Drawing folded over paper walking is unnatural and strange!
After that last attempt at shot 100, and a long discussion with my team, scrapped the whole thing and started over. Right now, Tanner and I really like where this shots going! Its an emotionally heavy moment in the story, so we want to make sure we give it the appropriate expression.
My first drawover of how Paperson reacts to Phoebe quitting drawing...
Another drawover! After discussing changes we wanted to make to the shot, I started working on this. I got to this “version” of the shot after a lot of character discovery that had to be done. What does Paperson feel when noticing Phoebe is unhappy with her drawings? How would I feel if whatever omniscient creator that made me thought I sucked? To put it lightly, its been a tough emotion to nail.
Still subject to many changes, but passed this along to Tanner to see what he can do with the paper model!

Some early character acting drawovers I did to better understand what’s going on in this shot! After doing this, we restructured the entirety of this sequence!
Some sketchbook drawings as I continue to get comfortable with the character design and style.
The Paperson team pushed for a light redesign of her hair so that she is not only easier to animate (all that pesky hair gets tough to track) but also identifies more with the artist who draws her in the film.

A quick off-model “test” I put together before the quarter began to discuss stylistic choices with the art directors. Having some visuals to feel our way around would help us get the work done quicker and better.
