Lesson from Night Vale

These last two episodes were my favorite. We learned so much from Cecil, his crew, and Night Vale civilians. Thanks so Cecil and the community, StrexCorp retrieved from the town. What I found fascinating is- the commitment to find the answers, to figure out what was going around them and overall, to save their town. 

These were such a hilarious podcast to end our class with. Cecil’s Revolution was possible, Dana became Mayor, Cecil kept the radio show. Above all, when they told Cecil that his revolution was meaningless, it reminded me of the Vogons when they told Author and Ford- Resistance is useless- and both still survived and won. Everything that was done by Cecil to help Night Vale town was to make people come alive and fight for who they were regardless of those in power because we together have the power!

Without Cecil, Night Vale isn’t Night Vale and thats important if StrexCorp announced the news, many of the citizens would be unhappy about it.

Lessons From Night Vale

In these two episodes, we see the difference Strexcrops made on Night Vale and the citizens aren’t happy about it. In the second part, Night Vale revolts against Strexcrops and Dana becomes mayor. 

Even though something seems futile, like the revolution, people will still take action and think about the consequences later. In this case, Cecil’s rebellion was successful.

I honestly found this excerpt a little hard to follow. I didn’t really understand the point he was trying to make, other than does anything really exist. But maybe that was the whole point, that in order to “exist” you have to know what “existing” is.

He mostly questions existence, which is normal for Existentialism, but absurd and confusing if you don’t understand Existentialism. What he is arguing is basically the whole point of Existentialism.

Satire

Roquentin questions everything’s existence starting with “I didn’t feel that it existed.” When he talks about the chestnut tree, he talks about “existence before essence.” He has also been using Rollebon as a justification for his own existence, which is strange as existentialism occurs from self knowledge of own existence. He meets his ex-girlfriend and hopes to get together again; however, it fails and he releases himself from his past self to exist in the present. However, he stated before that “denying its existence to lose itself.” In the end, it could mean “you had to exist all the way” accepting the past and living in the present, one truly “exists.”

This song can relate to Cecil as he instantly falls in love with Carlos. They later become a couple as well.

The End?

The Hitchhiker’s Guide ends with no solution as to why Zaphod hid away his reason for stealing the Heart of Gold. There are many other questions that stay unanswered as well. I feel that this ending gives the readers many possibilities on what happens next, for example: they could all return to being unhappy while owning watches in Earth 2. It connects back to our 4 themes.

HHG Response

I really enjoyed reading this book, because it always made me laugh. My favorite part about these last few chapters, was the mice trying to cut out Arthur’s brain. I didn’t fully understand why they wanted to do that though.

After all those years spent on Earth looking for an answer to their question, what did they believe they would find by searching through his brain now?

The mice believed that the answer to the question they asked Deep Thought would be stored in Arthur’s brain since he was alive on Earth before it was destroyed by the Vogons

HHG ch 31-35

Arthur is brought to a room with Trillian, Zaphod, and Ford and he meets the white mice. The mice want to buy Arthur’s brain and replace it with an electronic one, so the two mice can become wealthy. They hide behind a computer, because the police arrived and started firing at them; however, the computer starts to melt. The police stop firing, since someone pulled their life support, so Arthur and the gang go to the surface to see what happened. It turns out that Marvin’s depression killed the spaceship. It ends with Arthur reading about the three stages for civilization and ends as a cliffhanger.

Compare/Contrast

Night Vale and Hitchhiker’s Guide both use unique ways of transitions. Night Vale will use music to inform the listener of a change in mood as well as using the weather as a way to transition between topics. For Hitchhiker’s Guide, the style of writing can change to inform the reader and the fantasy Hitchhiker’s Guide is used to tell information as a transition.

Summer Reading Program

When I read “The Joy Luck Club,” it perfectly captured the struggles of Asian-American daughters and their Asian Mothers. Even my mother can relate to the book as it was during the time she immigranted to the USA. I just found it meaningful since like Marley, it is hard to find books about Asian-Americans.

HHG ch 26-30

Slartibartfast tells Arthur that they still need to obtain all the dinosaur bones for the new Earth. He even states that all the cleaning staff died, and thats a shame since there is no one to clean the dead cleaning staff. Deep Thought answers the question of “what is the meaning of life?” with 42. Therefore, the two philosophers ask Deep Thought to make the question which takes 10 million years. Zaphod tells Trillian and Ford that he had to steal the Heart of Gold and that Zaphod shouldn’t remember the reason or else he’ll be stopped.

Big Question

What is the meaning of life?

In human’s aspect life is 42. Other people believe that the meaning of life is satisfying their every desire. They tend to lean toward a single topic and try to solve it. However, sometimes they will switch courses and try to achieve a different aspect. Some question their own existent, while others accept the fact that they are alive. The meaning of life is often different from everyone and cannot be answered in a single answer format.

This weeks podcast was interesting and different compared to the others we listened to in the past. Cecil would talk about the news like every other podcast, but in between of that, he would talk about his date with Carlos. He describes it as a perfect night. They visit an interesting restaurant with unusual features, such as, a doorless room. At the end Carlos even kisses Cecil. Do you think that there is a relationship between Carlos and Cecil? Is Carlos obsessed with Cecil? Do you believe this action continue throughout the remaining podcasts?

HHG Ch 22-25

The machines on Magrathea also shows emotions (boredom) since they attacked the spaceship. The Old man also tells Arthur more about the planet; basically, the citizens are all sleeping. Humans believed they were the smartest on Earth; however, dolphins knew that the Earth was going to be destroyed, so they left trying to warn the humans. Yet, another species were smarter which were mice. It turned out, the Earth had a computer which spent years to answer the question to “what is the meaning of life?”

Theme Post

Although not about Existentialism, this is still an important theme for understanding novels, and media.

Lyu begins the introduction with using a hook in describing Herrold’s view on infants. Then she explains from other people’s perspectives. She states her thesis and in the next sentence tells her two divisions of proof (DoP) with two specific people's theories. She goes into her examples, going into great details and explaining in a distant manure. There seems to be little engagement with the reader; however, the general analysis of the topic is well structured.

Everyday Connections

Everyone has choices to make, right now as you are answering the Tumblr homework, you just made the choice to do your homework instead of doing something else. 

Some other choices to make would be the presidential election, who will you be voting for has an impact on the rest of the USA for the next four years. 

Every book or movie will have the main character make tough decisions which will affect the outcome of everyone else: Arthur pulling the switch similar to Amy.
