close to getting second place, and she still wants to take her chance. Sure, she won't be mad if she still places third, but she sure doesn't want to give up podium after defeating Hunter fair and square.
Amity is a very skilled, talented, cool-headed, and pragmatic fighter. Hardly does she lose composure when battling even strong opponents, displaying plenty of agility and athleticism (as shown in her battle with Hunter and Grom, which is also given considering she was a former captain of the grudgby team at Hexside), and can be both a powerhouse using plenty of strength or a mastermind coming up with tricks on the fly while outsmarting her opponents with her skillset. Very dangerous, and even more so once she puts more passion into her battle. Hardly there are any weak spots or flaws in her battling style, but she can still be overpowered. Abomination Magic, in particular, feels to be weaker than Construction Magic, for example, and it can be rendered useless when dealing in an environment with no mud. Granted, Amity holds abomination goo with her, so at most, she's going to be weakened. Amity is capable of controlling any slime or mud she comes in contact with.
Amity does wield a Palisman named Ghost and according to herself, she's a "safe flyer". This means she's overall pretty proficient and skilled in her flying capabilities, but at the same time, it means she's not a real aerial ace like Luz or Hunter for example. She's skilled enough to not easily fall off by herself, but as proven in her battles with Hunter (both EL and TTT), she's not fast enough to necessarily avoid being hit in midair. Granted she can still be faster than average and have better reflexes than average, but still not enough to beat some real aerial aces. She is proficient in staff-wielding, being capable of using it to enhance her own spells.
Luz Noceda:
Here are the links to three separate character profile pages for Luz, as she just has this many. Here you go
Luz and Amity are girlfriends, and their relationship is healthy and stable at the moment of this tournament. They're both enjoying themselves here without the care of who wins and who loses because both of them are the queens who are winning, making this battle an absolute delight, very cheesy and very sappy, and very adorable. You'll get diabetes. No drama whatsoever, just having fun sparring with her girlfriend with everyone watching, cause why not? Yes, they're gay💅, keep scrolling.
Luz has never won against Hunter every time they battled, but you know what they say: the third time's a charm, right? Luz knows that Hunter is not going to be easy to take down, especially now that he could potentially take her as a serious threat, so now she's more determined than ever to put everything on the line and give it her all because she knows that if she doesn't, then there's no chance of winning against Hunter.
NEW CONTEXT: Luz was so close to defeating Hunter the last time they fought, and now she wants a chance to have a proper rematch and prove she earned second place in the tournament at least. She isn't, however, willing to use Amity to have an advantage against Hunter, as she knows Amity has her own stake in it too, and she wants to earn her victory. Making alliances is not this option, as what kind of good witch would she be then? Both Hunter and Amity matter to her, so she wants both of them to be treated fairly, and she wants to defeat them both by her own effort.
Luz Noceda, the protagonist of our story, is one and only. Unlike other competitors, Luz is a rare example of a jack of all trades who does not specialize in one specific magical track and studies all of them. Normally, Luz specializes in glyphs, but according to the lore of my own tournament, which happens after the final battle with Belos, Luz no longer has access to glyphs. However, she now does have a magical staff that allows her to still be able to cast spells just fine, as proven by Owlbert in Young Blood, Old Souls. Now, since my rules specify how at times you're not allowed to use palismen in the battle, Luz is capable of avoiding this rule thanks to String Bean's shape-shifting nature, as String Bean possibly could transform into an accessory that would allow Luz to cast a spell like everyone is none the wiser, or maybe even shape-shift into an instrument to mimic bard magic (even though Luz has no vibration based spells). Outside of that, Luz would also have access to some other supporting artifacts.
When it comes to Luz's fighting style, she in general prefers to outsmart and outpower her opponents with the raw strength of her magic. Luz has come far ever since she started to learn magic. Currently with String Bean by her side, she certainly is now more accustomed to spell-casting. Luz is quite proficient with magic now, coming up with new creative ways to utilise her magic. She also now has more experience in combat, meaning she's more willing to take down her opponents head-on. Luz can, however, be pretty reckless and impulsive when approaching her opponents, biting more than she can chew and sometimes jumping without thinking. Luz can, however, be quick on her feet and easily recover and come up with new ways to get an upper hand during battles.
Luz now possesses her own palisman as we all know it, which happens to be none other than String Bean. String Bean showed that with her presence, Luz could be even stronger than she used to be, and Luz had plenty of experience with Owlbert beforehand to know how to use a witch's staff. Luz is a true aerial ace as Eda's Requiem episode proves, as she could've won the race if it wasn't for King. She, of course, also knows how to correctly cast spells with staff alone and can use it in combat. String Bean also has a unique ability of shape-shifting, which allows her to take on features of other creatures and use them to her advantage. Granted, she can't change size with the ability so all animals will be miniature, but it can come in handy nonetheless, and she could possibly change String Bean into other objects (like jewelry or instruments) in case she can't use witch's staff.
