Blog Post 8: I love AR
Recently in class we had a guest lecturer by the name of Brandon Schuster. He runs a small marketing firm called: “Navigate Social.” Ostensibly, he is also an alumni of my University. In his presentation he went over the different styles of new media that people have been using with our recent advancements in technology. One form that I loved was the use of augmented reality. So augmented reality has been around for years. I was actually introduced to it with Nintendo’s 3DS handheld gaming system. That was way back in 2011 when I was only 14 years old in 8th grade. It blew my freaking mind.
Lemme back up here for a second, so augmented reality is something that doesn’t engulf you into another world like say, virtual reality. Augmented reality doesn’t take us anywhere, instead, as the name implies, it takes our reality and adds something fantastical to it. For instance take those snapchat filters that turns us into puppy dogs. That’s augmented reality. It’s taking an effect and applying to your face and making it appear like you are something other than what we know to be our “real” reality. Another great example is Pokémon Go. That was a big deal the summer it came out back in 2016, some say it brought about world piece for one whole summer. But that’s a story. Anyway, I’m a huge Nintendo fan, and Pokémon is my favorite of their franchises. So being able to catch pokémon in the real world, and for them to go even further to let me see the pokémon I was catching and then interact and take pictures with the one’s I caught was a huge game changer.
Now how can you advertise with it? Remember the snapchat filters I mention? Well, those filters are sometimes ads for movies, TV shows, video games, etc. There has been tons of neat filter that can turn you into Pennywise from IT, Bugs Bunny from the Looney Tunes, and even a Harry Potter sorting hat filter that tells what Hogwarts house you belong in. It doesn’t stop there, there’s been AR that helps you picture how a piece of furniture will fit in your house by digitally placing a model of it in the area. I believe AR gives people the ability to interact with your brand in the form of entertainment. By putting a smile on a person’s face you will increase the repour between you and your customer. Aside from that it’s just a super fun way to advertise.
Here’s some links of my favorite examples of AR on the Nintendo 3DS and Pokemon Go:
