Okay, one quote, and then you absolutely have to read the whole thing.
Still, the virtue of some rules in Aschwanden’s test is difficult to see at first. Take the rule of “no firsts.” In the comments section below her post for Last Word on Nothing, Finkbeiner explained that no sooner had she taken the vow to ignore gender, than she caught herself writing that the astronomer she was profiling was the first to win a certain award. After a reader urged her to stick to her pledge, she removed it.
“The fact that she’s the first woman to do that says a lot more about the prize-giving committee than it does about her,” Finkbeiner explained in our interview. “So if I were going to put that into a story, it would be a story about prejudice in that prize committee.”
It blew my mind, because she’s right. The fact that there’s some many firsts left is the result of bias in the committees NOT IN THE WORK WOMEN DO

Last year when our cherry tomato plants were at their most productive my dog had this habit where he'd come up and sit next to me while I was picking tomatoes and he would make this cute quiet little bark sounds at me until I gave him a tomato and I thought he was so good and cute and sweet for asking for a tomato instead of just taking them off the vines, which were well within reach.
But I remembered literally just now that dogs are red green fucking color blind so he wasn't waiting because he was just sweet good boy who only wanted to eat the tomatoes that were given to him! It was because there were still plenty of green tomatoes on the vine and he couldn't tell the difference between the ripe ones and the gross ones!! At some point he figured out that the cherry tomatoes I gave him were always delicious and ripe and even though he had no way of knowing how I could tell which ones were good I simply could so he would sit there and ask me to give him a good ones.