Luz shall be allowed a multitude of tools to help her out during battles. One of them happens to be a crystal ball from her oracle class. Luz can use it to conjure up a single ghost that can be used to help Luz aid in the battle and also predict Luz's future. The ghost is usually chill but rather helpful. It's intangible, meaning it's immune to physical attacks for the most part (but can be dispelled with special attacks) and can phase through solid objects to get to its opponents and be capable of touching them to inflict harm.
Another tool Luz would be allowed to use is tea leaves from oracle class, which would also help her learn about her opponents, what they're capable of, and what they're going to do.
Luz is also equipped with a training wand in case she needs another source of magic to cast spells from. It's like a hidden dagger if someone were to take her sword (as in her staff, I'm clearly alluding to Sasha Waybright's example) away.
Another tool Luz is free to use is her iconic bat, which Luz can use for offensive purposes. Luz is allowed to have and use other weapons like a mace and a sword to aid her in times of need.
And of course, how could I not forget that Luz also has fireworks to help her in a fight to add more to her firepower.
While Luz doesn't have beast-keeping magic at all, she does seem to have an affinity to be able to tame most of the wild beasts as presented throughout the entire show with her knowledge and attitude. This means Luz is not really affected much by beast-keepers sending animals in her direction unless they're directly under the command of their masters (as in like pets. Sometimes, some beasts are untamed and would not follow even the beast-keeper.
Luz also has brought snakes to her battle as she managed to tame them just enough so they would not attack her, but certainly would attack her opponents. They're not venomous, though, considering now pressed no charges were pressed when Luz brought them to school. She will bring a few of them.
Another animal that Luz would bring with her to the battlefield is spiders. They're mostly used to just scare people during the fight by pouring them all over her opponents. Can be used as a great distraction. She has quite a big number of them, and she can even naturally attract them as seen in TtT. The spiders are also not harmful, and Luz is not phased by them either.
Smoke Potion - Another tool Luz would be granted to use is a smoke potion she could brew, as seen in the First Day. Luz could potentially utilize it as a smokescreen or suffocation attempt.
It's worth mentioning that Luz will not be affected by Sleeping Smoke effects as he knows how such a spell works and would not be fooled by it.
Ok, the battle has been concluded, and as per the rules, due to Amity and Hunter tying, with Amity ultimately winning the match-up between these two, and Luz coming short in this one, the winner is
AMITY BLIGHT!
Due to this, for the time being, she will be placed second in the rankings of the tournament, with Hunter following as third and Luz following as fourth.
However, if in the match-up between Hunter and Willow, Hunter does manage to earn a victory, this will prompt another duel, which will be considered the final battle between Willow, Amity, and Hunter.
If they tie, there will be another battle royale between Luz, Hunter, and Willow as a last chance for Luz to properly earn her spot, as even I have to admit, it does feel like Luz was kind of robbed here.
If Hunter loses, however, the ranking will be finished and the battle between Willow and Amity will be reblogged and re-named as the final battle, with the score being the same = meaning Willow already winning.
Nonetheless, I still expect a clean battle, no ralling up people to vote a specific way, I want people to vote genuinely in the next battle, I will try to post tomorrow.

information for both opponents under the cut to those who don't know what they can do in their battle:
Gavin Deamonne:
Gavin Deamonne specializes mainly in abomination magic, and it is not known whether or not he knows or practices spells of another kind.
Gavin and Amity have not met in canon and have no real relation to each other whatsoever. In headcanon territory, Gavin acknowledges Amity as a rival of his generation (much like his dad has a rivalry with Amity's dad) and wants to prove himself.
Gavin is overall a pretty skilled witch from Glandus High, and his debut episode proves he's not afraid to seek adventures and is capable of fighting off beasts or capturing his opponents. He's not necessarily smart enough to see through illusions, especially when emotionally vulnerable (the boy so desperately needs his dad's attention that he falls for an illusion of himself with a mustache).
Gavin does in fact possess a palisman as confirmed in Eda's Requiem, and is proven to be a skilled and fast flyer by winning the Gland Prix. Now, it's hard to tell whether or not he and Luz were going head to head (granted, she had a huge head start before King puked at her, making Luz crash); however, he still managed to win the race by his own skill, even if Luz could potentially outpace him. It goes without saying that Gavin still has skills in being an aerial ace that can rival most of the competitors here. It's not, however, known whether or not he can use staff in combat.
Gavin may or may not have galdorstones with him to enhance his magic.
Abomination Slip - Gavin can create abominations beneath the feet of his opponents, making them lose their balance. It can be especially effective if his opponents are directly charging at him.
Abomination Gripe - Gavin is capable of making abomination goo capture his opponents, no matter where they are, and restrain them or even move them across different locations.
Abomination Minion - Gavin is capable of creating quite a large abomination golem that can be used to attack Gavin's opponents for him and serve his commands. The golem was smart enough to not be captured by the vines that assisted in the capture of Gus, and also the very one to catch Gus first.
Abomination Bomb - not a canon one to Gavin, it was used by another witch, but I thought it was a nice ability, so I gave it to Gavin for him to have more firepower. Gavin can send a bullet of abomination that can explode, releasing large amounts of goo that can restrain his opponents.

Amity Blight
Amity Blight naturally specializes in Abomination Magic the most, but she does have some capacity in knowing spells of other tracks like Plants and Illusion, but it's very limited.
Hardly are there any weak spots or flaws in her battling style, but she can still be overpowered. Abomination Magic in particular, feels to be weaker than Construction Magic, for example, and it can be rendered useless when dealing in an environment with no mud. Granted, Amity holds abomination goo with her, so at most, she's going to be weakened. Amity is capable of controlling any slime or mud she comes in contact with.
Amity does wield a Palisman named Ghost, and according to herself, she's a "safe flyer". This means she's overall pretty proficient and skilled in her flying capabilities, but at the same time, it means she's not a real aerial ace like Luz or Hunter, for example. She's skilled enough not to easily fall off by herself, but as proven in her battles with Hunter (both EL and TTT), she's not fast enough to necessarily avoid being hit in midair. Granted, she can still be faster than average and have better reflexes than average, but still not enough to beat some real aerial aces. She is proficient in staff-wielding, being capable of using it to enhance her own spells.
In Canon, Amity and Gavin have not met and have no real relation to each other whatsoever. Amity is, however, Gus's friend, and while they don't interact with each other often on the screen, Amity still may not like Gus's former bully and would neither think highly of him nor spare him much. In headcanon territory: Amity is actually willing to give Gavin a second chance to improve as a person, knowing very well where he's coming from exactly, so she lets him be her sparring partner before her last battle while hoping she can reach him, but she certainly isn't going to go easy on him.
Projection Spell - Amity is capable of creating projections of images or historical events, similar to how Eda did it in the first episode, as proven in Enchanting Grom Fright when explaining Grom to Luz. The spell, however, has very little use on the battlefield and at most can be used as a brief distraction.
Voice Change - Amity is capable of briefly changing her voice to sound like whoever she wants to sound like. Her real voice, however, can still be heard through, but it could be used as a brief distraction during Battle Royale or maybe to mess up some verbal spells of other casters (like beast-keepers, though it's hard to tell if it would actually work, or Alador's Abomatons, as proven in Reaching Out). I could also picture Amity using this spell specifically to mess with Bria's head for a hot second.
Oath Spell - Amity can make oaths between her opponents as demonstrated in Covention. It all, however, depends on Amity's manipulation and bargaining skills on what she could force her opponent to oath to.
Thorn Bolt - Amity's only known successful plant spell, but a very potent one. Amity by striking a magic circle to the ground can create a giant pillar made out of thorns that can be used to knock out people all around her while getting away or be used as an offensive strike at a specific target. It is proven to be quite destructive. She demonstrated it in the flashback during WILW.
Shield Spell - Amity is shown to create a tiny shield out of energy to block attacks, as demonstrated in her training with the twins at the knee. She did this with the wand at the time, but I believe that now that Amity has grown stronger, she can do it fine by herself as of now. The shield isn't particularly big, but it can be very effective against very direct and simple attacks
Barrier Spell - Amity is capable of creating a cage made out of energy around her opponents. The cage is very resistant to physical damage and can also deal damage upon being touched, effectively immobilising its opponents. It can also last pretty long. However, the barrier has a flaw in its top being left wide open, so if the caster can use their capabilities to jump above it, the barrier becomes effectively useless.
Fireball - Amity is shown to be able to create and shoot fireballs of various sizes (from very small to medium to even large ones) at her opponents. Her fire magic can naturally melt away ice and mud/goo (as proven to be effective against SlitherBeast's goo); however, her spell could still be blocked. It is Amity's second trademark spell aside from her proficiency in Abomination Magic. She can also use this spell to just raise the temperature or create combustion to destroy objects, as demonstrated in Adventure in the Elements when Amity destroyed her drawing.
Abomination Golem - Amity naturally can create golems out of abomination goo. She'll usually limit herself to one at a time when using her own golem. Her golems can come in various sizes, from very little to medium-sized to even giant-sized. Her golems also showed to be quite obedient and intelligent for a typical abomination, being able to mimic Amity's movements and being capable of throwing projectiles, throwing themselves at the opponent, blocking attacks, tying their opponents or their attacks, and knocking them out with brute strength. They are, however, fragile as they can be easily destroyed with just enough force, but Amity can easily fix them up again. Her abominations can also be pretty quick and, due to their ability to mimic Amity, can showcase a mannerism closer to actual combatants rather than a slow, zombie-like mannerism. Amity also never lost control over her abominations.
Take Over Abomination - Amity proved to be capable of taking over abominations that weren't made by her, as demonstrated when she took control over abominations at Hexside during her debut and even managed to bring down to the knees a very improved Abomaton made by her dad. She can also use this ability to destroy abominations of other people with it, though it could be harder against more skilled abomination casters if they're also putting just enough effort into controlling their own abominations.
Abomination Bullet - as demonstrated with her own abomination minions, Amity can throw abomination goo as projectiles that can be pretty destructive, as demonstrated during Covention.
Abomination Block - Amity can use abomination goo to directly block attacks from her opponents, as demonstrated in her battle with Hunter during Eclipse Lake. She can also use it to trap attacks inside a ball made out of abomination, as demonstrated in EL. In KT, it's also demonstrated that she can shape her abomination block into an abomination hand, which is also larger and helps protect from bigger attacks, such as falling debris, for example.
Abomination Shield - Amity can create a fortified shield made out of Abomination Goo that is supposedly stronger than a typical Abomination Block, as demonstrated in Reaching Out.
Abomination Slide- as demonstrated in Reaching Out, Amity is capable of using abomination goo to ride on it for transportation. It could be used to get away from her opponents, get into a specific location for Amity to proceed with her strategy, or just charge head-on towards her opponents, as shown in WaD.
Abomination Root Attack - as demonstrated in Reaching Out, Amity can slide her abomination goo through the ground unnoticed, for it to pop up wherever she wants to create a hand that can be either used to block people's movements, or sneak attacks to throw them away, it can also take the shape of a hand.
Abomination Arms - as demonstrated in both King's Tide and Reaching Out, Amity can create arms using her abomination goo. It could be used to either block the attacks, even as strong as falling debris, hold their opponent still as Amity attempted with Belos, or she can cover her own arms with goo to form bigger arms to match the strength of stronger opponents while also being capable of extending them however she likes.
Giant Abomination Arm - Amity, as demonstrated in WILW, was capable of creating a giant arm made out of an abomination that could be used to block attacks as strong as a giant axe, for example. It can also be used for an uppercut, as demonstrated in both WILW and ASIAS when Amity killed Tibbles.
Abomination Lasso - as demonstrated during her battle with Belos, Amity is capable of creating a lasso made out of abomination goo that can be used to tie her opponents down.
Abomination Bind - as demonstrated in EL, Amity can bind her opponents with abomination goo as she did with Hunter during the entire episode. The bind is quick enough to catch her opponents, no matter what, and it would require top speed to break from them.
Abomination Bubble - Amity can create a restraining bubble around her opponents to trap them, as demonstrated in Eclipse Lake, being quick enough to trap them no matter what. However, it is not invulnerable, as Hunter broke out of it with enough force. The bubble can also be used to also use for her protection and transportation.
Abomination Blade - as demonstrated during her battle with Hunter, Amity is capable of creating a simple blade made out of abomination goo.
Abomination Gauntlet - Amity is capable of creating a fortified gauntlet made out of abomination goo. She can create only one at a time, though (not counting Abomination Arms, which aren't as fortified as the gauntlet, which has spikes). However, she can use it to enhance her own physical strength (though barely, as she didn't break Hunter's nose with it and only came "close" to breaking a barrier according to Alador). She can use her abomination gauntlet to shoot projectiles at her opponents, as demonstrated during her tag-team battle with Luz against Kikimora.
Abomination Wave - Amity is capable of creating a giant wave of abomination goo. The wave could be used to knock back her opponents, glue them to the floor as demonstrated in Clouds on the Horizon, or to the walls as demonstrated in Labirynth Runners.
Abomination Construct - Amity has demonstrated to be capable of creating precise tools and objects with her abomination goo, as seen in Follies when she created a skateboard or balloon in Reaching Out. Amity showcased that it was quite creative with it.
Abomination Multiple Hands - as demonstrated in WaD when attacking Luz, Amity is capable of creating multiple abomination giant hands to use to attack her opponents.
Abomination Tendrils - Amity is capable of creating multiple tendrils made out of abomination that can be used to hold up structures (like Luz's ice bridge in TtT) and attack her opponents during her battle with Luz in WaD.
Abomination Hand Block - An improved version of the Abomination Block, where Amity's shield takes the form of an arm and is much bigger than the typical Abomination Block.
Abomination Arm Attack - Demonstrated in KT, Amity can create a singular abomination arm that can extend and attack her opponents. Unlike the giant arm, this one is smaller but longer.
Abomination Arm Stream - demonstrated in LR, Amity can create a stream of abomination goo, forming hands and tendrils to attack her opponents head-on.
Abomination Hand Wave - Demonstrated in LR, Amity can create two hands that can be used to assault her opponents in a wave manner.
REQUEST BATTLES OF WITCHES DUELS - Battle 67: Angmar vs Hunter
Disclaimer: This is not a popularity contest or which character you prefer; in this tournament, you decide who is stronger/better/smarter/etc. opponent.
Who wins this battle (who is stronger, not more beloved)
Angmar
Hunter
Voting ended onJul 25, 2025
Information for both opponents under the cut for those who don't know what they can do in their battle:
Angmar:
Angmar specializes in plant magic, mostly, but could potentially utilise beast-keeping magic, considering he can also attract butterflies.
The only reason Angmar is still competing is because he wants to prove he's not the biggest loser in this tournament. Because he thinks that Hunter essentially exposed himself as a fraud by losing to Amity and his position in the ranking being threatened, he thinks he has a chance.
Angmar is not confirmed to possess a palisman, so anyone fighting him will also not possess it to even the score.
Angmar may or may not have galdorstones with him to enhance his magic.
Angmar appears quite adventurous and skilled and is capable of fighting off beasts and restraining his opponents, which is also his go-to tactic. He's not, however, smart enough to see through illusions and can be easily distracted by butterflies.
Butterfly Army - an improvised move I created, thus non-canonical. Angmar can summon multiple butterflies and send them toward his opponents, disorienting and distracting them.
Thorn Net-Shield - Angmar is capable of creating a net-like shield out of thorns that can be used for protection and to deflect any raging attack or opponent in the opposite direction. Makes for a good defense as it was able to send a Slitherbeast flying.
Thorn Restrain - Angmar is capable of creating giant and thick thorns and vines around his opponents to restrain them and prevent them from any movement or usage of magic. Unless the opponent doesn't need to draw circles to cast spells, the move is a finishing one; it requires Angmar to be able to freely cast it, meaning that if he's distracted, he won't be able to pull it.
Thorn Attack - Angmar could potentially use his strong vines for offensive purposes as well, granted, this is fanon/assumed and not confirmed in canon.

Hunter The Golden Guard:
I will only mention moves by name rather than delve into specifics, as they're too large for that. In the name (with a few exceptions for the sake of clarification for some), there's a link to more of Hunter's capabilities.
Hunter recognizes Angmar as one of the kids who bullied Gus, so he has no high opinion of him whatsoever. It also doesn't help with how poor Angmar's track record is in battles. He ultimately accepted the challenge for a sparring opportunity before he faced both Luz and Amity at once.
Hunter, without a doubt, has the most experience among all participants when it comes to battling, because you know Belos never gave him a break or easy time, and for Hunter to be where he is today is all thanks to his own strength, intelligence, and resilience.
Hunter certainly has one of the strongest wills among all characters in TOH, as despite going through a ridiculous amount of pain, he is capable of brushing it off and pushing forward, with his only weakness being Belos. Hunter's willpower was even able to withstand Gus's trauma bubble, which specifically puts you through your worst memories and even renders you useless, but Hunter resisted its effect and calmed Gus down instead, despite his pain being very fresh and severe, and Hunter in fact not being ok with it, but Hunter keeps on going anyway. One must know it's very hard to break him, trust Belos, he tried but didn't succeed. Hunter even managed to resist Belos's possession for some time, which is a lot considering Belos was his abuser and had power over him metaphorically and physically in that moment.
Hunter displayed throughout the series to have some great athletic skills and agility, being able to keep up pace with running Luz without breaking a sweat, while proving he has experience in parkour and acrobatics, as seen in him flying on the staff. Certainly, he can use his skills to evade incoming attacks with his reflexes while keeping up with his opponents and closing the distance between him and his enemies.
Back in EC Hunter learned how to be smart, resourceful, and strong, and as I've mentioned before multiple times, he's a child soldier.
Hunter now is sub-merged with Flapjack meaning he does not require staff anymore to cast spells as magic now comes from within.
During this fight, Palismen are not allowed.
Flash Step
Comet Charge
Resistance Spell
Block Spell
Underground Escape
Tool Creation
Tying Spell
Battle Armor
Laser Bolt
Lightning Strike
Barrier Spell - is not demonstrated in the show itself, but in storyboards of Yasmin Khudari, where Hunter could create a force field to shield Willow from falling debris. In the final product, he just used his own brute strength and staff to protect Willow rather than magic, but I will allow this spell, meaning Hunter can create barriers that can withstand heavy hits and create them anywhere he desires.
Flesh-Eating Plant - - this is more of a speculation rather than a confirmed fact, but I rewatched ST, and Luz and Eda weren't originally standing in the flesh-eating plant until GG showed up, so I decided to be funny and say he actually made this plant himself to taunt them, especially since he also knew what it does (which also shows his expertise in plants among many things). Hunter in battles can utilise flesh-eating plants to set traps across the battlefield to both harm and distract his opponents.
REQUEST BATTLES OF WITCHES DUELS - Battle 66: Gus vs Viney
Disclaimer: This is not a popularity contest or which character you prefer, in this tournament, you decide who is stronger/better/smarter/etc. opponent.
Who wins this battle (who is stronger, not more beloved)
Gus
Viney
Voting ended onJul 24, 2025
information for both opponents under the cut to those who don't know what they can do in their battle:
Viney:
Viney specializes in both Beast-Keeping magic and Healing Magic. She doesn't show spells of other kinds. For the purposes of this tournament, I allow Viney to have a powerset established by MoringMark's comics due to him fleshing out her capabilities in the "A Hint of Blue" comic storyline, and his comics being beloved by the fan base.
Viney is an absolutely fierce and intimidating competitor who will stop at nothing to win and can get even extra ruthless and petty when facing her friends, claiming them to be traitors. Her magic is also quite impressive, if not prodigious. The girl is absolutely skilled and at times quite chaotic. Viney's in it to win. She can be, however, a bit hasty in her approach. Viney has plenty of physical strength to back up her punch.
Viney does possess a Palisman and is quite a proficient flyer. With her fighting spirit, she is capable to rush at her opponents furiously and knock them out with her physical strength. However, at the same time, she gets tunnel vision due to this, and her attack can still be blocked, knocking her out in the process.
Viney and Gus in canon are friends and teammates but don't have much screentime together, or a specific established dynamic. However, Viney does not intend to let go of her high place in the ranking, so Gus will have to take it from her cold grasp.
Quick Heal—Viney is capable of very quickly healing wounds of hers or others (this ability is only available during Battle Royale when it comes to other people; there's no way she's healing her opponents unless it's after the battle, but that's debatable due to her personality). According to Viney, the only scars she has are emotional, making her quite a proficient healer who can leave the battle without a single scratch on her.
Healing Shield - Viney is capable of creating a shield-shaped hand to block any attacks coming her way. From simple bullets to even raging streams.
Medical Knowledge - Viney has enough experience to come up with remedies on the fly while also understanding both the strong and weak spots of the body of any witch/demon, meaning Viney knows where it hurts the most, and you bet she will use that knowledge to her advantage.
Griffin Companion - Viney can summon Puddles to aid her in battles. Puddles can at times be wilder even than Viney herself, but Viney is still his master, and he listens to her commands. Puddles is both strong and smart, a large griffin that can give Viney's opponent just as much of a hard time and is even more fierce than Viney, dealing huge damage. Also, much like other griffins, he probably possesses spider breath, which Viney can use to attack her opponents with an army of crawling spiders. Viney can ride him naturally.
Muscle Growth - power-up which came from MoringMark's comic. Viney can enhance her muscles to enhance her own strength to a superhuman level when attacking her opponents. (I will not post screenshots of Mark's comics, but I will leave parts of the comics where he demonstrated this ability so you can support HIS art.)
Deaf Spell - a power-up which came from MoringMark's comic. Viney can manipulate her ears to tie them together, making her resistant to sound-based attacks (especially effective against bard magic and somewhat against illusion magic if it includes sound as part of the illusion).
Equipment attack - power-up which came from MoringMark's comic. Viney can throw medical equipment at her opponents using this or get her hands on a weapon of said equipment to use thanks to her medical knowledge.
The comics of Moringmark in question

Gus Porter:
Gus Porter is a prodigy when it comes to illusion magic. Prodigious enough to skip a few grades and even defeat the covenhead of illusions with his sheer raw power. Gus displays insane potential and a big imagination when it comes to his magic. Now, his powers are still limited by his own imagination and creativity, meaning his illusions, for the most part, can be used mostly for deception and distraction, but during this tournament, Gus finally revised his own skill to find even offensive capabilities of his powers. While Gus did display the willingness to study other tracks, he ultimately never did due to his reassurance in being a master illusionist, how easy it comes to him, and how much he can do with illusions alone.
One must know how intelligent Gus is during his battles. He can easily fool and toy with his opponents thanks to his illusions, and Gus is also not afraid to either mock or straight-up torture his enemies during his battle just to get the results he needs, and he has more than enough raw power to pull his schemes to their fullest. It's worth noting that when Gus feels extreme emotions, his magic only gets amplified; however, the side effects could be that Gus actually loses control over his own powers and gets to be the victim of them too, though thankfully, due to the magical amplifier from Graye, the risk of that is less.
Gus does possess a Palisman and is known to be an utter speed demon. Gus doesn't fly in a traditional sense like most other competitors due to preferring to surf in the air, but this only further allows him to still cast spells while midair, which, mixed with his capacity to trick his opponents more dangerous. It's hard to tell, however, how good he is in combat with his staff, but it appears he knows how to battle with it if he still used it as a means to fight in LR when briefly facing Hunter.
Gus and Viney are good friends and teammates. They don't have much interaction in canon, but they seem to be on good terms, granted Gus wants to join his friends as close to the podium as possible, and he knows he has to get through Viney to achieve this.
One of the artifacts I allow Gus to have independently, regarding whether or not his opponent also has any supportive gear, is the looking glass earring he got after he defeated Adrian. The magical amplifier allows Gus to further concentrate his raw power into specific abilities he has a hard time pulling on his own, and even enhances them in the process, growing more powerful.
Light Spell - as proven in UW, Gus is capable of utilising light spells. Gus can use it to either illuminate the terrain or blind his opponents with it. He can produce multiple blinding orbs at once with his power and will usually use them in tandem with absolute darkness to make the light orbs all the more effective. He can also create quite large orbs of light.
Telekinesis - Gus displayed the capacity to move multiple objects with his mind. Usually, the objects are rather small, and it appears Gus can't use telekinesis on a person, but he can utilise this ability offensively to throw projectiles at his opponent or to potentially deflect incoming attacks if they're little projectiles, too.
Glamour - Unlike other examples of battle-royal glamour, Gus can use his glamour in 1v1 scenarios thanks to his ability to create clones and entities of any kind. This means Gus can easily disguise himself among the crowd, as he can create a crowd himself. Gus is capable of taking the form of anyone he desires or merely amplifying the form he already has (like putting on additional clothes or features like devil's legs).
Mini Clones - Gus is capable of creating mini clones of himself (usually up to 3) that can be used to nag his opponents, as seen in TTLGR.
Illusion Clones - Gus is capable of creating huge numbers of clones. The clones can take the shape of himself or even other people. The clones usually don't display the capacity of the people they were cloned from, but can develop a personality of their own. They still remain obedient to Gus and can be used as a great distraction. This ability also allows Gus to use his Glamour ability. The close will disappear upon impact.
Strength Enhancement - Gus is capable of enhancing the strength of his illusions, himself, or even others and the magic of others, as proven in the First Day when Gus created buff arms for Willow's plant monster. The enhancement is still illusionary in nature.
Camouflage - as proven throughout the series, Gus can disguise himself and remove himself from the sight of his opponents. He can also do it to large chunks of areas or other people. As seen in KT, he can also make his disappearance cover in flying birds. He could also potentially create bushes to camouflage himself, as shown in Hooty's Moving Hassle.
Illusion Teleport - Whether it's camouflage hiding his movement or true teleportation, Gus can reappear wherever he pleases with a puff of smoke. The range of it doesn't seem big, though. It was demonstrated during Covention.
Light Construct - Gus is capable of creating constructs of poor light. Usually, unlike the illusions, they don't necessarily look like real objects but energy taken the shape of objects but can be used as effectively by creating tools Gus needs during the battle.
Illusion Construct - a stronger version of Light Construct. Gus is capable of creating constructs that seem like real objects. Gus showcased it throughout the series.
Illusion Beast - a stronger version of his illusion clones, where Gus is capable of creating living beings that are illusions. Said beings can take any form, be it mirror and gender-inverted versions of their opponents, or completely unrelated beings. Usually, however, the said beings don't necessarily have true power of their own and are nothing but a mirage, though Gus potentially could create the illusion of damage they cause thanks to his strength-enhancing ability.
Absolute Darkness - Gus is capable of covering the entire battlefield in absolute darkness that can camouflage him and disorient his opponents. The darkness can be dispelled with enough force, though it's usually more durable than most of Gus's illusions. Gus can utilise this ability to hide his true intentions and sneak attacks.
Illusion Terrain - Gus is capable of changing the terrain with his illusion magic; however, he pleases, taking the shape of anything from Gus's memory. Be it his room, the carnival, the graveyard, whatever. The said technique can be used to confuse and disorient his opponents. Gus is also capable of making the terrain switch from one imaginary world to another. Sometimes, the terrain can actually perfectly match the terrain that is beneath the illusion. It is also very difficult to cancel.
Illusion-Shifting Terrain - an amplified version of the previous attack; in this case, the terrain is constantly shifting and moving, completely covering the battlefield, which can disorient and confuse the opponent. Also, so many details at once, constantly changing could give people some serious headaches with sensory overload.
Magic Cancel - not a real magic cancel, but with the help of Illusion Terrain, Gus is capable of making people believe their magic circles have no effect.
Sensory Confusion - as proven in TTLGR, Gus managed to somewhat successfully convince Bria that her hands were missing.
Traumatic Re-memory - Gus is capable of using his magic to get inside the heads of his opponents to make them re-live their worst memories. Gus can use this ability to learn the weaknesses of his opponents or render them completely useless as they are stuck in their own heads. The only person that is known to be able to resist this ability is Hunter, as in some cases, it could stick for a long time, depending on how strong-willed Gus's opponents are. This is Gus's most painful attack.
Trauma Bubble - a technique of traumatic re-memory. Rather than focusing his magic to invade the mind of someone, Gus creates a bubble of pure magical energy that anyone who touches it would begin to re-live their worst memories. The side effect of this shield is that Gus could also potentially be stuck inside the bubble for some time before managing to dispel it.
Mind Illusion - a variation of traumatic re-memory that isn't necessarily harmful, but is the ultimate culmination of Gus's illusionary prowess by making his opponents stuck in the maze of illusion that is solely inside their heads. Demonstrated by Hunter, who was completely disoriented by Gus's illusion, not being capable of seeing where Gus truly is, and wandering from place to place that did not even exist. The illusions could be Gus's memories, his opponents' memories, or just illusionary images.

Information for all opponents under the cut to those who don't know what they can do in their battle:
Because of how lengthy both of their profiles are, I won't be getting into deeper details on what they can do and will just put links in their names:
Hunter The Golden Guard:
Hunter "Insert your preferred surname/s for him", also known as a former and the youngest Golden Guard in history, head of the Emperor's Coven, Emperor Belos's right-hand man. One must know that, unlike other contestants (aside from Luz), he's not constricted to specific covens and tracks. As a former leader of the coven that allows all kinds of magic, Hunter will have expertise in all types of coven magic as well, and he's also very dedicated to studying wild magic.
While he was born magicless, it did not stop him from earning his title as the right-hand man of the most powerful witch of the Boiling Isles. Hunter spends days and nights both training and learning everything about magic both as a duty and as fun. He's incredibly knowledgeable regarding all kinds of magic, meaning it's hard to actually surprise him with anything. And since he's a child soldier raised in a magical military with no magic by himself, Hunter had to survive hell even worse than some of the adults that also were part of this coven went through, and he survived it all. Hunter without a doubt has the most experience among all participants when it comes to battling because you know Belos never gave him a break or easy time, and for Hunter to be where he is today is all thanks to his own strength, intelligence, and resilience.
Hunter certainly has one of the strongest wills among all characters in TOH, as despite going through a ridiculous amount of pain, he is capable of brushing it off and pushing forward, with his only weakness being Belos. Hunter's willpower was even able to withstand Gus's trauma bubble, which specifically puts you through your worst memories and even renders you useless, but Hunter resisted its effect and calmed Gus down instead, despite his pain being very fresh and sever,e and Hunter in fact not being ok with it, but Hunter keeps on going anyway. One must know it's very hard to break him. Trust Belos, he tried but didn't succeed. Hunter even managed to resist Belos's possession for some time, which is a lot considering Belos was his abuser and had power over him metaphorically and physically in that moment.
Hunter displayed throughout the series to have some great athletic skills and agility, being able to keep up pace with running Luz without breaking a sweat while proving he has experience in parkour and acrobatics as seen in him flying on staff. Certainly, he can use his skills to evade incoming attacks with his reflexes while keeping up with his opponents and close distance between him and his enemies. He also has plenty of brute strength at his disposal as well, considering he managed to shatter falling debris by just swinging his staff in one hand.
Hand-To-Hand Combat - Hunter has proven to be efficient in hand-to-hand combat throughout the series. While Hunter overall plays more on defense as a protector rather than offense, he is not afraid to throw a punch. This post goes more in-depth about Hunter's proficiency in staff-wielding, but I will explain some of it here too.
It's worth mentioning that Hunter will not be affected by Sleeping Smoke effects as he knows how such a spell works and would not be fooled by it.
Back in EC Hunter learned how to be smart, resourceful, and strong, and as I've mentioned before multiple times, he's a child soldier.
Hunter now is sub-merged with Flapjack meaning he does not require staff anymore to cast spells as magic now comes from within.
And now finally, let's talk about his staff. For the purposes of this tournament, I will give Hunter Waffles. You know Hunter is the best staff wielder in the entire tournament only rivaled by Luz. I already mentioned how Hunter is absolutely proficient with his staff, utilizing it for both offensive and very effective strikes and flawless defense. Hunter is also a real aerial ace capable of flying at high speeds with agility to dodge attacks and is capable of even surfing on his staff as demonstrated when he showed off in ASIAS. His flying skills were also decisive in both forming EE and winning their very first game together.
REQUEST BATTLES OF WITCHES DUELS - Battle 68: Gavin Deamonne vs Amity Blight
Disclaimer: This is not a popularity contest or which character you prefer; in this tournament, you decide who is stronger/better/smarter/etc. opponent.
Who wins this battle (who is stronger, not more beloved)
Gavin
Amity
Voting ended onJul 26, 2025
information for both opponents under the cut to those who don't know what they can do in their battle:
